Sustainable development, as a generally accepted concept of modern society, implies the protection of the environment as one of the basic goals. This goal is achieved, among other things, through the use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. The improvement of energy efficiency and application of renewable energy sources should be incorporated while preserving the economic interests of the state. In order to harmonize these interests, the state must introduce the policy in the field of energy, which will simultaneously take care of both the environment and the economy. Among the most important instruments of such a policy are legal regulations. The Republic of Serbia has an extensive and thoroughly structured system of regulations in the field of energy efficiency. The mere existence of regulations in this area is not enough. It is only a necessary precondition for their consistent application, as well as control of the application by inspection bodies.

The cause of many environmental problems currently discussed may be imputed to current standard of production and consumption of energy, which is not consistent to the sustainable development's concept. On the other hand, energy is a key element of modern society and, without an adequate supply, its development will be limited. Thus, it is clear that the demand for energy, particularly in development countries, shall grow in coming years; so it is up to policy makers to develop mechanisms and encourage a transition into renewable (or sustainable) energy sources. At that point, the Environmental Law must operate along with the policy makers, by coordinating the necessary means to achieve predetermined goals, through public policies and programs - which are generically composed of command and control instruments and economic instruments. This study aims to illustrate those challenges with the discussion of two public programs implemented in Brazil for those purposes: "Light for All" and "Program of Incentives for Alternative Energy Sources" - PROINFRA.

<p>The integration of renewable energy sources in modern society has been given priority as these sources are regarded environmentally friendly. However, the variability of natural energy sources, combined with that of energy consumption, demands a different management of the energy system. In this work, we investigate the uncertainty of all variables combined, in order to take this variability into account in energy management.</p><p>Acknowledgement: This research is conducted within the frame of the undergraduate course "Stochastic Methods" of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). The School of Civil Engineering of NTUA provided moral support for the participation of the students in the Assembly.</p>

The modern society is, nowadays, facing two major problems: the energy sources depletion and the degradation of the ecologic system because of wastes rejection. The energetic valorization of wastes contributes on the resolution of both problems. In the present work, a feasibility study of an industrial pilot scale installation for the production of biodiesel from waste grease traps is lead. The installation is meant to transform 1000 tons of fat trap grease per year to biodiesel by transesterification. The daily production of the unit reaches 3200 l of biodiesel. All necessary equipments were sized following process engineering design and based on lab scale optimization experiments. Installation energy balance was also realized and it showed that the energy required for the installation functioning does not exceed 3.5% of the heating value of produced biodiesel.

How natural resources are used in modern society is considered a high-priority topic within national and international political and social debate. Increases in energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy sources and emission control are important aspects of this subject that must be considered. A deeper understanding of existing infrastructure and the willingness to change on an individual and social level are needed, while determining factors like demographic change are taken into account. This paper introduces the energy-efficient city of tomorrow as a city of socio-technical networks that interact and are a basis for energy-related optimizations. Furthermore, the authors discuss the special role that IT-enabled services can play in understanding and changing those networks. To illustrate, the authors present a service as a case study that illustrates how services can provides relevant information and help to induce change.
