Aims. This systematic review examines interventions for care of people with co-morbid chronic medical illness and anxiety/depression disorders – a group with high risks for morbidity and mortality.Methods.Systematic search of Medline 1995 to January 2011 for randomized controlled trials of treatment interventions designed for adult outpatients with diagnosed chronic medical illness (diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders, and chronic respiratory disorders) and anxiety/depression disorders.Results.Six trials studied complex interventions based on the chronic care model, and eight trials studied psychosocial interventions. Most interventions addressed the mental health aspect of the co-morbidity and showed improvements in anxiety/depression but not in the co-morbid medical disorder.Conclusions.Further research might focus on interventions integrating mental health treatment with enhanced medical care components, incorporating shared-decision making and information technology advances.

It is an established entity that thyroid hormones play an important role in mood, behavior, and cognition. Autoimmune thyroiditis, including Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), can lead to depression and anxiety disorders. It is thus important to enhance awareness among physicians about this connection to accelerate the diagnostic process. In patients with depression and anxiety disorders, a test for autoimmune thyroiditis should be performed, and in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis, a screening for psychiatric symptoms is necessary. Thus, patients presenting with anxiety or depression disorders should be treated and monitored by both an endocrinologist and a psychiatrist in liaison with each other so as to optimize their management. Moreover, an early recognition of an endocrine condition will help minimize psychiatric morbidity and hence improve health. This chapter explores anxiety, depression, and Hashimoto's disease.

ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION DISORDERS IN INMATES   ABSTRACT In the prison system, the human being becomes a number, they lose their individuality, autonomy and in addition, they may develop mental disorders. ABSTRACT Objective: Diagnostic delay is one of the major problems for patients with predominantly antibody deficiencies (PAD) that can lead to anxiety and depression disorders, like in other chronic diseases. We aimed to detect the frequencies of anxiety and depression in PAD patients. The second aim was to determine the influence of diagnosis delay on the patients’ anxiety and depression. Materials and Methods: In this prospective study, 40 patients and 50 healthy controls answered the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). We compared the anxiety, depression, and the total scores of the patients and the healthy controls. We divided the patients into two groups as delayed and early diagnosed patients according to median diagnostic delay year and compared the HADS scores of the two groups. Results: The anxiety, depression and the total scores of PAD patients were significantly higher compared to the healthy controls; (p=0.001, p=0.001, p=0.001), respectively. The HADS scores were significantly higher in the delayed diagnosis patient group than the early diagnosed patient group (p=0.001, p=0.003, p=0.001), respectively. We also confirmed this positive relationship between delayed diagnosis and the HADS scores with Spearman’s correlation analysis. Conclusion: We demonstrated that psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression are common in PAD patients, and delayed diagnosis strongly affects their anxiety and depression. Collaboration with psychologists and psychiatrists during the management of these patients may improve the quality of their life. Keywords: Predominantly antibody deficiencies, early diagnosis, anxiety, depression

Objectives - to determine the variants of psychiatric disorders in patients with laryngeal granuloma using the affectivity-stress model, based on the complex psychopathological and clinical-psychological diagnostics of anxiety-depression disorders (ADD). Material and methods. We examined 80 patients, aged from 33 to 65 years. Postintubation granuloma was diagnosed in 7 patients. GERD was diagnosed in 56 patients. 49 patients had a relapse granulomas after surgery. Results and Conclusion. The correlation of laryngeal granuloma with the disorders of the anxiety-depression spectrum (ADD) was established. In most patients, the development of granuloma occurred with underlying psychiatric disorder. The role of anxiety in the structure of ADDs and the significance of their diagnosis for the choice of therapeutic tactics is proved. It is necessary to examine the patients with laryngeal granuloma for the presence of ADDs, and to consult a psychiatrist to determine an individual therapeutic tactics.
