This article introduces a special issue on arts-based engagement with migration, comprising articles, reflections, poems and images. The introductory article starts by exploring the ethical, political and empirical reasons for the increased use of arts-based methods in humanities and social sciences research in general, and in migration studies in particular. Next, it evaluates participatory methods, co-production and co-authorship as increasingly well-established practices across academia, the arts, activism and community work. It then considers how the outputs of such processes can be deployed to challenge dominant representations of migration and migrants. The authors reflect critically upon arts-based methodological practices and on the (limits to the) transformative potentials of using arts-based methods to engage creatively with migration. Sounding a cautionary note, they concede that even collaborative artistic expressions have limits in overcoming unequal power dynamics, conveying experiences of migration and effecting long-term change in a context in which discourse on migration is dominated by short-term political decision-making, and punitive policies force migrants into precarious forms of existence. While the prospect of influencing the political sphere might seem remote, they advocate for the role and power of the arts in instigating, shaping and leading change by inspiring people’s conscience and civic responsibility.

Societies frequently generate public infrastructure and institutional arrangements in order to mediate short-term environmental fluctuations. However, the social and ecological consequences of activities dealing with short-term disturbances may increase the vulnerability of the system to infrequent events or to long-term change in patterns of short-term variability. Exploring this possibility requires the study of long-term, transformational change. The archaeological record provides many examples of long-term change, such as the Hohokam who occupied the Phoenix Basin for over a thousand years and developed a complex irrigation society. In the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, the Hohokam society experienced reductions in complexity and scale possibly associated with regional climatic events. We apply a framework designed to explore robustness in coupled social-ecological systems to the Hohokam Cultural Sequence. Based on this analysis, a stylized formal model is developed to explore the possibility that the success of the Hohokam irrigation system and associated social structure may have increased their vulnerability to rare climactic shocks.

Abstract While previous idealized studies have demonstrated the importance of asymmetric atmospheric features in the intensification of a symmetric tropical cyclone vortex, the role of convectively generated asymmetries in creating changes in the azimuthally averaged cyclone is not well understood. In the present study the full-physics nonhydrostatic fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU–NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5) is used to evaluate the influence of such asymmetries. Rather than adding winds and temperatures in balance with a specified potential vorticity (PV) asymmetry, or temperature perturbations themselves, to a symmetric vortex as in previous studies, a diabatic heating asymmetry is imposed on a spunup model hurricane. The impact of short-duration eyewall-scale monochromatic azimuthal wavenumber diabatic heating on the short- and long-term evolution of the azimuthally averaged vortex is evaluated, and a tangential wind budget is made to determine the mechanisms responsible for the short-term impact. It is found that the small eddy kick created by the additional diabatic heating asymmetry leads to a substantially amplified long-term change in the azimuthally averaged vortex, with episodes of strong relative weakening and strengthening following at irregular intervals. This behavior is diabatically controlled. It is also found that the symmetric secondary circulation can be active in creating short-term changes in the vortex, and is not simply a passive response as in previous studies with dry physics. A central conclusion of the study is that the structure of the spunup hurricane vortex, in particular preexisting asymmetric features, can have a substantial influence on the character of the response to an additional diabatic heating asymmetry. The results also imply that a small change in the factors that control convective activity will have a substantial lasting consequence for the intensification of a hurricane.

The Arts Medicine Master Class case discussion on Myofascial Pain in a Guitarist (MPPA December 2005) reinforced some of the take-home points from an earlier article entitled An Innovative Patient-centered Approach to Common Playing-related Pain Conditions in Musicians (MPPA December 2004)2 and the more recent abstract presentation and workshop at the 2005 Aspen Conference: 1) myofascial trigger points are a common component of pain syndromes; 2) the short-term solution to myofascial pain is addressing trigger points, and the longterm solution is managing potentiators of pain (practice habits, posture, ligament laxity, psychological stress, etc.); and 3) self-care can contribute to the short-term and long-term solutions to myofascial pain.

Today's society is pleasure seeking. We expect to obtain pleasurable experiences fast and easily. We are used to hyper-palatable foods and drinks, and we can get pornography, games and gadgets whenever we want them. The problem: with this type of pleasure-maximizing choice behaviour we may be turning ourselves into mindless pleasure junkies, handing over our free will for the next dopamine shoot. Pleasure-only activities are fun. In excess, however, such activities might have negative effects on our biopsychological health: they provoke a change in the neural mechanisms underlying choice behaviour. Choice behaviour becomes biased towards short-term pleasure-maximizing goals, just as in the addicted brain (modulated by the amygdala, posterior ventromedial prefrontal cortex' (VMPFC), striatum, nucleus accumbens; ‘A-system’) and away from long-term prosperity and general well-being maximizing objectives (normally ensured by the insula, anterior VMPFC, hippocampus, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC); ‘I-system‘). This paper outlines, first, what ‘pleasure’ is and what ‘pleasure-only’ activities are (e.g. social media engagement, hyper-palatable eating). Second, an account is given of the type of action that might aid to maintain the neural systems underlying choice behaviour balanced. Finally, it is proposed that engagement with the arts might be an activity with the potential to foster healthy choice behaviour—and not be just for pleasure. The evidence in this rather new field of research is still piecemeal and inconclusive. This review aims to motivate targeted research in this domain.
