Factors Influencing Future Music Participation: A Review of Literature Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior

The theory of planned behavior (TPB) has been employed as a theoretical framework that predicts and explains an individual’s intention to engage in a certain behavior. The TPB postulates that an individual’s behavior is influenced by behavioral intentions, and behavioral intentions are caused by three distinct factors: attitude toward behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control. To holistically understand factors influencing students’ intentions for continued music participation, this article examines music education studies focused on various factors related to student intention to persist in music based on the TPB. This review of literature will support researchers in determining the direction of future investigation of students’ intentions for continued engagement in music. Furthermore, understanding and documenting these factors in student intention could aid music educators in creating teaching strategies focused on increasing student continuation in musical activities.

Recently, the awareness of energy conservation, carbon emission reduction, and environmental protection in Taiwan has begun to gradually improve, and bicycles have become an important vehicle for residents. In 2009, Kaohsiung began promoting public bicycle sharing. The number of users in that year amounted to 140,000. By 2015, the accumulated number of users reached nine million. This study adopted the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to explore the factors influencing the behavioral intentions of public bicycle users, including the three dimensions of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control, and probed into the relationship between the factors influencing the behavioral intentions of public bicycle users in Kaohsiung City and the dimensions. This study used a questionnaire to collect data and SPSS & AMOS for statistical analysis. The empirical results demonstrated that the most prominent factors influencing the behavioral intentions of public bicycle users in Kaohsiung City included perceived behavioral control, attitude, and subjective norm, in order. Among the influencing factors in the three dimensions, personal interests, main groups, and self-competence had a positive and significant correlation. Administrators should provide more incentives related to the three influencing factors to encourage the public in Kaohsiung City to use public bicycles more frequently as their short-distance travel mode, so as to achieve the purposes of saving energy, reducing carbon emissions, and protecting the urban environment.

Amplified energy demand due to technologically advanced electrical and electronic appliances has accentuated the importance of energy efficiency to overcome energy shortage and environmental concerns. As adoption of energy efficient appliances depends on perception of the consumers, this study focuses on behavioral exploration of the consumers’ intentions towards the purchase of energy efficient appliances using an extended model of the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The study is based on a survey comprising 289 respondents. Partial least square (PLS) method is used to analyze the data. The results show that the attitude, perceived behavioral control, policy information campaigns, and past-purchase experiences significantly impact behavioral intentions of the consumers, whereas subjective and moral norms are insignificant in shaping behavioral intentions. Based on analyses, policy implications emphasizing (i) strong awareness campaigns, (ii) energy efficiency incentives, and (iii) replacement initiatives are proposed to help policy makers and administrators in achieving required goals of energy efficiency and conservation. The proposed research model and policy initiatives are a blueprint for synergies among policymakers, practitioners, and researchers in understanding and shaping consumers’ behaviors towards the purchase of energy efficient products, particularly, in developing countries.

Graduate students have become the driving force of scientific research at Chinese universities. Therefore, further work is needed to understand what influences postgraduate students' academic integrity. Using the theory of planned behavior, this study investigated the relationships between postgraduates' attitude toward academic integrity, social norms (subjective, descriptive, and moral), perceived behavioral control, and intentions, and examined the moderating role of social identity in the relationship between social norms and intentions. We conducted a survey with 1,256 Chinese biomedical postgraduate students, and analyzed the data with structural equation modeling. The results show that attitude, subjective norms, descriptive norms, and perceived behavioral control influenced students' academic integrity-related behavioral intentions. The model explained over half of the variance in intentions, indicating that attitude, subjective norms, descriptive norms, and perceived behavioral control were the main variables influencing academic integrity-related behaviors. The theory of planned behavior can be applied in research on postgraduates' academic integrity.

This study aims to determine the effect of the Theory of Planned Behavior and knowledge of the intention to invest in the assembly of the Taklim Muhammadiyah Sub-District of Sukomanunggal Surabaya. Primary data retrieval in this study used a questionnaire with a sample of 40 taklim assemblies in Sukomanunggal sub-district, Surabaya. The characteristics of the sample in this study were the pilgrims who attended the recitation in the assembly of taklim Muhammadiyah, Sukomanunggal, Surabaya. The sampling technique is Non-Probability Sampling and Simple Random Sampling. This study uses a quantitative approach with multiple linear regression analysis. The endogenous variable in this study is the intention to invest, while the exogenous variable used is part of the Theory of Planned Behavior which consists of attitudes, subjective norms, and Perceived Behavior Control and Knowledge. The results of this study indicate that simultaneously and partially attitudes, subjective norms, Perceived Behavior Control, and knowledge have a significant effect on the intention to invest in the assembly of taklim members of Muhammadiyah, Sukomanunggal District, Surabaya. Suggestions for further research to add to the scope of research subjects so that more general information can be obtained about related research, and using other variables outside of this research variable because it should be suspected that there are still several other factors that can influence intention to invest.Keywords: Theory Of Planned Behaviour, Knowledge, Infaq, Intention

The Theory of Planned Behavior is widely used to predict human behaviors in many disciplines. According to the Theory of Planned Behavior, Attitude towards the target behavior, Subjective Norms about engaging in the behavior and Perceived Behavior Control influence intention. In addition, an individual's display of a certain behavior is determined by his or her intent to perform that behavior. This chapter describes the origin and history of the Theory of Planned Behavior, its purpose, its limitations and its applications in order to examine acceptance, adoption, use, and continuance of use of Information Systems and services.

Using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model, this research aimed to investigate which important factors affect the potential behavior of rural tourism tourists. It also sought to identify the effects of social networking service (SNS) use on the rural tourism using TPB model. For analysis, a partial least squares-structural equation model (PLS-SEM) was used. The results revealed that tourists were influenced by subjective norm and perceived behavior control, of which the effect of subjective norm was greater. Consumers’ use of SNS played a notable role in contributing to the strength of the relationship between intention to visit and subjective norm. Promoters and marketers of sustainable tourism can use the results to make more effective decisions in their businesses.
