A new species of Cletocamptus closely related to C. helobius was found in sediment samples taken from a polluted estuarine system in north-western Mexico. The genus Cletocamptus was relegated to species incertae sedis in 1986, and this finding prompted us to evaluate the current taxonomic position of the genus within the Canthocamptidae. The latter has been subdivided in several, seemingly unnatural subfamilies in the past to better understand the relationships between its constituent taxa. In this study we propose a new subfamily, the Cletocamptinaesubfam. nov. for Amphibiperita, Cletocamptus, and Cletocamptoides gen. nov., defined by the synapomorphic subdistal ventral spinules on the rostrum. The genus Cletocamptoidesgen. nov. is proposed for C. helobius, C. merbokensis, and C. biushelosp. nov., and is supported by the ‘cletodid’ shape of the body and the reduced one-segmented endopod of the fourth swimming leg. Cletocamptus includes all the other species with long slender spinules on the posterior margin of prosomites and with the sexually modified inner spine on the second endopodal segment of the second swimming leg in the males. Amphibiperita retained the primitive female fifth leg with exopod and baseoendopod separated, and the primitive prehensile endopod of the first leg, but is defined by the loss of the antennary exopod. Other (syn)apomorphies are given, and the evolution of the mandibular palp is briefly discussed. Additionally, a diagnosis for the new subfamily, Cletocamptinaesubfam. nov., an amended narrower diagnosis for Cletocamptus, the diagnosis for Cletocamptoidesgen. nov., and a phylogenetic analysis supporting the proposal of these new taxa, are given.

Distributions of Coomassie Blue stainable particles (CSP), the sources and transports, as well as their implications for nitrogen biogeochemical cycles in the Pearl River estuary (PRE) were investigated during two cruises in August 2016 and January 2017. CSPcolor concentrations (CSP concentration determined spectrophotometrically) were 73.7–685.3 μg BSA eq L–1 [μg Bovine serum albumin (BSA) equivalent liter–1] in August 2016 and 100.6–396.4 μg BSA eq L–1 in January 2017, respectively. CSP concentrations were high in low-salinity waters (<5), and declined from the river to the middle estuary by 80% in the wet season and 55.6% in the dry season, respectively, then increased again in the lower estuary due to high primary production. CSP concentrations were mainly associated with chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration except for the turbid mixing zone, suggesting that autochthonous phytoplankton production served as the primary source of CSP in the PRE. The concentrations of nitrogen (N) as CSP in the PRE were comparable to the nitrogen content of particulate hydrolysable amino acids (PHAA). Pictures of CSP taken by microscopy and the correlation between composition of PHAA and the ratio of Chl a/CSPcolor showed that CSP were relatively degraded due to delivery of old terrestrial protein to river section and extensive microbial degradation during mixing at the upper and middle parts of the estuary, whereas CSP in lower estuary appeared to be more labile due to higher fresh algal production. The contribution of CSP nitrogen (CSP-N) to the particulate nitrogen (PN) pool was 34.98% in summer and 30.8% in winter. The conservative estimate of CSP-N input flux in the Pearl River Delta was about 6 × 106 mol N d–1. These results suggested that CSP was a significant pool of organic nitrogen in the PRE. The study of CSP composition in terms of nitrogen provides new insight into the roles of CSP on nitrogen biogeochemical processes in the turbid and productive estuarine system.

This report documents a numerical modeling investigation for dredged material from nearshore borrow areas and placed on Folly Beach adjacent to Stono Inlet, South Carolina. Historical and newly collected wave and hydrodynamic data around the inlet were assembled and analyzed. The datasets were used to calibrate and validate a coastal wave, hydrodynamic and sediment transport model, the Coastal Modeling System. Sediment transport and morphology changes within and around the immediate vicinity of the Stono Inlet estuarine system, including sand borrow areas and nearshore Folly Beach area, were evaluated. Results of model simulations show that sand removal in the borrow areas increases material backfilling, which is more significant in the nearshore than the offshore borrow areas. In the nearshore Folly Beach area, the dominant flow and sediment transport directions are from the northeast to the southwest. Net sediment gain occurs in the central and southwest sections while net sediment loss occurs in the northeast section of Folly Island. A storm and a 1-year simulation developed for the study produce a similar pattern of morphology changes, and erosion and deposition around the borrow areas and the nearshore Folly Beach area.

The wide spatial and temporal coverage of remotely sensing images is an essential asset to analyze the morphological behaviour of fast-changing coastal environments such as estuarine systems. This paper investigates the reliability of intertidal topography mapping around the Authie Bay, a macrotidal estuarine system located on the northern coast of France. A Satellite-Derived Topography technique is developed by relating the green band reflectance of Sentinel-2 images to rapid variations in topography. This method is well suited to small sedimentary structures of the coastal zone with a 0.30 to 0.35 m height accuracy of the constructed Digital Elevation Model (DEM). For the more complex estuarine configuration, the waterline method was applied and resulted in the construction of DEMs with a height accuracy of 0.35 to 0.38 m. Video animations and records of Authie meander positions along transects are created from Sentinel-2 and Landsat satellite archives (1984–2020). These materials allow to highlight a sedimentation phase at the east side of the spit since 2015. It constrains the main channel towards the eastern bank, thus promoting coastal erosion. The monitoring of a severe erosion phase throughout 2019 shows a 130 m retreat of the coastline. Topographic map differentiation led to the detection of a sedimentation anomaly upstream of the bay, probably linked to this erosion event.
