The motion of a robot manipulator submerged in water is strongly affected by fluid forces, and it is an important technique to avoid their influence on the motion of an aquarobot manipulator to achieve high-speed, precise motion. This paper deals with extension of the technique of air bubble ejection from the manipulator surface, i.e., the mechanisms of reduction of drag force by air bubble ejection and its effects on the control of the aquarobot manipulator. Using a two-degree-of-freedom and two-joint manipulator, experiments were performed and the following major results were obtained: (1) There exists a particular pattern of air bubble ejection for reduction fluid drag force acting on the manipulator and it resulted in reduction of drag force by 25% compared to that for no air bubble ejection. (2) There exists a particular pattern of air bubble ejection that brought a 40% reduction of the control torque required for compensating the fluid drag force. (3) The major mechanisms for drag force reduction were found to be the controlled flow pattern around the manipulator formed by ejecting air bubbles. However, it is noted that these effects of air bubble ejection were dependent on the mode of manipulator motion.

ABSTRACTThe analysis of the aerodynamic environment of the re-entry vehicle attaches great importance to the design of the novel drag reduction strategies, and the combinational spike and jet concept has shown promising application for the drag reduction in supersonic flows. In this paper, the drag force reduction mechanism induced by the combinational spike and lateral jet concept with the freestream Mach number being 5.9332 has been investigated numerically by means of the two-dimensional axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the shear stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model, and the effects of the lateral jet location and its number on the drag reduction of the blunt body have been evaluated. The obtained results show that the drag force of the blunt body can be reduced more profoundly when employing the dual lateral jets, and its maximum percentage is 38.81%, with the locations of the first and second lateral jets arranged suitably. The interaction between the leading shock wave and the first lateral jet has a great impact on the drag force reduction. The drag force reduction is more evident when the interaction is stronger. Due to the inclusion of the lateral jet, the pressure intensity at the reattachment point of the blunt body decreases sharply, as well as the temperature near the walls of the spike and the blunt body, and this implies that the multi-lateral jet is beneficial for the drag reduction.

Abstract The paper provides simulation results for SUP (Stand Up Paddle) board appendage resistance. Additional propulsion is added to the SUP board. It is equipped with a waterjet. The waterjet is attached to the board rudder. This increases the drag coefficient for rudder five times. To reduce the drag variable, design options for the waterjet duct were proposed. The simulation tests were performed using SolidWorks Flow software using two types of simulations, namely, the pressure on the body and the flow around the body. The objective was to streamline the bluff duct of the waterjet and thus to create the appendage design with minimum drag force from fluid flow and possibly greater Inlet Velocity Ratio. Calculations showed that rounding-off the edges of waterjet duct resulted in 35 % of drag coefficient reduction, while further streamlining reduced it by additional 10 %.
