Abstract Halogen radioisotopes have a variety of physical half-lives which are suitable for probing a wide variety of pharmacokinetic processes. Compared with other radiohalogens, relatively little work has been done with radiochlorine. However, high specific activity radioisotopes of chlorine are available from low energy cyclotron production in quantities suitable for positron emission tomography (PET) and fundamental research. In particular, the sole radioisotope of chlorine which may be used for PET imaging, 34mCl, has achieved a state of development that permits imaging in clinical settings though sparse research effort has been focused on this isotope over the last 40 years. Additionally, the other longer-lived radioisotopes of chlorine will likely continue to show utility for more traditional radiotracer studies and chemistry development.

Studies on double beta decay processes in 106Cd were performed by using a cadmium tungstate scintillator enriched in 106Cd at 66% (106CdWO4) with two CdWO4 scintillation counters (with natural Cd composition). No effect was observed in the data that accumulated over 26,033 h. New improved half-life limits were set on the different channels and modes of the 106Cd double beta decay at level of limT1/2∼1020−1022 yr. The limit for the two neutrino electron capture with positron emission in 106Cd to the ground state of 106Pd, T1/22νECβ+≥2.1×1021 yr, was set by the analysis of the 106CdWO4 data in coincidence with the energy release 511 keV in both CdWO4 counters. The sensitivity approaches the theoretical predictions for the decay half-life that are in the range T1/2∼1021−1022 yr. The resonant neutrinoless double-electron capture to the 2718 keV excited state of 106Pd is restricted at the level of T1/20ν2K≥2.9×1021 yr.

We have performed a new determination of the half-life of 41Ca by measuring the specific activity of an enriched Ca material with known 41Ca abundance. We measured the activity via the 3.3-keV X-rays emitted in the electron capture decay of 41Ca, and the 41Ca abundance was measured by low-energy mass spectrometry. The result, t1/2 = (1.01 ± 0.10) × 105 yr, agrees with the recent ‘geological’ half-life of Klein et al., (1991), t1/2 = (1.03 ± 0.07) × 105 yr, and with the corrected value of Mabuchi et al. (1974), t1/2 = (1.13 ± 0.12) × 105 yr. We recommend the weighted mean of these three measurements, t1/2 = (1.04 ± 0.05) × 105 yr, as the most probable half-life of 41Ca. We also discuss the situation of the radioisotopes, 32Si, 44Ti, 79Se and 126Sn, whose half-lives, though still uncertain, are potentially interesting for future AMS studies and other applications.
