This article describes the voluntary activities of two community based O. Ts. (one with experience in adult psychiatry and the other with post-graduate training in child and family psychiatry) in the intermediate treatment of young people. Like their Social Work colleagues the work done in this area is in addition to their normal professional duties. One cannot but admire those who give more than they take. Editor.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how the Institute of Public and Social Policies could be useful for Portuguese society in terms of post-graduate training in the area of aging. Design/methodology/approach – The authors have conducted two focus groups (n=11), one with professionals of one large and three medium size social organizations, and the other with managers of three large, two medium and two small size social, health and civil rights organizations which support the elderly population. While the specific aim of the first focus group was to identify the aging training needs of professionals, who work with assistance/support to the elderly population, the aim of the second group was to identify the training interests of the retired or pre-retired elderly population. Findings – The results show on the one hand professional’s main challenges in working with elderly population in Portugal, their training needs and what exactly could be an adequate training for them in the area of aging as compared to the existing ones, and on the other hand who are the strongly committed elderly people, what are their training needs and what could exactly be for them an adequate training in the area of aging as compared to the existing ones. Research limitations/implications – The authors can conclude that both social professionals and senior population in Portugal have a need for a post-graduate training in the area of aging. Practical implications – Only by humanization at multilevel and a specific training for professionals and for families will we be able to deliver the opportunities and support that the citizens will need to enable them to age well across the life course. Social implications – Given the rapidly changing and complex demography of Portugal it is essential to give attention to training in rethinking the support of the elderly population in Portugal. Originality/value – The authors need to develop empowerment and social inclusion of the elderly population in the society.

As people live longer with chronic disease and serious illness in the U.S., palliative care teams are called upon to support patients and their families. Social workers are an integral part of the palliative care interprofessional team, and yet there are disproportionately few training programs for social workers who wish to specialize in this area. The curriculum of a post-graduate palliative care training program for social workers should be based on the current standards for palliative care and social work, as described by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Council for Social Work Education (CSWE) and the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC). Trainees should develop skills to care for patients who have chronic or life-limiting illness, patients who are nearing their end of life, patients who are in the active dying phase and their families around end of life planning, medical decision making, grief and bereavement. A post-graduate social work training program that aims to prepare social workers to work in the field of palliative care should consist of clinical rotations at multiple sites, robust didactic curriculum and clinical supervision. Interprofessional learning is necessary and training should include opportunities for scholarly work, quality improvement activities, leadership, and teaching. Post-graduate training programs in palliative care will prepare future social workers to be experts in a sub-specialty skill set to meet the needs of people living with chronic disease. These needs and opportunities call on the social work profession to take action to develop post-graduate training programs in palliative care.

The paper presents long-term experience of interaction between practitioners of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service (until 2005) and Rospotrebnadzor (since 2005), the institutions of science for Rospotrebnadzor, Ural State Medical University in preparing graduates of a medical-preventive profile, starting from pre-university work with schoolchildren to the introduction of modern technologies of practice-oriented training of students, specialists post-graduate training of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service and Rospotrebnadzor.
