Such association has not been studied for country familiarity variable, and for Peruvian gastronomy. A qualitative method to compile the primary information and the survey technique was used. Additionally, a questionnaire of closed questions was applied to undergraduate and graduate students in two selected samples that correspond to the consumers of two countries with different levels of familiarity with Peru: United States whose level of familiarity is high and France whose level of familiarity is low. It was concluded that there is a positive relation between the intent to purchase of Peruvian gastronomy with the country image of Peru, the gastronomy’s product image, the familiarity with Peru, and the gastronomy’s product familiarity. In addition, the country image of Peru is statistically significant associated with purchase intention of Peruvian gastronomy for the case of foreign consumers with high and low familiarity with Peru.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of China’s image as a country on consumers’ evaluations of brands. Drawing on the literature pertaining to country images and country-of-origin effect, a research model was developed to evaluate country image, corporate image and brand image. Design/methodology/approach To test the model and investigate the effects of country, corporate and brand image on brand attitude and purchase intention, a survey was conducted that examined Korean consumers’ attitudes toward well-known Chinese brands. Findings China’s country image was found to comprise four dimensions: political image, economic image, citizen image and country relationship image. Country image had a direct positive effect on brand attitude, and through brand attitude, country image had an indirect positive effect on purchase intention. Corporate image and brand image had a positive effect on brand attitude and a direct positive effect on purchase intention. In addition, country image had a positive effect on corporate image, while through corporate image, country image had an indirect positive effect on brand image. Originality/value These findings not only offer theoretical evidence for research on China’s country image, but also provide empirical evidence to support the “going global” strategies of Chinese enterprises.

Recently, South Korea’s decision to deploy an advanced U.S. missile defense system has drawn neighboring China’s strong protests. Amid this political tension between both countries, the purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between this specific political conflict and consumers’ purchase intention. Based on previous literature, this study suggests a research model that defines the relationship between international political conflict, country image (i.e., affective country image and cognitive country image) and purchase intention. Proposed hypotheses suggest that international political conflict between foreign firms’ host and home countries is negatively associated with consumers’ purchase intention toward foreign firms’ products in the host country by hurting cognitive and affective image of the home country. This study contributes to understanding the underlying mechanism on how international political conflict influences consumers’ purchase intentions.
