A phenomenon that the damping ratio will decrease when the power flows from both sides to the primary power grid is summarized and analyzed in the paper. Based on analysis of the damping ratio change of West Inner Mongolia-Shandong oscillation under the sequential operation mode and the hedge operation mode, a three-machine equivalent system is established to study edge to edge (ETE) oscillation mode under hedge operating mode of the power system. The influence of magnitudes and trends of power flow on damping ratio is analyzed, and the reason that why damping ratios decreases when both sides send power to the mid-side power grid is explained.

Power system small signal stability concerns the ability of the power system to maintain stability subject to small disturbances. The analysis of small signal stability often has to deal with high-order system matrix due to the large number of generating units so that it is not easy to calculate and analyze the original system matrix and the whole set of eigenvalues. In this paper a new approach is proposed to take advantage of the specific feature of the parallel structure of artificial neural network for calculating the most critical eigenvalue or all eigenvalues of the unstable oscillation mode. The developed algorithm is tested on a sample power system to validate the feasibility of the proposed method for the calculation of the critical eigenvalue.

With the fast development of the wind power, security constraints of power systems have become the bottleneck of the acceptable capacity for wind power. The underdamping oscillation modes of the inter-area is an important aspect of the constraints. In this paper, an equivalent model of a power system with wind plants has been established, and the impact of the integration of the large-scale wind power on the inter-area oscillation modes has been studied based on the frequency-domain and time-domain simulations. The results indicate that the damping of inter-area oscillation mode can be enhanced by the replacement of synchronous generators (SGs) with the wind generators. The enhancing degree is up to the participation value of the SGs replaced. The conclusion has been verified by the actual system example of Xinjiang-Northwest grid. It can provide a reference for system programming and operation.

With the rapid development of interconnected power grid, the phenomenon of power system low-frequency oscillation appears unavoidably. Then, the appearance of wide-area measurement system provided a supporting technology for better scout low-frequency oscillation system and better recognize the oscillation mode . In this paper, the existing oscillation mode identifying methods are analyzed from the viewpoint of calculation speed, criterion, calculation accuracy, etc. Mainly compared the applicability of two methods, Prony and ESPRIT . Based on the above research, a new idea of monitoring power system low frequency oscillation based on WAMS is put forward in this paper.

Abstract Fast measurements of power system quantities available through wide-area measurement systems enables direct observations for power system electromechanical oscillations. But the raw observations data need to be processed to obtain the quantitative measures required to make any inference regarding the power system state. A detailed discussion is presented for the theory behind the general problem of oscillatory mode indentification. This paper presents some results on oscillation mode identification applied to a wide-area frequency measurements system. Guidelines for selection of parametes for obtaining most reliable results from the applied method are provided. Finally, some results on real measurements are presented with our inference on them.

Recently, fuzzy logic control has widely received attention in various power system applications, despite difficulties of obtaining its control rules and membership functions. Nowadays, power systems consist of multiple areas where load variations with abrupt changes always exist, and proper control rules and membership functions could hardly be achieved. This paper proposes a practical design of fuzzy logic controllers for superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) based on a wide area synchronized phasor measurement for enhancing the stability of an interconnected power system. Moreover, a heuristic method is applied for determining control rules and membership functions. The estimated model is determined via a simplified oscillation model for detection and assessment of an approximated inter-area oscillation mode. Finally, some simulation studies based on a two-area four-machine power system are carried out to examine the performance and effectiveness of the designed fuzzy SMES controller.
