The modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) in physical geography

Of particular importance to the study of large-scale phenomena in physical geography is the modifiable areal unit problem ( MAUP). While often viewed as only a problem in human geography (particularly demographic studies), the MAUP is an issue for all quantitative studies in geography of spatial phenomena (Openshaw and Taylor, 1979). Increasingly, remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems ( GIS) are being used to assess the distribution of phenomena from a large scale. These phenomena are modelled using areal units that can take any shape or size resulting in complications with statistical analysis related to both the scale and method used to create the areal units. In this paper, we define the modifiable areal unit problem, present examples of when it is a problem in physical geography studies, and review some potential solutions to the problem. Our aim is to increase awareness of this complicated issue and to promote further discussion and interest in this topic.

A difusão do Geoprocessamento, do Sensoriamento Remoto e dos Sistemas de Informação Geográfica, abriu novas possibilidades de aplicação aos estudos geográficos. Nesse contexto e considerando o método bibliográfico como procedimento de análise, o artigo objetivou: (i) refletir sobre o impacto da postura geotecnológica sobre a meta básica da ciência geográfica, qual seja, explicar a organização do espaço, mediante abordagens e técnicas exitosas; (ii) indicar algumas tecnologias de análise espacial utilizadas no Brasil, evidenciando as novas tendências no contexto da Geoinformação e (iii) discutir a aplicação das Geotecnologias, indicando estudos realizados na região Nordeste. Souda is one of the important regions in Saudi Arabia in terms of spatial and temporal changes in vegetation cover; It includes the National Park, which is a leading tourist destination and one of the most beautiful parks in it. by tracking the spatial and temporal changes of vegetation cover by integrating remote sensing and geographic information systems, through the application of the modified soil vegetation index MSAVI during the period (2014- 2018), it became clear the decrease in the quantity and density of vegetation cover in the area. Thus, the study concluded that this indicator is one of the best indicators that can be used to extract vegetation cover from satellite images.
