De ratione liberorum instituendorum litteris Graecis et Latinis by Pedro Perpinhão: on the creation of the Ratio Studiorum by the Society of Jesus

O presente artigo pretende abordar a importância que o apostolado social começou a ter para a Companhia de Jesus, especialmente a latino-americana, na conjuntura do Pós-2ª Guerra Mundial. Será analisada a criação dos Centros de Investigação e Ação Social (CIAS) como uma melhor forma de exercer este apostolado. O artigo será finalizado com a promulgação do decreto 4°, em 1975, pela Congregação Geral XXXII, quando a Companhia de Jesus oficializará a luta pela Justiça Social como uma missão de todos os jesuítas.ABSTRACT: This article intends to analyze the importance that the Social apostolate began to have for Society of Jesus, especially in Latin America, in the conjuncture after Second World War. It will be analyzed the creation of the Centers of Investigation and Social Action as a better form of exercising this apostolate. The article will be concluded with the promulgation of the ordinance 4°, in 1975, for the General Congregation XXXII, when Society of Jesus will make official the fight for the Social Justice as a mission of all the Jesuits.

This paper will discuss the history of the College of St Francis Xavier, the Welsh territorial district of the English Province of the Society of Jesus, and the history of Jesuit association with its headquarters, the Cwm farms at Llanrothal, near Hereford. One of 12 territorial divisions created by the Society of Jesus upon the creation of the English Province by 1623, the College of St Francis Xavier and its extensive surviving library, now housed at Hereford Cathedral, is being analysed as part of a three-year project funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council [AHRC]. The article argues for a re-evaluation of the Welsh District and its importance to the successes of the English Jesuit Province, concluding that, far from being a small, local missionary outpost of the English Province of the Society of Jesus, the College of St Francis Xavier, or the Welsh District, was in fact a diverse, vibrant and crucially important lynchpin in the successes of the Jesuits in England and Wales.

The Jubilee Ignatian Year began on 20 May 2021 and it will last until 31 July 2022. In the jubilee year of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) celebrates the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St. Ignatius Loyola and the 400th anniversary of his canonization. The starting date of the jubilee is related to the anniversary of the event that took place in Pamplona on 20 May 1521, when a cannonball injured Ignatius during a battle. It altered the course of his life, marking the beginning of his conversion, and leading to the founding of the Society of Jesus. The date of the end of the jubilee coincides with the liturgical commemoration of St. Ignatius of Loyola, that commemorates the day of his death. The conversion of Ignatius was associated primarily with a change in his lifestyle. Once a vain nobleman focused on world success, he has turned into an ascetic and inner-motivated man. Under the influence of these experiences, Ignatius and his Companions founded an order and initiated the creation of a “new” spirituality.

This chapter reconstructs the political constraints on the Jesuits who were circulating across Africa, America, and Asia from the mid-sixteenth through the twentieth century. The first missionaries acted under the royal patronages that the papacy had granted the crowns of Portugal and Spain over their oceanic empires. This legal and institutional framework, which had a deep influence on the Jesuit missions, was increasingly challenged by the papal claim to take back full control of the overseas church. The creation of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in 1622 led to an open competition with the Iberian royal patronages, bringing about serious conflict between the Jesuits and the newly appointed apostolic vicars. The chapter analyzes the backgrounds and effects of these global tensions, including their slow epilogue in the aftermath of the reconstitution of the Society of Jesus in 1814.

Abstract Tomasello offers a compelling account of the emergence of humans’ sense of obligation. We suggest that more needs to be said about the role of affect in the creation of obligations. We also argue that positive emotions such as gratitude evolved to encourage individuals to fulfill cooperative obligations without the negative quality that Tomasello proposes is inherent in obligations.
