Abstract Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma that most often occurs in the upper aerodigestive tract. This type of tumor has an aggressive behavior and usually is diagnosed in the advances stage. The diagnosis of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is rather difficult and is based on histopathological and immunohistochemical examination. We report a case of laryngeal basaloid squamous cell carcinoma diagnosed by histological examination of a excisional biopsy specimen. The patient was a 57-year old female with a 3 months-history hoarseness and odynophagia. The histopathological aspect was strongly suggestive for BSCC. Immunohistochemical examination has been done using a panel of biomarkers in order to confirm our initial diagnose. The tumors nests were positive for squamous epithelial marker citokeratin 34βE12, AE1/AE3, CK 19 and also p53 and negative for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), vimentin and for neuroendocrine markers. Ki- 67 marker was positive in 60% of the tumoral cells. Based on histopathological and immunohistochemical findings, the tumor was diagnosed as basaloid squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is a recently described, distinct variant of squamous cell carcinoma that arises predominantly in the upper aerodigestive tract. Herein we report a case of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma arising in the urinary bladder. The patient was a 60-year-old woman who experienced intractable urinary tract infections following multiple corrective surgical procedures for incontinence. Biopsies of cystoscopically evident flat lesions were performed, and the patient subsequently underwent a radical cystectomy. Histologically, the lesions consisted of nests of basaloid cells with brisk mitotic activity, areas of squamous differentiation along with areas of squamous metaplasia, and squamous cell carcinoma in situ. These features are similar to those of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma described elsewhere in the body. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma in the urinary bladder.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is a variant of squamous cell carcinoma. This malignancy has a predilection for the upper aerodigestive tract, although it has been found in multiple other sites. The tumor is highly aggressive biologically, and the overall prognosis is poor despite intensive treatment. We describe a case of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx that metastasized to the spine.

Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma (BSCC) is a rare and aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), with a predilection for the upper aerodigestive tract, the palate being a very rare site of development. It is constituted by a basaloid and a squamous components in variable proportions, however, the histopathological characteristics of the BSCC overlap with other neoplasias. Diagnosis with various immunohistochemical markers such as p63, Ki67, p16, and AE1 / AE3 cytokeratins have become a necessity for the specialist. The objective of this study is to present a case of BSCC in soft palate and to show the importance of the support in the immunohistochemistry for an early histopathological diagnosis. A review of the literature on this pathology is also presented.
