The main stages of solving the problem of planning movements by mobile robots in a non-stationary working environment based on neural networks, genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic are considered. The features common to the considered intellectual algorithms are singled out and their comparative analysis is carried out. Recommendations are given on the use of this or that method depending on the type of problem being solved and the requirements for the speed of the algorithm, the quality of the trajectory, the availability (volume) of sensory information, etc.

This publication, which consists of an Introduction and eight chapters by different authors, appeared at the time of the 40th anniversary of the entry of South Africa into the Angolan war. It is short but packed with useful information and well-documented with photos, geographical and combat maps, an extensive bibliography of 35 pages, political cartoons and posters, historical surveys and statistics. Edited by the South African Ian Liebenberg (Director of the Centre for Military Studies at the Military Academy in Stellenbosch), the Cuban Jorge Risquet (who participated in the 1988 Angolan peace talks), and the Russian Vladimir Shubin (former Deputy Director of the Institute for African Studies at the Russian Academy of Science), A Far-Away War sheds new light on this prolonged conflict, focusing on the involvement of South-Africa, Cuba, Russia and East-Germany.In doing so, it opens new perspectives and widens the understanding of the struggle for liberation in Southern Africa, not only for the average history and politics reader but also, as a very useful reference book, for the more advanced researcher and academic.

AbstractThis article gives a complete account of the research in synchrotron radiation powder diffractometry (SRPD) conducted at DESY/Hasylab between 1981 and 1992 and incorporates an extensive bibliography on SRPD in general. A detailed description of the experimental station for powder diffraction established in fall 1988 at beamline B2 of HASYLAB is given and selected examples of research conducted to date are reviewed to demonstrate its capabilities and potential. Aspects of instrument availability and beamtime allocation are entertained in the concluding remarks. References have been selected such that maximum coverage of the field is achieved with a minimum of citations and the list is hopefully complete with respect to the retrievable literature pertinent to the development of synchrotron powder diffractometry at Hasylab. Papers covering methodical aspects of data analysis and more general aspects of SRPD, however, have not been included.

Phytotelmata habitats have been the focus of much research and are utilized by a wide variety of taxa. In the past 15 years numerous studies in many geographic regions and covering various types of phytotelmata have greatly increased our understanding of these unique habitats. The most recent summary of phytotelmata inhabitants included over 20 families of insects. A review of the literature and extensive work in lowland Ecuador shows the family level diversity is in fact at least twice that reported earlier. A reassessment of previous phytotelmata classification schemes, as well as an extensive bibliography, is provided.
