The Rhytidoponera impressa group is revised on the basis of worker ant morphology, supplemented by information from ecological and genetic studies. Five species are recognized, all of which occur in mesic habitats along the east coast of Australia: chalybaea Emery (New South Wales, southern Queensland), confusa, sp. nov. (Victoria, New South Wales, southern Queensland) enigmatica sp. nov. (Sydney region, N.S.W.),impressa Mayr (Queensland) and purpurea Emery (north Queensland, New Guinea). R. purpurea is the most distinct morphologically. Of the remaining species, chalybaea and confusa are exceedingly similar and in some localities can be unequivocably distinguished only on the basis of electrophoretic (allozyme) differences. Biogeographical relationships of the impressa group are discussed in relation to past climatic and vegetational changes.

The genus Spilopyra Baly is revised, with five valid species, three new: S. safrina sp. nov., S. scratchley sp. nov., S. semiramis sp. nov., S. stirlingi Lea, 1914, S. sumptuosa Baly, 1860. Spilopyra stirlingi is a senior synonym of S. flavicornis Weise, 1923 (syn. nov.). Lectotypes are designated for S. stirlingi and S. sumptuosa. The genus may be considerably more diverse, as three of the species are known from just 7 specimens. Spilopyra species occur from northern New South Wales, Australia, to central New Guinea, and known hosts are Sapindaceae.

In this communication the author gives a description of a fossil humerus from the breccia cave of Wellington Valley, which repeats the characters of that bone in the existing monotrematous genus Echidna more closely than those of the same bone in any other known kind of mammal. The fossil, however, greatly exceeds in size that of the existing Australian species, Echidna hystrix , Cuv. The existence of, at least, two other kinds lately discovered living in New Guinea has been made known in memoirs by Professor Gervais and Mr. E. P. Ramsay, E .L .S.; these occupy, in respect of size, the interval between them and the Australian Ech. hystrix , but the subject of the present paper makes known the largest Monotreme hitherto discovered. Figures of the fossil in question, and of the corresponding bone of the smaller existing Australian kind, accompany the text. The fossil formed part of the series of remains obtained from the cave above cited, and was with them submitted to the author, who proposes to indicate the present acquisition by the name Echidna Ramsayi .

Eighteen herbicides or herbicide tankmixes were evaluated over 3 years (1987-89) for their control of 11 important summer-growing weeds on fallows in southern New South Wales and the Wimmera area of Victoria. Each of the weeds was effectively controlled by at least 1 herbicide. The tank-mixes of glyphosate plus metsulfuron (270 + 4.2 g a.i./ha) and glyphosate plus 2,4-D ester (270 + 320 g a.i./ha) were the most effective treatments, each giving an average of 68% control of all species. Hogweed (Polygolzunz avicu1ar.e L.), prickly paddy melon (Cucumis myriocarpris Naudin), spear thistle [Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Ten.] and skeleton weed (Chondrilla juncea L.) were the species most tolerant of these 2 tank-mixes. When these species were exluded, glyphosate plus metsulfuron and glyphosate plus 2,4-D ester gave an average of 90 and 88% control, respectively, of the remaining species [common heliotrope, Heliotropiunz europaeum L.; camel melon, Citrullus larzatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai var. lanatus; prickly lettuce, Lactuca serriola L.; sowthistle, Sonchus spp.; clammy goosefoot, Chenopodium pumilio R.Br.; caltrop, Tribulus terrestris L.; stink grass, Eragrostis ciliatiensis (All.) E. Mosher]. Hogweed was most effectively controlled by 2,4-D amine plus dicamba (750 + 100 g a.i./ha) or 2,4-D ester (800 g a.i./ha); prickly paddy melon by 2,4-D amine plus triclopyr (750 + 96 g a.i./ha); spear thistle by 2,4-D amine plus dicamba (750 + 100 g a.i./ha) or glyphosate plus clopyralid (270 + 60 g a.i./ha); and skeleton weed by 2,4-D amine plus clopyralid (750 + 60 g a.i./ha). A pot experiment confirmed field observations that, as common heliotrope ages, glyphosate and glyphosate plus metsulfuron become less effective for its control.

The Eastern Pygmy-possum Cercartetus nanu s is a small arboreal marsupial in the family Burramyidae that is threatened in parts of its range. Considered a generalist omnivore, its diet is known to include invertebrates, seeds, nectar and pollen. Tree sap has never before been recorded as a part of the diet of C. nanus . Here, we report on two observations of C. nanus feeding on eucalypt sap in south-eastern New South Wales.

From an examination of specimens of the scorpion Isometroides Keyserling collected in Western Australia, South Australia, and New South Wales and a study of the literature, it is concluded that two described species must be regarded as one. I. angusticaudus Keyserling is considered a synonym of I. vescus (Karsch). The genus represents a unique adaptive level, especially in its specialized feeding behaviour. It is distributed throughout the semi-arid inland. These facts make it difficult to find a geographically imposed isolation whereby the genus, once established, could have speciated. Field observations on this rare scorpion are presented. It is widespread, occurring in woodland and semi-arid country. In habit it is terrestrial, vagrant, and is specialized for feeding on burrowing spiders.
