This chapter addresses the cultural politics, history and revival of Vietnamese court orchestras, which were first established at the beginning of the Nguyễn dynasty (1802–1945). Based on fieldwork in the city of Hue, it considers the decolonizing processes that have enabled Vietnamese court orchestras to take their place alongside other East Asian court orchestras as a display of national identity in the global community of nations. The metaphor of ‘orchestrating the nation’ is used to refer to the ways in which Vietnamese orchestras have been harnessed for sociopolitical ends in several historical periods. Court orchestras as heritage have recourse to a generic, precolonial past, yet they are not entirely uncoupled from local roots. Through a case-study of the revival of the Nam Giao Sacrifice, a ritual for ‘venerating heaven’, the chapter addresses the dynamics of interaction and exchange between staged performances of national heritage and local Buddhist and ancestor worship rituals. It argues that with growing concern about global climate change, the spiritual and ecological resonances of the Nam Giao Sacrifice have provided opportunities for the Party-state to reassert its position as the supreme guardian of the nation and its people.

This paper investigates Chinese-managed lottery businesses and their circulation from China into Korea. It focuses on the case of the business practices and marketing of the Cantonese company Tongshuntai, a foremost representative of Chinese capital in Korea. Through the case study of the lottery, East Asian trade networks can be understood as a kind of network circulating culture and information across the region. In 1899, the first modern Chinese lottery was issued in Shanghai. Cantonese merchants imported the Chinese lottery and broadly advertised lotteries in the newspaper in Seoul. Korea and China showed the same pattern in lottery business from the time of its rise to its demise. In 1909, there were strong regulations against lottery business both in China and Korea simultaneously. The force leading to the termination of lotteries in China was the reformative power that aimed to modernize China. In Korea, however, impetus to stop lotteries came from Korean nationalism as well as Japanese imperialist authority. (This article is in English).

Dengue virus (DENV) is one of the most widespread infectious diseases in the world, especially in the South East Asian regions. Transmitting the virus through mosquitoes, Dengue is an infectious viral borne disease. The virus sequences are assembled as series of nucleic acid, making the task of diagnosing virus sequences burdensome. Graphical representations are then proposed to represent Dengue virus to sustain the studies in virus sequences diagnosis. However, graphically representing sequences remained a crucified task especially for the incomplete genome sequences due to the missing nucleic acids. Although a number of studies provide methodologies on virus sequence visualization, in Dengue virus researches, those methodologies provide the visualization solely for complete genome sequences while neglecting the incomplete genome sequences. With the unaccommodating availabilities of research inputs, our study proposes a methodology for graphically representing the incomplete Dengue virus sequences, as well as complete virus sequences, by imputing in the incomplete part of a sequence with created reference sequences. The proposed methodology employs the use of database technology and majority voting technique to create reference sequences for each serotype of Dengue. Experimental results show that incomplete sequences are visualized realistically according to its respective serotype, thus providing flexibilities in Dengue virus researches to compensate incomplete sequences as inputs.
