The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) has launched the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts! Building on the success of previous school health data collection, this article describes the steps that the Georgia Association of School Nurses takes to promote the collection of data to support the health of Georgia’s school-age children. Building a team, engaging stakeholders, mapping a plan of action, and developing the message are described as ways to build the capacity for data collection. Other states and NASN state affiliates may learn from the ideas presented here.

Nurses in the 21st-century are expected to be data and information literate and proficient in data management. Nurses graduating from baccalaureate programs must be able to use computers and information systems and apply data and evidence to inform practice. Those competencies are also essential for the entire nursing workforce. That puts the onus on school nurses, school nurse supervisors, school districts, and state affiliates to take responsibility for comprehensive data and information literacy professional development. Fortunately, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) has anticipated the needs of the membership. NASN included data and information capacity building as a part of The National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts!, a national standardized data set and data collection initiative.

School nurses and health office employees are the creators and caretakers of legal documentation. School nurses have an ethical and legal obligation to protect the integrity of electronic student health records. Although there are many threats to data integrity, from inadequate hardware to electrical surges, one of the most pervasive threats to data is computer viruses. There are many precautions that can be taken to protect electronic student health data from viruses in the school health office.

The National Association of School Nurses proposed the concept of certification for school nurses in the 1970s. The development and evolution of the school nurse certification process, from concept to reality, were described in the October 2000 Journal of School Nursing ( Gregory & Marcontel, 2000 ). Readers were asked to submit questions to be answered in the second article. This article describes issues and answers questions from school nurses about national certification, gives information from past and current presidents and certified school nurses regarding their experiences, and presents a forecast on the future of school nurse certification.

This has been updated in the online issue: Step Up & Be Counted! (Step Up!) is a joint initiative of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and the National Association of State School Nurse Consultants (NASSNC). The aim of Step Up! is for all school nurses across the nation to collect and submit specific, uniform data points for all their students. The program was initiated in 2014. In the second year of data collection, 2015-16, school nurses from more states contributed data, and many states reported on a larger number of school nurses reporting data. There are many stakeholders for school health data. Each one has a stake in the quality and accuracy of the health data collected and reported in schools. The joint NASN and NASSNC national school nurse data set initiative, Step Up & Be Counted!, heightens the need to assure accurate and precise data. The use of a standardized terminology allows the data on school health care delivered in local schools to be aggregated for use at the local, state, and national levels. The use of uniform terminology demands that data elements be defined and that accurate and reliable data are entered into the database. Barriers to accurate data are misunderstanding of accurate data needs, student caseloads that exceed the national recommendations, lack of electronic student health records, and electronic student health records that do not collect the indicators using the standardized terminology or definitions. The quality of the data that school nurses report and share has an impact at the personal, district, state, and national levels and influences the confidence and quality of the decisions made using that data.

Seit vielen Jahrzehnten sind vor allem in angloamerikanischen und skandinavischen Ländern spezialisierte Pflegekräfte in Schulen tätig, die als sogenannte «School (Health) Nurses» die Kinder und Jugendlichen in allen gesundheitlichen Angelegenheiten betreuen. Diese Übersichtsarbeit widmet sich der Frage, welche konkreten Aufgaben und Rollen School Nurses im internationalen Kontext übernehmen und welche davon auch in Deutschland von entsprechend qualifizierten Pflegefachkräften ausgeführt werden könnten. Mithilfe einer systematischen Literaturrecherche wurden 34 Publikationen gefunden, die allgemeine Rollen- und Aufgabenbeschreibungen von School Nurses fokussieren. Insgesamt ließen sich elf zentrale Aufgabenbereiche identifizieren. Diese umfassen unter anderem die direkte pflegerische Versorgung bei Verletzungen, Notfällen, akuten oder chronischen Erkrankungen, präventive und gesundheitsförderliche Tätigkeiten, Information, Schulung und Beratung, die Erhebung gesundheitsbezogener Probleme und Bedarfe sowie die Entwicklung und Durchführung entsprechender Angebote und die Bereiche Kommunikation, Kooperation und Vermittlung. Mit Blick auf die positiven internationalen Erfahrungen erscheint die Einführung von School Nurses in Deutschland als vielversprechender Ansatz zur Förderung von Gesundheits- und Unterstützung von Bildungszielen. Das dazu benötigte Kompetenzprofil erfordert eine Zusatzqualifikation «Schulgesundheitspflege», die - basierend auf vorhandenen internationalen Curricula - auf Hochschulniveau angesiedelt sein sollte.
