Aluminium alloys are extensively used nowadays in various manufacturing industries due to its special properties and high strength. In this study, AA6082 aluminium alloy is taken into consideration by studying the machinability properties using the abrasive water jet cutting process. RSM technique is used for conducting the experiments by varying the input factors such as stand-off distance, abrasive feed and nozzle transverse speed. The effect of hardness and surface roughness is investigated. The correlation between the input parameters and the corresponding output was tested by analysis of variance to check the 95% confidence level.

The problem of cutting difficult-to-machine materials used in the aerospace industry, aircraft industry, and automobile industry, led to the development and application one of today?s most attractive technology for contour cutting - abrasive water jet cutting. For the efficient use of abrasive water jet cutting, it is of great importance to analyze the impact of process parameters on performance indicators, such as cutting quality, productivity, and costs. But also, from the energy utilization point of view, it is very important to analyze the impact of these parameters on the specific cutting energy which represents the amount of energy spent on the removal of material in the unit time. Having this in mind, this study presents the experimental results of abrasive water jet cutting of aluminum alloy with the aim of creating a mathematical model for estimating specific cutting energy as an important indicator of the degree of utilization of the available energy in the cutting process. The mathematical model of the specific cutting energy is explicitly represented as a non-linear function of the process parameters, obtained by the artificial neural network.

Modern materials cutting operations are traditionally part of the research priorities and also in the production activities of ISIM Timișoara. In the last decade, within the institute, a special emphasis was placed on the development of the abrasive water jet cutting process as well as on implementing the research results obtained into industrial activities. The paper presents own achievements and contributions of ISIM to the development of the abrasive water jet cutting process in the following directions: cutting technologies for materials with different characteristics, innovative new patentable solutions regarding the cutting process respectively important modules in the composition of the water jet cutting equipment, ways to recycle used abrasive waste, solutions to streamline the process. The proposed solutions have been verified with good results in industrial applications, or have been proposed for analysis and development together with specialists in the field from important research units.
