This study assessed the effects of a wrist rest for VDT operators based on an experimental investigation. Muscular strain associated with the working posture was measured continuously via electromyographic activities (EA) of 8 muscle groups which were involved in the working tasks. The electromyographic measurements yielded a clear systematical effect of the wrist rest while entering text using the 10-finger touch system. Values of the EA, as an indicator of physiological cost were essentially lower with the wrist rest. Working without the wrist rest is at least two times more strenuous than working with it. The differences are statistically highly significant. Less positive and less consistent results were found while working on the prefixed mouse pad of the wrist rest. Considering the influence of the working aid on entering text, the results of the subjective assessment after the tests corresponded well with the objectively measured physiological data. Whereas the working aid for entering text was assessed quite positively overall, the integrated mouse pad earned a clearly negative rating.

In this study, a novel technology is reported to prepare a piezoresistive polyurethane-silicone rubber nanocomposite. Polyurethane (PU) foam was loaded with a nitrogen-doped bamboo-shaped carbon nanotube (N-BCNT) by using dip-coating, and then, impregnated with silicone rubber. PU was used as a supporting substrate for N-BCNT, while silicone rubber was applied to fill the pores of the foam to improve recoverability, compressive strength, and durability. The composite displays good electrical conductivity, short response time, and excellent repeatability. The resistance was reduced when the amount of N-BCNT (0.43 wt %) was increased due to the expanded conductive path for electron transport. The piezoresistive composite has been successfully tested in many applications, such as human monitoring and finger touch detection.

There has been a conscious shift towards developing increasingly inclusive applications. However, despite this fact, most research has focused on supporting those with visual or hearing impairments and less attention has been paid to cognitive impairments. The purpose of this study is to analyse touch gestures used for touchscreens and identify which gestures are suitable for individuals living with Down syndrome (DS) or other forms of physical or cognitive impairments. With this information, app developers can satisfy Design for All (DfA) requirements by selecting adequate gestures from existing lists of gesture sets. Twenty touch gestures were defined for this study and a sample group containing eighteen individuals with Down syndrome was used. A tool was developed to measure the performance of touch gestures and participants were asked to perform simple tasks that involved the repeated use of these twenty gestures. Three variables are analysed to establish whether they influence the success rates or completion times of gestures, as they could have a collateral effect on the skill with which gestures are performed. These variables are Gender, Type of Down syndrome, and Socioeconomic Status. Analysis reveals that significant difference is present when a pairwise comparison is performed, meaning individuals with DS cannot perform all gestures with the same ease. The variables Gender and Socioeconomic Status do not influence success rates or completion times, but Type of DS does.

ABSTRACTA ferroelectric nanogenerator without any electric poling treatment has been realized by incorporation of ytterbium (Yb) salt incorporated porous PVDF composite film. The composite film compose of electroactive β- and γ-phases, demonstrates higher dielectric and ferroelectric polarization responses than pure PVDF film. The 3 V of open circuit voltage with 0.47 µW/cm2 power density was generated by the nanogenerator upon single finger touch. It can also operate capacitor and light emitting diode without any subsidiary batteries.
