The electron impact excitation of N2O was studied using the crossed electron-molecular beams method. Optical emission spectrum initiated by 50 eV electron impact was recorded within the range 200-700 nm. Main emission bands arise from excited ion state N2O+(A2Σ) and dissociative excitation into N2+(B2Σ+u). The rotationally un-resolved excitation-emission cross sections for selected ion transitions were scaled to absolute values and their dependence on electron energy was determined. Several of them were determined for the first time.

A detailed description is given of a technique in which emissions from H and H2 are used to calibrate an apparatus used for electron-impact emission cross-section measurements in the wavelength range 90–130 nm. Absolute emission cross sections have been measured at 200 eV electron-impact energy for the 120 nm N I line following dissociative excitation of N2 and for the Ar and Ar+ lines at 104.8, 106.7, 92.0, and 93.8 nm respectively. Good agreement with earlier works is obtained in the case of the N I line when earlier data are renormalized to take into account the recent revision of the cross section for production of Lyman α from H2. Measurements of the 104.8 and 106.7 nm lines suggest a 40% cascade component for the latter line at energies of 200 eV and above.

Calculations of energy levels and electron-impact excitation cross sections of the Auger autoionizing states 4p5nln'l'(nl= 4d, 5s, 5p; n'l'= 4d, 5s, 5p, 5d, 6s, 6p, 6d, 7s, 7p) of Sr ion were performed. A large-scale configuration interaction method on the basis of the solutions of Dirac–Fock–Slater equations was used. The cross sections of electron-impact simultaneous ionization and excitation, and Auger decay of the electron-impact excited states of Sr atom to the 4p-core excited autoionizing states of Sr ion were calculated for the first time and used to estimate the intensity of ejected electron lines. Tentative identification of the Auger electron lines of Sr ion registered in a number of experiments is presented.
