This study aims to establish whether the repurchasing of treasury shares by a holding company is a regular occurrence for companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE); whether these repurchasing companies have complied with the relevant legal and reporting requirements; and what their stated motivations were for these repurchases. In a sample of 251 companies listed on the JSE from 1999 till their 2009 financial year-end, 120 (47,8%) companies executed share repurchases. Thirty-six (30%) of the 120 companies repurchased treasury shares from their subsidiaries in 55 different transactions, representing 22% of the total number of shares repurchased.Companies which repurchase treasury shares do not always comply with the legal requirements (such as obligatory Security News Agency (SENS) announcements and circulars); and the accounting requirements of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) (relevant to the disclosure of the reconciliation of the number of shares in issue) are applied in an inconsistent manner in annual reports. The most common reason for the repurchase of treasury shares was that the 10% limit (on treasury shares held by subsidiaries) had nearly been reached. Various business purposes were also given. Income tax implications did not seem to be a conclusive motivation for repurchasing treasury shares. The repurchase of treasury shares by the holding company is not allowed in most other countries, like the UK, and presents unique challenges to the South African share repurchase environment. More stringent application of the JSE Listing Requirements, as well as better guidance on the IFRS disclosure requirement on the reconciliation of the number of shares in issue, is needed in South Africa. This will enable stakeholders to make better-informed decisions and will also assist research on share repurchases. This material is based upon work supported financially by the National Research Foundation. Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of financial reporting quality (FRQ) on share price movement (SPM) of listed companies in an emerging and developing economy – Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach The study analyzed 296 annual reports for the year 2015 and 2016 in examining the effect of FRQ on SPM. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model is used to examine the hypothesized relationship among the variables. A modified version of Lang et al. (2003) has been adopted in measuring the SPM. FRQ is measured using the qualitative characteristics approach as defined by the International Financial Reporting Standard Framework and used by Beest et al. (2009) and Braam and Beest (2013). Findings The study finds a positive association (though not significant statistically) between the FRQ and SPM in the country’s leading stock exchange (Dhaka stock exchange). Furthermore, the effect of enhancing quality on SPM is found to be stronger as compared to fundamental quality. Majority of the FRQ constructs demonstrate an improvement in the quality score in the year 2016 as compared to 2015 except for relevance. Research limitations/implications The key limitation of the study is that it focuses only on two years (2015 and 2016) annual reports data in measuring FRQ and its effect on SPM. Originality/value The study uses qualitative characteristics approach in measuring the FRQ and to examine its effect on SPM using the context of an emerging and developing economy – the case of Bangladesh.

Abstract Data Science is one of today’s most rapidly growing academic fields and has significant implications for all conventional scientific studies. However, most of the relevant studies so far have been limited to one or several facets of Data Science from a specific application domain perspective and fail to discuss its theoretical framework. Data Science is a novel science in that its research goals, perspectives, and body of knowledge is distinct from other sciences. The core theories of Data Science are the DIKW pyramid, data-intensive scientific discovery, data science lifecycle, data wrangling or munging, big data analytics, data management and governance, data products development, and big data visualization. Six main trends characterize the recent theoretical studies on Data Science: growing significance of DataOps, the rise of citizen data scientists, enabling augmented data science, diversity of domain-specific data science, and implementing data stories as data products. The further development of Data Science should prioritize four ways to turning challenges into opportunities: accelerating theoretical studies of data science, the trade-off between explainability and performance, achieving data ethics, privacy and trust, and aligning academic curricula to industrial needs.

The actual economic environment, which is in a continuous dynamic, obligates the economic entities to rethink their periodic performance reporting method. In this context, drafting a report of interest for the stakeholders, which would contain financial as well as non-financial information, becomes a challenge. Integrating the exigencies of the sustainable development of economic, social and environment nature in a sustainable report of performance represents in the long run an indispensable requirement for any stock exchange listed company. This paper aims to analyse three characteristics of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BSE) listed companies: dimension (ED), rentability (ARR) and company recognition (EER). The control variable (EO) is given by the objectives the company follows. The data in this paper has been collected from annual reports drafted by BSE listed companies on the Regulated Market referring to 2019. The results obtained through econometric research have revealed the fact that the objectives (EO), the dimension (ED) and the company’s rentability (ARR) have a significant impact on the sustainable reporting of their performance.

This study examines voluntary IC disclosure provided by Sri Lankan firms in annual reports from the year 2016/17. A 100-firms sample, from the Colombo stock exchange (CSE)-listed firms. Findings suggest that Sri Lankan firms, on average, are aware of the significance of IC disclosure. Concerning the descriptive analysis, the results indicate that most of the information reported (41 percent) is related to human capital; 31 percent is related to relational capital and the 21 percent concerns structural capital disclosure. The results also suggest that industry nature and firm size play a key role as a determinant for the disclosure of IC in Sri Lankan annual reports. As the no definite IC disclosure framework has been established within Sri Lankan firms. Concurrently as Sri Lanka passes through its post-war-recovery phase, reform of its mutually agreed financial reporting framework is essential to reduces information asymmetry and therefore reducing the agency costs.
