Inducible defenses are a wide-spread defensive mechanism in Daphnia. For example, D. cucullata is known to form different adaptive morphologies under changing environmental conditions. In this species, predator presence elicits defensive helmets. Defended animals perform better and survive more frequently in predation attempts. Another peculiarity of D. cucullata is that they develop these defenses also in response to turbulence. The mechanisms that underly this defensive effect are so far unclear. Therefore, we investigated the three-dimensional morphology of the typical, the turbulence- and Chaoborus-exposed morph and analyzed their surface and volume alterations. We furthermore measured the swimming velocities of these morphs. With the determined shapes and the measured velocities, we simulated the drag force under different angles of attack and determined the energy necessary to move through the water. In the light of previous findings and hypotheses we here discuss biomechanical mechanisms that improve D. cucullata’s fitness in the investigated environments.

We study the Bose polaron problem in a nonequilibrium setting, by considering an impurity embedded in a quantum fluid of light realized by exciton-polaritons in a microcavity, subject to a coherent drive and dissipation on account of pump and cavity losses. We obtain the polaron effective mass, the drag force acting on the impurity, and determine polaron trajectories at a semiclassical level. We find different dynamical regimes, originating from the unique features of the excitation spectrum of driven-dissipative polariton fluids, in particular a non-trivial regime of acceleration against the flow. Our work promotes the study of impurity dynamics as an alternative testbed for probing superfluidity in quantum fluids of light.

A mathematical description of the motion of a cavity on the liquid surface under an oblique action of a gas jet is obtained using the well-known expressions for the movement of a gas bubble in a liquid. The boundary of the viscous drag force domination over the form drag force is determined. The impingement of the gas jet on the liquid surface is considered as a dynamic object of the automatic control theory. It is found that the dynamic properties of the two-phase system "gas jet - liquid" are described by the integrator equations. Using a specially designed setup, the transient response of the "gas jet - liquid" system were experimentally obtained for the aerodynamic action at angles of 20º and 50º to the surfaces of liquids with the viscosities of 0.71 and 26.1 Pa•s (Reynolds number Re < 2). The research results are necessary for the analysis of the non-contact aerodynamic method of liquid viscosity measurements.

In this paper a ground safety assessment model is introduced based on the probability estimation of possible impact positions when unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashes on the ground. By incorporating the random uncertainties during the descending process, risks associated with UAV’s ground crash are estimated accurately. The number of victims on the ground per flight hour is selected as the indicative index to evaluate the risk levels of the corresponding ground area. We mainly focus on the analysis of uncertainties that usually appear in drag coefficient which would generate a great amount of effects on the travelled horizontal distance from the failure point to the impact point on the ground, which further influences the possible impact positions. The drag force in the air, failure velocity of a UAV, and wind effects in the local area are all considered in the proposed model, as well as ground features, including sheltering effects on the ground, UAV parameter settings, and distribution of local population. Uncertainties in drag force when a UAV descends, UAV’s initial horizontal and vertical speeds at failure point, and local wind patterns are all considered as the indispensable factors in the proposed model. Especially the probability of fatality once hit by the UAV’s debris is explored to make the safety assessment more reliable and valuable. In the end, the actual UAV parameters and official historical weather data are used to estimate the risks in a real operation environment when a failure event happens at a legal flying height. Experimental results are given based on different types of UAVs and random effects in the descent. The results show that all the operations of all kinds of UAVs selected in the validation are so dangerous that the safety of people on the ground cannot be guaranteed, whose value is much bigger than the manned aircraft safety criterion 10−7.

The critical hydraulic gradient of cohesive soil is an important condition for judging soil piping. For force analysis of movable particles in pore channels of soil, this study proposes to consider the influence of surrounding particles on the drag force of movable particles by water flow. According to the principle of relative motion, considering the interaction force between moving objects in still water, the value of the drag force of water flow that is affected by surrounding particles is calculated, to derive the method of the critical hydraulic gradient. This calculation method is suitable for the results of previous piping tests, and the method is accurate and concise.

Specification of the frictional resistance values of tankers is the first step in managing their fuel consumption. Drag force of a very large crude oil carrier has been calculated using the numerical simulation method. With application of the ANSYS CFX software, the scaled model of the mentioned tanker with the length of 2.74 meters, width of 0.5 meters, draft of 0.17 meters was used for numerical simulation of the drag force in the tanker. Furthermore, the numerical solution of the drag force of the model was performed for 5 different speeds ranging from 0.65 to 0.85m/s. Based on the validations carried out, with mean drafts of 8 and 16.5cm, the difference between the results of the experimental and numerical models at low speeds was about 7%. However, the difference was observed to be up to 15% at higher Froude numbers. The results of the present study with respect to the SALINA are based on the method presented in ISO 19030 standard addressing the performance monitoring during vessel servicing.

Traditionally, circular cross-section towers have been used as supporting systems of wind turbines, but weaknesses have become apparent with recent upsizing of wind turbines. Thus, polygonal cross-section towers have been proposed and used in Europe. In this study, the effects of polygonal cross-sections on the aeroelastic and aerodynamic characteristics of wind turbines were examined through a series of wind tunnel tests. Aeroelastic tests showed that a square cross-section tower showed instability vibrations, and polygonal cross-section towers showed limited vibrations for tower-only cases. However, for wind turbines with various polygonal cross-section towers, no instability vibrations were observed, and displacements increased proportionally to the square of mean wind speed. Furthermore, pressure measurements showed that local force coefficients changed largely depending on wind direction and azimuth angle. Local drag force coefficients decreased with increasing number of tower sides, approaching those of the tower-only case, and local lift force coefficients showed larger absolute values than those of the tower-only case. The maximum mean and fluctuating drag force and the maximum fluctuating lift coefficients at each height decreased with increasing number of tower sides.

Abstract In the present article, the analytical solution for creeping motion of a drop/bubble characterized by insoluble surfactant is examined at the instant it passes the center of a spherical container filled with Newtonian fluid at low Reynolds number. The presence of surfactant characterizes the interfacial region by an axisymmetric interfacial tension gradient and coefficient of surface dilatational viscosity. Under the assumption of the small capillary number, the deformation of spherical phase interface is not taken into account. The computations not only yield information on drag force and wall correction factor, but also on interfacial velocity and flow field for different values of surface tension gradient and surface dilatational viscosity. In the limiting cases, the analytical solutions describing the drag force and wall correction factor for a drop in a bounded medium reduces to expressions previously stated by other authors in literature. The results reveal the strong influence of the surface dilatational viscosity and surface tension gradient on the motion of drop/bubble. Increasing the surface tension gradient and surface dilatational viscosity, results in linear variation of drag force. When the surface tension gradient increases, the drag force for unbounded medium increases more as compared to the bounded medium hence wall correction factor decreases with increase in surface tension gradient whereas it increases with increase in surface dilatational viscosity.

Abstract In accepted models, magnetic tension drives reconnected magnetic flux away from the reconnection site at the local Alfvén speed. Numerous observational signatures of these outflows have been identified in solar flares, notable among them being supra-arcade downflows (SADs), almost none move at the Alfvén speed as predicted by models. Well-studied examples of SADs or SAD loops found in the flare of 2017 September 10 (SOL2017-09-10T15:35:00) move at a quarter or less of the expected Alfvén speed. Among those reasons posited to explain such discrepancies is the possibility that reconnected flux experiences a drag force during its outflow. Drag has not been included in previous reconnection models. Here, we develop the first such model in order to test the possibility that drag can explain sub-alfveńic reconnection outflows. Our model uses thin flux tube dynamics, previously shown to match features of flare observations other than outflow speed, including for the 2017 September 10 flare. We supplement the dynamics with a drag force representing the tube’s interaction with surrounding plasma through the formation of a wake. The wake’s width appears as a parameter in the force. We perform simulations, varying the drag parameter and synthesizing EUV observations, to test whether a drag force can produce a reasonable fit to observed features of the September 10 flare. We find that that slower retraction increases the brightness of emission and lowers the temperature of the synthetic plasma sheet. With proper choice of parameters the drag enables the simulation to agree reasonably with the observations.
