Psychological disorders are a substantial part of the disease burden in many developing countries, yet few health services are directed toward the detection and treatment of these disorders. The relationship between psychological disorders and physical health problems was investigated by means of a community survey (N =653) in a small village in Nepal, using a shortened version of the DSM-III-R Checklist to estimate the prevalence of several psychological disorders and a version of the Cornell Medical Index to assess physical illness symptoms. Results indicate that approximately 18.4 percent of this rural population has had a diagnosable mental illness. Moreover, there is substantial overlap between physical health problems and psychological disorder for those with a psychological disorder (32.5%). The findings indicate that health providers in developing countries need to screen for psychological disorders as a standard part of health assessments.

BackgroundPrevious studies have documented associations between mental and physical health problems in cross-sectional studies, yet little is known about these relationships over time or the specificity of these associations. The aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between mental health problems in childhood at age 8 years and physical disorders in adulthood at ages 18–23 years.MethodMultiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between childhood mental health problems, reported by child, parent and teacher, and physical disorders diagnosed by a physician in early adulthood.ResultsSignificant linkages emerged between childhood mental health problems and obesity, atopic eczema, epilepsy and asthma in early adulthood. Specifically, conduct problems in childhood were associated with a significantly increased likelihood of obesity and atopic eczema; emotional problems were associated with an increased likelihood of epilepsy and asthma; and depression symptoms at age 8 were associated with an increased risk of asthma in early adulthood.ConclusionsOur findings provide the first evidence of an association between mental health problems during childhood and increased risk of specific physical health problems, mainly asthma and obesity, during early adulthood, in a representative sample of males over time. These data suggest that behavioral and emotional problems in childhood may signal vulnerability to chronic physical health problems during early adulthood.

In order to understand the relationship between nonmedical prescriptiondrug use, gender, and crime, interviews were conducted with 40 incarceratedwomen who self-identified as nonmedical Rx users. Of the women weinterviewed, 70% were prescribed Rx drugs from their doctors to aid inrecovery from cesarean section childbirth deliveries, treat postpartumdepression, or for mental or physical health problems associated with childhoodabuse and victimization. These women subsequently discovered thatthese pills also helped them cope with the stresses of caretaking andkeeping the family together, particularly when experiencing intimate partnerviolence and prolonged poverty. Women were motivated to use Rxdrugs in order to be a “good” mother, as defined by medical and culturaldiscourse; however, despite positive intentions, prolonged nonmedical useoften hindered the realization of these ideals and ultimately resulted intheir criminalization, incarceration, and separation from their children.
