The utilization of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites is rapidly increasing in many industrial applications and fundamental research. In this work, short banana-jute fiber-reinforced epoxy-based hybrid composite was prepared by varying the fiber loading (0–40 wt.%) and different weight ratios of banana and jute fiber (1:1, 1:3, and 3:1). The physical and thermal properties such as density, water absorption, thermal conductivity, specific heat and thermal diffusivity were evaluated as per ASTM standards. A new micromechanical model was developed for evaluating the effective thermal conductivity of short fiber-reinforced hybrid composites by using the law of minimal thermal resistance and equal law of specific equivalent thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity was calculated numerically by using the steady state heat transfer simulations. The proposed model and numerical results were validated with the experimental results and analytical methods existing in the literature. The effective thermal conductivity was predicted with the proposed model, and the finite element method is in good agreement with the experimental values and observed an acceptable range of 0–6.5% and 0–11% error, respectively. The results reveal that the composite made with banana and jute in the weight ratio of 1:3 shows minimum void content, water absorption, thermal conductivity, and thermal diffusivity at all fiber loadings. The fabricated hybrid composites were suitable for building components and automobiles in order to reduce the energy consumption.

The present paper discovers the effect of ceramic filler inclusion on physico-mechanical and water absorption behaviour of untreated and chemically treated (alkali and benzoyl chloride treated) bi-directional jute natural-fiber-reinforced epoxy composites. In practice, the major drawbacks of using natural fibers are their high degree of moisture absorption and poor dimensional stability. Currently, chemical treatments are able to induce fiber modifications that increase their resistance when utilized in composite products. Jute fibers were subjected to various chemical modifications to improve the interfacial bonding with the matrix. In this study, an analysis has been carried out to make pre-treated jute fiber (10, 20, 30 and 40 wt.%) and different filler content (5 and 10 wt.%) with epoxy-based composites. A comparative study of all the untreated jute/aluminium oxide based hybrid composites with chemically treated jute/aluminium oxide based hybrid composites was carried out. The investigational result reveals that chemically treated composites considerably improved the mechanical properties of the composite. The maximum water absorption resistance and strength properties were found with benzoyl chloride-treated fiber-reinforced composite. Lastly, the surface morphology of fractured surfaces after tensile and flexural testing is studied using scanning electron microscope.

Natural fiber-based hybrid composites with oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) and woven jute (Jw) fibers were prepared by hand lay-up method. Epoxy resin was used as matrix and tri-layer hybrid composites of EFB/ woven jute /EFB and woven jute /EFB/ woven jute were prepared by keeping the EFB/ woven jute fiber weight ratio constant at 4:1. The chemical resistance properties of the EFB/ woven jute/EFB and woven jute /EFB/ woven jute fiber-reinforced hybrid composites were studied by using three acids, three alkalies, and three solvents. It was found from the chemical resistance test that all the composites are resistance to various chemicals. It was observed that marked reduction in void content of composites with hybridization of oil palm EFB with woven jute fiber. Density and moisture content study demonstrated that density and moisture content property was enhanced in hybrid composites. The hybrid composites showed lower impact properties than pure EFB composite. Izod impact strength of EFB/woven jute/EFB and woven jute/EFB/woven jute hybrid was found to be 72.4 and 57.9 J/m, respectively. Impact fracture surface of the composites was studied with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

AbstractMechanical properties of fiber reinforcement that can be obtained by the introduction of basalt fibers in jute fiber-reinforced polyester composites have been analyzed experimentally. Basalt/jute fiber-reinforced hybrid polymer composites were fabricated with a varying fiber percentage by using compression molding techniques. The fabricated composite plates were subjected to mechanical testing to estimate tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of the composites. The effect of fiber content on basalt/jute fiber in the composites has been studied. Addition of jute fiber into basalt fiber composite makes it a cost-effective one. Incorporation of basalt fiber into the composites was at approximately 10%, 20%, up to 90%, and the jute fiber percentage was reduced from 90%, 80%, to 10% correspondingly. Mechanical properties were investigated as per ASTM standards. Tensile and flexural strengths were tested by using a computer-assisted universal testing machine, and impact strength by using an Izod impact tester. It has been observed that the addition of jute fiber to the basalt fiber polyester composites enhanced the mechanical properties. Water absorption of hybrid composites was also analyzed and was found to be proportional to fiber percentage.

A generalized effective medium theory (EMT) is proposed to account for the fractal structure of the dispersed phase in a dispersing medium under the dilute limit. The thermal conductivity of nanofluids with fractal aggregates is studied using the proposed model. Fractal aggregates are considered as functionally graded spherical inclusions and its effective thermal conductivity is derived as a function of its fractal dimension. The results are studied for self-consistency and accuracy within the limitations of the analytical approximations used.

Natural fiber reinforced polymer composites became more attractive due to their light weight, high specific strength, biodegradability. However, some limitations e.g. low modulus, poor moisture resistance were reported. The mechanical properties of natural fiber reinforced composites can be improved by hybridization with synthetic fibers such as glass fiber. In this research, mechanical properties of short sisal-PP composites and short sisal/glass fiber hybrid composites were studied. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) was used as a compatibilizer to enhance the compatibility between the fibers and polypropylene. Effect of weight ratio of sisal and glass fiber at 30 % by weight on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Morphology of fracture surface of each composite was also observed.
