Plankton samples obtained from the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, an extensive estuarine system in northern Colombia, yielded adult male and female specimens of an undescribed halicyclopine cyclopid copepod of the genus Halicyclops. Cyclopid copepods are frequently found in freshwater and transitional habitats. Members of the subfamily Halicyclopinae are chiefly brackish water forms with a few freshwater species. The new species described herein is assignable to the group of species “F” of Halicyclops (sensu Pesce, 2018) with a 2333 exopodal spine formula. Currently, this group contains five species and one subspecies. Halicyclops gutierrezi sp. n. can be distinguished from its known congeners by the absence of an anal operculum, the relative length of setae of the female and male P5, the relative length of the inner setae of P4EXP3, and details of the male antennule. This is the fifth species of Halicyclops recorded from Colombia and the first one of Halicyclops group “F” described from the Caribbean region. With the addition of H. gutierrezi sp. n., the number of species of the genus known from the Neotropics increased to 20. A key to the species of the genus recorded in Colombia is also provided.

Eucyclops torresphilipi sp. nov. is described from samples collected in the state of Chiapas, on the southeastern Pacific coast of Mexico. It belongs to a group of species similar to the presumably cosmopolitan E. agilis (Koch, 1838). The new species is closest to the South American E. delachauxi (Kiefer, 1925); it can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters that include a fifth leg with a particularly slender inner spiniform seta that is as long as the outer seta, the caudal rami has spinules covering up to of the outer margin, caudal rami over 4 times longer than wide, the relative length of the dorsal seta, and the proportion of the terminal spines of the third exopodal segment of the fourth legs. Only nine other nominal species of Eucyclops have been recorded in Mexico; nearly half of them are known also from South America. The new species seems to have a restricted distributional range; however, it could be present also in Guatemala. Its morphological affinity with South American forms confirms the influence of the South American cyclopoid fauna in Mexico. A key for the identification of the species of Eucyclops recorded in Mexico is included.

A new species of Helicteres from the Dominican Republic is described and illustrated; increasing the number of species occurring in the Caribbean to five. The new species, H. pegueroi, can be distinguished from H. jamaicensis and H. semitriloba by its habit and calyx and corolla colour, i.e. it is a shrub with red calyces and corollas; its pseudoactinomorphic flower due to a slight curvature at the base of the androgynophore; and its densely woolly, globose fruit. An artificial, dichotomous key is provided to distinguish the new species from the other species of the Caribbean region and Mexico.

Only three species of Trichomyia Haliday have been recorded in Mexico. Trichomyia cirrata Coquillett, 1902, is recognized by its female characteristics, T. fairchildi Vargas and D az-N jera, 1953, was described based only on the wing and must be considered as species inquirenda, and T. maldonadoi (Vargas, 1953), which was described based on one female specimen. Specimens of Trichomyia collected in the states of Campeche, Yucatan, and Oaxaca, Mexico, allowed this female to be associated with the male of T. brevitarsa (Rapp, 1945), thus providing a first report of this species in Mexico. Consequently, T. maldonadoi is proposed as a synonym of T. brevitarsa. Additionally, a new species of Trichomyia from the state of Veracruz, Mexico, is described and illustrated based on the male and female characteristics.
