AC Foremost, red-seeded spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), combines high grain yield with resistance to prevalent races of common bunt (caused by Tilletia laevis Kuhn in Rabenh. and T. caries (DC.) Tul. & C. Tul.), and loose smut except T9 (caused by Ustilago tritici (Pers.) Rostr. in a semidwarf, photoperiod insensitive background. AC Foremost has improved pre-harvest sprouting tolerance compared with Biggar, AC Taber, and Genesis; improved resistance to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia recondita Roberg ex Desmaz.) and leaf spots (caused by Septoria spp. and Pyrenophora tritici repentis (Died.) Drechs.) compared with Neepawa and Biggar, and earlier maturity compared with Biggar, AC Taber, and Genesis. AC Foremost is eligible for grades of the Canada Prairie Spring (Red) wheat class. A total of 865 spring wheat varieties, and selections from the 14, 28 and 42 chromosome groups, were inoculated in 3 successive years with a mixture of Canadian collections of loose smut, Ustilago tritici (Pers.) Rostr. At the end of the first year, 231 were rated immune; after the second inoculation, 188; and after the third, 162. These included 116 from the 42 chromosome group, 43 from the 28, and 3 from the 14. Although some of the reduction in immune or resistant types after the first year may have resulted from escapes, it is probable that most of these showed susceptibility to new collections added in the second and third years.

Glenavon hard red extra strong spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is adapted to the Canadian prairies. It combines 2 to 6% higher grain yield with improved test weight compared to AC Corinne, Glenlea and Wildcat. It is resistant to moderately resistant to prevalent races of leaf and stem rust, resistant to loose smut, and of intermediate resistance to common bunt. Glenavon is eligible for all grades of the Canada Western Extra Strong wheat class. AAC Elie hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has grain yield and time to maturity within the range of the checks. AAC Elie has an awned spike, a low lodging score indicative of strong straw, and a short plant stature typical of a semidwarf. These traits were comparable to the check Carberry. AAC Elie expressed resistance to prevalent races of leaf and stem rust, and intermediate resistance to fusarium head blight, yellow rust, common bunt, and loose smut. Compared with the five Canada Western Red Spring checks, AAC Elie has improved flour yield, and lower flower ash. AAC Elie is eligible for grades of Canada Western Red Spring.
