‘Imagine’: mapping sustainability indicators

This chapter discusses how a systems method for sharing perspectives on and then agreeing sustainability indicators was conceived and then applied in a wide variety of places. Central to this method's evolution were the intentions of its initial creators and the contributions of the different project collaborators and participants in the related workshops. Central to the method's effectiveness are the way two diagram types were used to visualise, and make more relevant to specified communities, indicators of environmental sustainability. The chapter is also another example of the interplay between method and visualisation, both of the method and within the method, and that it can be difficult to say which is the chicken and which is the egg. They are complementary parts of a holistic and ongoing process, particularly where the main objective is action to improve people's lives rather than research on people's lived experiences.

AbstractThis paper aims to mobilize the way we think and write about fat bodies while drawing on Jean-Luc Nancy’s philosophy of the body. I introduce Nancy’s approach to the body as an addition to contemporary new materialism. His philosophy, so I argue, offers a form of materialism that allows for a phenomenological exploration of the body. As such, it can help us to understand the lived experiences of fat embodiment. Additionally, Nancy’s idea of the body in terms of a “corpus”—a collection of pieces without a unity—together with his idea of corpus-writing—fragmentary writing, without head and tail—can help us to mobilize fixed meanings of fat. To apply Nancy’s conceptual frame to a concrete manifestation of fat embodiment, I provide a reading of Roxane Gay’s memoir Hunger (2017). In my analysis, I identify how the materiality of fat engenders the meaning of embodiment, and how it shapes how a fat body can and cannot be a body. Moreover, I propose that Gay’s writing style—hesitating and circling – involves an example of corpus-writing. The corpus of corpulence that Gay has created gives voice to the precariousness of a fat body's materialization.

Abstract: Curriculum is a component that takes an important role in the education system. Curriculum is formulated as the objectives that must be achieved so that the educational programs are able to run clearly and effectively. In addition, thecurriculum provides an understanding of learning that ought to be owned by each student. The development of Arabic curriculum is an ongoing process that should always be conducted continuously. If it is not, the curriculum has become obsoleteor outdated. Nevertheless, the curriculum development cannot be done with minimal effort or carelessly. The Arabic curriculum cannot be developed carelessly or improperly. In order toproduce a qualified Arabic curriculum, it requires some substantial foundations, for instance the religious foundation, in which the purposes of Arabic education cannot be separated from the goal of understanding the study of Islam with its various science, philosophical, juridical, or linguistics; the differences laid on the way or technique in teaching the language influenced by different views on seeing the nature of language, analyzing and describing the language, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and the foundation of science and technology. Hence, the curriculum should be able to accommodate and anticipate the pace of developments in science and technology.

Purpose Rapid changes in the environment escalate the requirement of environmental sustainability assessment within built environment. The purpose of this paper is to model the environmental sustainability of facilities management (FM) functions in apparel industry in Sri Lanka. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive literature review was carried out in order to identify the importance of sustainability assessment for FM, sustainable FM functions and their environmental sustainability indicators. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey was carried out to determine a relative weight of the sustainable FM functions and environmental sustainability indicators through the analytical hierarchy process analysis. Findings Energy management was identified as the most significant FM function in terms of environmental sustainability in apparel industry with a relative performance of 49.12 per cent. Subsequently, the functions of water management (29.39 per cent), maintenance management (11.98 per cent) and waste management (9.64 per cent) obtained the second, third and fourth ranks while asset management (7.85 per cent) was the function which had the least performance score. Relative weights for the environmental sustainability indicators were also determined. Research limitations/implications In respect of the apparel industry, the developed model can be utilised for assessing the environmental sustainability of FM in broader term. Originality/value No proper mechanism was found to assess the sustainability of FM in apparel sector since very fewer research studies were focussed on achieving environmental sustainability in different industries. Hence, the assessment of environmental sustainability of FM in apparel industry is an emerging necessity in the present day, which was addressed in this research.

In this article, I re-examine the question of the relationships between humans and non-humans, between subjects and objects. I analyse how relationships shape and define these – both themselves and their assemblage. While I concur with work in STS that has shown the ongoing process through which the embodied self is performed, I shift my attention to the nature of the entities resulting from this process: from adjustment to entanglements, and to analysing the different ways of ‘being entangled’. Some of these produce intimacy, others do not. This analysis is based on ethnographic fieldwork on the use of wheelchairs. I identify five relational modalities between the person and their wheelchair: intrusional, instrumental, functional, internalised and bound. Each defines the particular status of both the wheelchair and the person, and the way they live together. The analysis allows me to discuss the way different relationships lead to different descriptions and perceptions of the wheelchair and of the person, and has implications for both the analysis of ‘prosthesis’ and of ‘disability’.

The article focuses on the fleeting romantic encounters present in 19th century travel writing. Fantasy and reality remain distinct, shown through lived experiences and written traces: the traveller is often disappointed by these fleeting encounters. Travel writing of the Romantic period is therefore a space for tension between imaginary fantasy, in part shaped by a series of cultural precepts, and real lived experience. These texts thus pave the way for a process of demystification.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the use of sustainability indicators in Canadian corporate sustainability reports. The literature review highlights that few details are available on how indicators are currently used by corporations. To address this gap, this research focues on a content analysis of sustainability reports published by Canadian corporations in 2008. This thesis provides the first comprehensive review of indicators used in Canadian corporate sustainability reporting. Thematic categories of indicators, their use by industry sector and their associated targets are discussed. The use of existing sustainability indicators programs, such as composite indices, the GRI and Balanaced Scorecard, is also presented. The GRI indicators selected by Canadian corporations are also reviewed in detail. Finally, the way corporations report on the selection, development, and use of indicators int the management of sustainability issues is analysed.
