ABSTRACT Objectives: to understand the determinants involved in the mental suffering of schoolchildren on the French-Brazilian border. Methods: a qualitative study was conducted with children from 6 to 12 years of age from four State schools in the municipality of Oiapoque, located on the French-Brazilian border. The data were obtained through interviews, analyzed by the IRAMUTEQ software, and interpreted in the light of the Dahlgren and Whitehead’s social determinants of health model. Results: data indicate that the mental suffering experienced by children, especially characterized by anxious symptoms, such as concern of becoming fat and worries, were permeated by social situations that children went through daily, such as family abandonment, domestic violence, and bullying. Final Considerations: social determinants can be predictors of mental suffering in children, especially in environments of extreme vulnerability, such as the border, in a context of financial difficulties, domestic violence, and absence of parenting.

This study is a qualitative study using objective approach. Research objectives of this study are describing the historical background of Chinese in Makassar and acculturation of Makassarese Chinese in the field of art. The data is collected through interview, observations, and review of literature. In processing the data, there are three techniques used: (1) Data Reduction; (2) Display Data; and (3) Conclusion Drawing and Verification. The results of the study reveal that Chinese came to Indonesia since centuries ago during dynastic war in Cina. They came in Makssar during Dinasti Tang on 15th. They came gradually and began to settle in Makassar during the reign of Kerajaan Gowa. This was the beginning of acculturation. At the time, they mingle with indigenous people and began to pursue various fields, including in art and culture. In music, one of Chinese named Ho Eng Djie was famous for his songs such as Amma Ciang or Atti Raja. In addition, a Chinese writer was famous with his work, Pantoen Melajoe Makassar.

Providing effective health interventions and achieving equity in health need to apply the community-based approaches such as social determinants of health. In the military organizations, these determinants have received less attention from the military health researchers and policymakers. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and explain the social determinants affecting the health of military forces in Iran. This was a qualitative study which was conducted in 2014. The required data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed through Conventional Content Analysis. The studied sample consisted of 22 military health experts, policymakers, and senior managers selected using purposeful sampling method with maximum variation sampling. MAXQDA.2007 was used to analyze the collected data. After analyzing the collected data, two main contents, that is, “general social determinants of health” and “military social determinants of health,” with 22 themes and 90 subthemes were identified as the social determinants of military forces’ health. Main themes were religious rule, spirituality promotion policies, international military factors, military command, and so forth. Given the role and importance of social factors determining the military forces’ health, it can be recommended that the military organizations should pay more attention to these determinants in making policies and creating social, economic, and cultural structures for their forces.
