The honeycomb design of Fasoulas (1973) and the independent culling methods of McVetty and Evans (1980) were used to select among spaced plants of two generations (F2 and F4) of two crosses of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) for yield potential. Single plants were planted in a hexagon pattern with 60 cm interplant spacing for the honeycomb selection method and in a grid pattern with 60 cm interplant spacing for the independent culling selection method, on Riverdale silty loam soil at Winnipeg in 1983. Three selected groups per cross and generation were developed using honeycomb, independent culling and random selection. The randomly selected population served as a check against which to evaluate the effectiveness of the honeycomb and independent culling selection methods. Response to selection, as measured by the differences in mean yields among the three selection groups determined by replicated yield trials of derived F3 or F5 families indicated that neither selection method was effective. Response to selection, as measured by the number of high yielding families retained by either honeycomb or independent culling methods compared with the number retained by random selection also indicated that neither selection procedure was effective. Correlations between F2 and F4 single plant characters and plot characters on corresponding F3 or F5 families were low and generally nonsignificant. Heritability of single plant yield ranged from zero in most cases to 0.44 for one cross, generation and selection method. Heritabilities for both total dry matter and harvest index were not significantly different from zero. It is concluded that the response to selection is too small for either selection method to warrant use in faba bean breeding programs.Key words: Vicia faba L., early generation selection, heritability, faba bean

The article, basing on the analysis of selected media texts with reference to narrative from the leading Ukrainian newspapers «Dzerkalo Tyzhnia» (Weekly Mirror), «Den» (Day), «Ukraina Moloda» (Young Ukraine) for 2016–2020, the semantic and content characteristics of the «narrative», «strategic narrative», «small narratives» nominations has established; the directions of the semantic realization of the meaning of the narrative and its possibilities in the process of international strategic communications aimed at both external and internal audience, are outlined. It is proved that the main task of a strategic, or national, narrative is a reasoned explanation to the state population and interested audiences of specific realities, intentions, plans; justification of certain directions of state activity aimed at partners, at opponents and those occupying a neutral position.

There are divided the spheres of use of different narratological nominations: in international communications and in scientific discourse, the conceptual foundations of state identity and international interaction are referred to as strategic narrative or grand narrative, in publicistic discourse the narrative nomination is used, more rarely – historical narrative, national narrative.

The scientific novelty of the research is that the focus is on the media aspect of the use of one of the key concepts of strategic communications and the role of the media in its implementation.

The main general scientific methods used in this article are descriptive and comparative ones, as well as analysis and synthesis. The following empirical methods were also used: solid selection method (solid selection method for allocation texts with the «narrative» lexeme; quantitative method of content analysis with elements of qualitative one – for characterizing the semantic of the «narrative» term).

The results of the study can be used in the complex research of the technology of international strategic communications and in the practical activity of specialists in international strategic communications, a new trend in Ukraine, which is currently under active institutionalization.
Key words: international strategic communications, propaganda, narrative, strategic narrative, grand narrative, «small narratives».

The ability to interact in the virtual world, the network is the ability to choose. The priority direction in the work of the teacher is the search for tools that can provide real assistance to the student in providing comfort at a distance, increasing the motivation of students to choose such tools. The article reveals the features of the virtual selection method, which is a technology for selecting and modifying source tasks to improve their ergonomics. The optimal configuration of a set of manuals for distance education is determined by questioning and calculating the parameters of the standard (ideal).
