<p>Colombia es el país neotropical con mayor diversidad de Gesneriaceae. Sin embargo hay vacíos en el conocimiento de los patrones de distribución y ecología de esta familia, debido a su complejidad taxonómica. En este trabajo se presenta una lista de Gesneriaceae para el departamento del Quindío con datos de hábitat y distribución altitudinal. Se revisaron las colecciones del COL y HUQ y se realizó trabajo de campo entre 2009 y 2014 en 70 localidades del Quindío. Se encontraron 43 especies y 11 géneros, con una mayor representación de <em>Columnea, Besleria </em>y<em> Kohleria</em>; nueve especies fueron nuevos registros para el Quindío, tres fueron endémicas y cinco especies nuevas para la ciencia. La mayor riqueza se encontró en los bosques montanos entre 1800 m y 2400 m, principalmente en interior bosque y cañadas. Los resultados de este trabajo constituyen una línea base para dirigir la investigación en ecología, conservación y su potencial ornamental de las gesneriáceas presentes en el Quindío.</p><p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p>Colombia is the most diverse Neotropical country of Gesneriaceae. Nevertheless, there are gaps in knowledge of the distribution patterns and ecology of this family because of their taxonomic complexity. A list of the Gesneriaceae of the Quindío department with data for habitat and altitudinal distribution is presented in this paper. The herbarium collections of COL and HUQ were reviewed and fieldwork was carried out between 2009 and 2014 in 70 localities of Quindío. Forty three species and 11 genera were found, with a larger representation of <em>Columnea</em>, <em>Besleria</em> and <em>Kohleria </em>genera; nine species were new records for the Quindío; three were endemic and five species are new to science. The greatest richness was found in the montane forest between 1800 m and 2400 m, mainly in forested areas and streams. The results of this work constitute a baseline to conduct research in ecology, conservation and ornamental potential of Gesneriaceae occurring in Quindío.</p>

This study provides the first comprehensive checklist and analysis of the species of Fabaceae from Nigeria, based on over 5000 herbarium collections and the completed "Flora of West Tropical Africa (FWTA)". We report 552 taxa, belonging to 540 species in 155 genera from six subfamilies, with an outstanding number of taxa (36) representing new records for the country. We mapped the distribution of the species using their occurrence records obtained from GBIF and our own field and herbarium collections. The majority of taxa (43%) was distributed in the savanna vegetation of northern Nigeria, followed by the adjacent tropical forest formations of southern Nigeria (34%), and they were found in highest percentages in Papilionoideae (67%) and Caesalpinioideae (19%), followed by Deterioideae (11%), Cercidoideae and Dialioideae (6% each) and Duparquetioideae (<1%) subfamilies. Endemic and native taxa were 5 and 73% respectively. The most prevalent subfamilies in terms of endemicity were Papilionoideae (14 species), and Deterioideae (11 species), while the most prevalent genera were Indigofera (three species), Dalbergia (three species), Brachystegia (two species) and Cryptosepalum (two species). We found that the majority (37%) of the species were phanerophytes and the fewest were cryptophytes (0.7%). These results suggest that Nigeria has a considerable diversity of legumes, with a predominant distribution in the savanna, probably due to the demanding environmental conditions limiting the dispersion of generalists or invasive species. The diversity of growth forms and distribution patterns of Nigerian legumes could be useful in screening these plants for other potential uses, such as conservation planning or specific agricultural purposes. We recommend a similar study on other families as this will help locals, natural scientists, governments and conservation bodies to recognise and appreciate the flora of the country.

Damacornu gen. nov. (type species: D. transversum gen. et sp. nov.), Geotypodon papei sp. nov. and Spinotarsus fortehamatus sp. nov. are described, and Helicochetus dimidiatus (Peters, 1855), H. mutaba Kraus, 1960 and Hoffmanides dissutus (Hoffman, 1963) are recorded from the Udzungwa Mts, Tanzania. A complete overview of the 39 odontopygid species now known from the Udzungwa Mts is given, including notes on endemism, biogeographical relationships and altitudinal distribution patterns.

Chandragiri Mountain forest in Kathmandu borders Makwanpur district to the west was least known for bryophytes till this study was conducted. This mountain forest with varying elevation ranges from 1365 to 2300 m offered different habitat types for diverse bryofloral species which included 58 species of 39 genera categorized under 27 families and nine orders. Of the recorded species 18 species were rare and five new records to country’s list. Sauteria spongiosa (Kashyap) S. Hatt., a rare moss species was not recorded in this study though was reported for the fi rst time at 2250 m of this mountain in 1982. The current study reports five new localities of the four-eyed frog Pleurodema thaul (Lesson, 1827) in the extreme north of its distribution (27° to 30° S) in the desertic and semidesertic ravines of Chile, including an increase in its altitudinal range up to 3125 m.

Serra da Pedra Branca (SPB) is a mountain range located in the Southwestern portion of the state Minas Gerais, in the municipality of Caldas (21°58′-21°55′S, 46°24′-46°22′W). It is a striking feature in the landscape, between 1100 and 1780 m.s.m., in a region that is part of the Atlantic Forest Domain and is considered as a priority area for conservation of the flora in Minas Gerais state. The vegetation is composed by a mosaic of “campo de altitude” (which occupy the greatest extension in the area), Seasonal Semidecidual Montane Forest, Dense Ombrophilous High-Montane Forest and Mixed Ombrophilous Forest. The aims of this study was the elaboration of a floristic survey of SPB added to the specimens collected by Anders Fredrik Regnell in the nineteenth century in Caldas and to analyze its floristic similarity with altitude areas of the Southeastern Region of Brazil. There were recorded 502 vascular plant species, distributed in 274 genera and 100 families. The majority of recorded species present herbaceous habit, terricolous, saxicolous and/or rupicolous (representing around 58% of recorded species), predominantly occurring in the “campo de altitude” (ca. 46%). The richest families were Polypodiaceae (20 spp.) and Dryopteridaceae (10 spp.) among the ferns, and Orchidaceae (56 spp.), Asteraceae (27 spp.) and Fabaceae (26 spp.) among the angiosperms. Just one species of gymnosperm was recorded, Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze (Araucariaceae). Five new records were made for the Minas Gerais flora, 13 species are cited as threatened with extinction in the state and at least six are endemic to SPB. Amongst 127 species collected in XIX century in the region, only 29 collected again, while 375 new records were made for SPB. The analysis of floristic similarity performed between the flora of SPB and other altitude areas of Southeastern Region revealed isolation of SPB in relation to other areas, highlighting its floristic peculiarity, which can probably be explained by its location in a distinct hydrographic basin. The vegetation of the SPB must be considered as endangered since the presence of endemic species and/or threatened species, associated with local environmental conditions suffering accelerated rate of destruction, highlight the need for urgent actions to preserve local biodiversity.

Restinga forests are plant formations that occur on plains of quaternary sandy deposits along the Brazilian coast. Despite historical reduction of the Restinga forests, little effort has been made to know the butterfly fauna of these areas. This paper is an important contribution to the butterfly’s knowledge, being the second inventory in the Restinga forest of northeastern Brazil. The survey was conducted in the Restinga de Cabedelo National Forest (FLONA de Cabedelo, following the Portuguese abbreviation) and aimed to provide preliminary information on the butterflies richness in this region. A total of 89 butterfly species and 1,503 individuals were recorded at FLONA de Cabedelo. Hesperiidae was the richest family (34 species), followed by Nymphalidae (33) Pieridae (eight), Lycaenidae (seven), Riodinidae (five), and Papilionidae (two). In general, the butterfly fauna of the FLONA de Cabedelo is dominated by species widely distributed and commonly found in open or forested areas in Brazil. Five species are new records in Paraíba state: Calydna sturnula (Geyer), Theope foliorum (Bates), Cogia hassan (Butler), Vehilius inca (Scudder), and Chiothion asychis (Stoll). We suggest carrying out monthly samplings which will certainly increase the list of species herein presented.

Abstract The Cautín River is closely related with the economic development of Temuco city, (38°S; Chile). Existing knowledge of the Cautín River is limited to information about its biological characteristics as a reference for the evaluation and assessment of water quality. The object of this study was to develop taxonomic characterisation of the benthic macroinvertebrates along the main course of the Cautín River, and to study the community structure using correlation analysis between community parameters. To carry out this research, the macroinvertebrate community was studied in 10 sampling sites distributed along the main course of the river. The samples were taken in summer (1997 and 2000), when optimal hydrological conditions existed. Analysis of the samples showed that the benthic fauna was composed of 56 taxa, the dominant group being insects with 48 taxa. Three main sectors were recognised in the course of the Cautín River: high, middle and low. Each sector has restricted-distribution species, while other species are widely distributed along the river. These distribution patterns seem to be influenced by dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, altitudinal distribution and anthropo-cultural activity, present at every sampling site. Finally, this research provides a first approach to the biology of the Cautín River. Further studies could be planned on the basis of this knowledge to investigate water quality indicators based on macroinvertebrate communities.

The moss flora of Zambales Mountain Range of Luzon Island, Philippines is updated based on recent and herbarium collections and is found to consist of 268 species in 126 genera.  The Zambales collections yield Ectropothecium sp., a probable new species and six new records for the Philippine moss flora: Ectropothecium callichroides, E. filicaule, E. planulum, Neckeromnion calcutense, Papillidiopsis stissophylla, and Splachnobryum oorschotii. Likewise, Gammiella tonkinensis, Gymnostomiella longinervis, Leucobryum arfakianum, and Rhaphidostichum bunodicarpum are new records for Luzon Island. Additionally, the affinity of mosses in Zambales Mountain Range to other known floristically distinct areas and islands in the archipelago is discussed.
