In September 2010 Suresh Krishna, vice president of operations and integration at Polaris Industries Inc., a manufacturer of all-terrain vehicles, Side-by-Sides, and snowmobiles, needed to recommend a location for a new plant to manufacture the company's Side-by-Side vehicles. The economic slowdown in the United States had put considerable pressure on Polaris's profits, so the company was considering whether it should follow the lead of other manufacturers and open a facility in a country with lower labor costs. China and Mexico were shortlisted as possible locations for the new factory, which would be the first Polaris manufacturing facility located outside the Midwestern United States. By the end of the year Krishna needed to recommend to the board whether Polaris should build a new plant abroad (near-shored in Mexico or off-shored in China) or continue to manufacture in its American facilities. Evaluate tradeoffs between different geographic locations when establishing a manufacturing facility (off-shoring, near-shoring, and on-shoring) Run a sensitivity analysis on total cost Assess the impact of transportation costs, exchange rates, labor cost rates, lead times, and other assumptions on total costs Identify qualitative factors to be considered when deciding between non-U.S. facility locations, transportation time variability, consumer perceptions, and cultural differences

<p>Organizations need to be ambidextrous to acquire new capabilities to be compatible with changing business environment and at the same time to employ its available capabilities to achieve the efficiency. The leadership contributes in building organizational ambidexterity through creating the context of ambidexterity. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the impact of strategic leadership on the organizational ambidexterity of the (94) Jordanian chemical manufacturing companies operating at King Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein Industrial City. The sample of the study includes all the study population. The sampling unit and analysis (respondents) composed of the Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of all target companies. In order to achieve the study objectives, the researcher designed a questionnaire to collect the required data from study sample. To test the hypotheses the multiple regression analysis used. Empirical results indicated that the strategic leadership has a positive impact on organizational ambidexterity. Based on the results of the study, the strategic leader must be having the following skills: visioning, focusing, and implementing. In addition, researchers should conduct additional studies in strategic leadership and organizational ambidexterity in the different industries and contexts, especially in the service companies and taking other dimensions of strategic leadership rather than visioning, focusing, and implementing.</p>

AbstractDebottlenecking and estimating fouling in a clarifier piping system for the expansion of an existing chemical manufacturing facility in the U.S. Gulf Coast was analyzed and modified. The existing clarifier piping system fitting data was gathered for the real-world operation from the field. This data was used in the Applied Flow Technology (AFT) Fathom, a program used to study hydraulic systems. The hydraulic results with and without recommended piping modifications along with changing piping roughness factors were also analyzed. The two piping roughness factor cases tested were roughness of 0.152 mm and fouling of 25.4 mm. The AFT Fathom results showed that without piping modifications and specifying fouling of 25.4 mm, required flow cannot be established due to insufficient driving force for liquid movement. The measured field flow data confirmed that the reduced clarifier capacity was due to high pressure losses in the hydraulic system. Also, it was found that the existing clarifier nozzle was inadequately designed originally, and replacing the nozzle showed an increase in the clarifier capacity due to reduced entrainment of the air. These modifications were further adapted in the plant expansion and operations were validated using the actual plant data. The plant data matched closely with the estimated capacities of the clarifiers. AFT Fathom hydraulic software was effective in predicting a fouling severity in the clarifier piping system and debottlenecking of the clarifier capacity was done. The conclusions derived from this study can be used all over the world where clarifiers are utilized.

Industrialization of building construction through offsite construction and modularization is an effective approach for improving performance of construction projects. In a modular construction approach, building components are produced in a well-controlled factory environment. The components are then delivered to site, in sequence, for installation by site crews. This process reduces construction waste, improves product quality, and minimizes onsite safety incidents. As the market conditions are rapidly changing, the demand for more customized and unique products is increasing. Customers increasingly demand customized dwellings to reflect their cultural tastes and personal preferences. Cabinets in the house, kitchen or otherwise, are building components that constitute a large portion of the visible customization that customers are interested in. This paper focuses on the analysis of records in Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) at a cabinet manufacturing facility in Alberta, Canada. An NCR record represents a defect in any product that needs a repair or rework; it captures several attributes of the defective part, such as the job number, wood species, stain, the date and time when the record is created, etc. The systematic approach presented in this study employs data analytics to the collection, cleaning, and analysis of the NCR dataset. The dataset is first analyzed as per existing operations. Various data pre-processing techniques, including attribute and instance selection and transformation, are then applied to clean the dataset. The results show that most of the “Rework” results from administrative or product handling errors, while the majority of “Repairs” result from product finishing errors. The impact of repairing the defective parts is discussed, and recommendations to reduce the number of NCRs and thereby enhance the performance of operations are presented.

Provided that green supply chain management (GSCM) practices that integrate ecological thinking have been emphasized by increasing works of research, the impacts that may be posed by these practices on the environmental sustainability of manufacturing companies are not unexpected. Nevertheless, GSCM is capable of improving the performance of manufacturing firms in various aspects. Pertaining to this, this research aims to explore the application of GSCM practices and the effects they pose on organizational performance. To be specific, in this study, the results of the application of a set of internal and external GSCM practices on various aspects of organizational performance were investigated. Furthermore, according to the data collected, which were from 121 food, pharmaceuticals survey questionnaires, and chemical manufacturing companies in Palestine, statistical analyses were conducted. Moreover, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized for the assessment of the hypotheses associated with the application of the internal and external GSCM practices and organizational performance. However, the findings of this research will be important specifically for the manufacturing organizations which aim for the enhancement of their organizational performance.
