We report the results of the measurements and calculations of the absolute differential elastic electron scattering cross-sections (DCSs) from sevoflurane molecule (C4H3F7O). The experimental absolute DCSs for elastic electron scattering were obtained for the incident electron energies from 50 eV to 300 eV, and for scattering angles from 25° to 125° using a crossed electron/target beams setup and the relative flow technique for calibration to the absolute scale. For the calculations, we have used the IAM-SCAR+I method (independent atom model (IAM) applying the screened additivity rule (SCAR) with interference terms included (I)). The molecular cross-sections were obtained from the atomic data by using the SCAR procedure, incorporating interference term corrections, by summing all the relevant atomic amplitudes, including the phase coefficients. In this approach, we obtain the molecular differential scattering cross-section (DCS), which, integrated over the scattered electron angular range, gives the integral scattering cross-section (ICS). Calculated cross-sections agree very well with experimental results, in the whole energy and angular range.

AbstractThe paper provides an analysis of Giuseppe Vitali’s contributions to differential geometry over the period 1923–1932. In particular, Vitali’s ambitious project of elaborating a generalized differential calculus regarded as an extension of Ricci-Curbastro tensor calculus is discussed in some detail. Special attention is paid to describing the origin of Vitali’s calculus within the context of Ernesto Pascal’s theory of forms and to providing an analysis of the process leading to a fully general notion of covariant derivative. Finally, the reception of Vitali’s theory is discussed in light of Enea Bortolotti and Enrico Bompiani’s subsequent works.

Absolute differential cross section measurements of the $^{12}C(d,p_{1,2,3})^{13}C$ reaction were performed in the projectile energy region Ed,lab = 900-2000 keV (in steps of 25 keV) and for detector angles between 145° and 170° (in steps of 5°) using as targets 99.9% purity self-supported natural carbon (98.9% 12C – 1.1% 13C) foils of nominal thickness ca. 1×10$^{18}$ at/cm2. The overall error in the absolute differential cross section measurements varied between ~8-30%. The results, presented in both graphical and tabular form, are compared with already published data and an attempt is made to explain the occurring differences. The strong influence of the resonance mechanism is presented and discussed.

In many cases of sexual assault, traces of semen are left behind on the victim’s body, clothes and the area in which the assault has taken place. The positive identification of semen is instrumental in supporting such cases. There are several methods of forensic examination of semen reported in literature, but the presence of blood complicates the identification of semen stains. This paper presents one such case study where the presence of blood makes DNA profiling more challenging as the PCR amplification becomes complicated, and the absolute differential isolation is the only way to get the clear profile using identifiler kits.
