Export stimuli revisited: The influence of the characteristics of managerial decision makers on international behaviour

Utilizing the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), this article proposes and tests relationships among the nature of export stimuli, the personal characteristics of decision makers and the decisions they make with regard to internationalization. The conceptual model for the study includes psychological variables that might condition owner-managers’ decision-making responses to such export stimuli. Using structural equation modelling, the study analyses data obtained by a survey questionnaire from 110 Spanish small- and medium-sized enterprises. The analysis reveals the importance of two particular variables, the perception of risks and opportunities in exports and the decision maker’s proactiveness, in determining the export stimuli and how these in turn affect the international behaviour of firms.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate farmers’ intentions to comply with pesticide application standards based on an extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Design/methodology/approach Built on a TPB framework, it was examined how perceived behavioural control (PBC), behavioural goal (BG), behavioural attitude (BA) and subjective norm (SN) influenced farmers’ intention to comply with pesticide application standards. Data of 986 farmers from five major agricultural provinces in China were collected following a stratified random sampling method. Structural equation modelling was employed for hypothesis testing and analysis. Findings The results showed that PBC, BG, behavioural attitude and SN had positive impacts on farmers’ intention in abiding by the standards. Among them in determining farmers’ intention towards compliance with pesticide application standards, farmers’ PBC was found to be the most influential factor, while SN was the least influential factor. Originality/value The results indicated that the traditional TPB constructs had significant correlations with farmers’ intention to comply with pesticide standards, demonstrating the applicability of the TPB in the understanding of farmers’ decision-making in a developing country context. It is suggested that psychological factors should be taken into consideration in studying farmers’ decision-making.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the relationships between situational and psychological factors and Hong Kong citizens’ plastic waste management (PWM) intentions based on an extended theory of planned behaviour model with situational factors. A total of 996 Hong Kong permanent residents were surveyed, and data were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results revealed that situational factors had a direct and positive effect on PWM intention, but also affected PWM intention indirectly through their significant effects on attitude and perceived behavioural control regarding PWM. The implications for environmental education and policy are discussed.

Menurut data dari Kepolisian Republik Indonesia, 61% kasus terjadinya kecelakaan adalah karena faktor manusia. Kementerian Perhubungan (Kemenhub) juga mencatat bahwa sedikitnya 2-3 orang meninggal dunia per harinya akibat kecelakaan lalu lintas dimana pada posisi pertama kecelakaan disebabkan oleh pengendara sepeda motor. Land Transport Safety Authority (LTSA) pada tahun 2001 juga menemukan bahwa mengebut (speeding) menjadi faktor utama dalam kematian pengendara kendaraan bermotor. Oleh karena itu, perlu dilakukannya penelitian yang dapat mengungkapkan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi perilaku mengebut sehingga mekanisme pencegahan perilaku tersebut dapat dibuat. Sebuah kuesioner dikembangkan sebagai instrumen penelitian berdasarkan Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), Drivers Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ), Classical Deterrence Theory (CDT) dan Revised Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (r-RST). Terdapat 317 responden yang mengisi kuesioner tersebut. Metode analisis yang digunakan untuk mengolah data tersebut adalah dengan menggunakan Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Hasil dari 317 pengendara di Indonesia menunjukkan bahwa Perceived Behavioural Control (PBC) merupakan variabel yang paling mempengaruhi niat seseorang untuk melakukan perilaku mengebut. Sehingga, salah satu rekomendasi pencegahan berdasarkan hasil tersebut adalah dengan memberikan hambatan agar pengendara tidak merasa termotivasi untuk melakukan perilaku mengebut.

Decision is an issue that needs to be explored in detail due to its relationship to an individual’s psychology. In the context of zakat that also acts as microfinancing (non-refundable fund), decision plays an important role in terms of collection and distribution. However, previous literature about zakat has not clarified this phenomenon especially in the context of Asnaf entrepreneurs. Asnaf entrepreneurs represent micro entrepreneurs who depend on zakat funds. Then, by benefiting the funds and getting support from the zakat institutions, Asnaf entrepreneurs become less dependent on the support and become zakat payers. Therefore, grounded by Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) framework, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of Asnaf Intention’s towards decision as the zakat payers. A total of 274 Asnaf entrepreneurs from Kelantan and Selangor had participated in this study. Data were collected through self-administered survey questionnaires. The main statistical technique used in this study is Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) by using Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS) version 23. The study has shown that subjective norms are found to be most dominant predictor towards decision closely followed by attitude, and perceived behavioural control. The above findings have added several implications towards theory, both practical and managerial. In general, the findings of the study are consistent with the theory of planned behaviour. Moreover, Asnaf entrepreneur’s intention gives the better impact towards decision and zakat collection.

Business disruption from cyberattacks is a growing concern, yet cyberinsurance uptake remains low. Using an online behavioural economics experiment with 4800 participants across four EU countries, this study tests a predictive model of cyberinsurance adoption, incorporating elements of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) as well as factors in relation to risk propensity and price. During the experiment, participants were given the opportunity to purchase different cybersecurity measures and cyberinsurance products before performing an online task. Participants likelihood of suffering a cyberattack was dependent upon their adoption of cybersecurity measures and their behaviour during the online task. The consequences of any attack were dependent upon the participants insurance decisions. Structural equation modelling was applied and the model was further developed to include elements of the wider security ecosystem. The final model shows that all TPB factors, and response efficacy from the PMT, positively predicted adoption of premium cyberinsurance. Interestingly, adoption of cybersecurity measures was associated with safer behaviour online, contrary to concerns of “moral hazard”. The findings highlight the need to consider the larger cybersecurity ecosystem when designing interventions to increase adoption of cyberinsurance and/or promote more secure online behaviour.

E-shopping is a rapidly growing phenomenon among different individuals who intend to shop online. However, a trust deficit in the E-shopping environment has always been a critical issue in the brick-and-click mode of shopping, being one of the main reasons for E-cart abandonment in E-commerce. This empirical study is aimed at investigating the perceived effect of website trust on E-shopping intentions and behaviour, drawing upon the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires from working adults who shop for garments online. Structural equation modelling was used to evaluate the model fit and assumptions. Our findings suggest that website trust and E-shopping attitude play substantial roles in building E-shopping intentions and actual behaviours. Both are the significant predictors of the behaviour mediated by E-shopping intentions. However, E-shopping intentions did not mediate between subjective norms and E-shopping behaviour, when working adults decide to purchase garments online.
