The aim of this study was to establish elements to understand the consumers reasons to increase the quantities of fresh vegetables consumed in the Caribbean Region of Colombia. With information from 308 surveys applied randomly in seven cities of the Caribbean Region and using a structured survey that included variables such as age, family composition, prices, income, a Logit econometric model was formulated. Furthermore, with the contingent valuation method, parameters were estimated using maximum likelihood; moreover, the reasons that explain the possibility that families increase vegetable consumption were identified. Results allow us to appreciate first that 53 % of the surveyed respondents would be willing to increase consumption. The variable that explains mostly an increase in consumption is scholarship with a positive value of 0.7667 with a direct relationship, with a significance of 0.005, i.e. with a higher the level of education, the probability of increasing consumption is also higher, presumably because the consumer has more information about the properties and advantages that vegetables have for health. These decisions are also influenced by vegetable prices and consumer age, but in an inverse relationship, i.e. at a higher price and age, less possibility of increasing consumption was observed. On the other hand, variables such as number of family members have a direct influence on decisions to increase vegetable consumption.

This study aims to analyze the value of Willingnes to Pay (WTP) and the factors that influence the value of WTP to waste management retribution into compost. This research was conducted in Cileunyi District, Bandung Regency, West Java Province. Cileunyi District is estimated to produce garbage reaching 330 m3 per day or 115 tons/ day. The number of samples is 96 families, calculated by the Frank Lynch formula. To find out the factors that influence WTP, use the correlation test, ANOVA test and multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS 24 software. Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) is used to analize the value of Community’s  Willingness to Pay the retribution.  The results of the study obtained as follows: age, level of education, income and number of family members together (simultaneous) affect the Willingness to Pay (WTP),  the influence of all factors is 39.9%,  the number of family members does not significantly affect the WTP,  the average value of waste retribution paid is Rp. 10,208,33 and the average value of WTP for waste management into compost or recycled is Rp. 20,572.92.

Abstract The economic valuation of ecosystem services contributes to their conservation and guarantees the proper use of resources. In this sense, ecotourism represents a reliable alternative to achieve sustainable rural development. However, it is essential to conduct studies on tourists' economic perceptions to promote and conserve the natural resources linked to this activity. The present work is based on the contingent valuation method to estimate the willingness to pay for the conservation of the environmental services that the waterhole of Sambulá, in the Municipality of Pebá of the state of Yucatán, Mexico, provides. The study is quantitative and cross-sectional since the ordered probit econometric model was used to analyze the data. The results show that the variables of local and national origin and the number of activities carried out in the tourist center indicate positively in the increase of probabilities of having higher amounts of money for conservation. In contrast, the age and the perception of the cleanliness of the place have a negative impact.

This study evaluates the adoption of biological control of the Diaphorina citri and the citrus growers’ willingness to pay for biopesticides. The citrus greening continues to spread over Brazilian orchards, reaching 17.89% of all citrus trees in 2015. Utilizing data from a survey with decision-making agents from the sector, this paper used a logit model to obtain the determinants and a contingent valuation method to elicit growers’ willingness to pay for a biopesticide. Results showed high acceptability of growers to the biocontrol. Important factors regarding its adoption included experience in growing citrus, a high level of education and dependence on citrus production. Producers from São Paulo’s southern region paid the highest value for the biopesticide. We observed that worsening of the disease has led players from citrus chain to search for new forms of insect control.

Based on the concept of a livable and global age-friendly city, pavements are a public facility that the city should provide to the people. Appropriate pavements will be beneficial for the people, particularly for good quality of life for the elderly to move around in the city. This study explored the behaviour of the elderly in the use of pavements and the problems confronted. The study also evaluated the value of the pavement walking area as it reflected the benefits of pavements to the elderly by applying the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). During March-May 2017, data were collected using interviews with 601 elderly living in Bangkok. The study indicated that the main problem for senior citizens regarding their use of pavements was from being disturbed by motorbikes riding on the pavements. The average value of pavement for the elderly was about THB 160 (USD 5.30) per person per year. Thus, the benefits of pavements to the elderly in Bangkok was approximately THB 158 million (USD 5.2 million) per year. Thus, policy makers should make proper budget allocations for elderly-friendly pavement management and seriously address the problems confronting the elderly in using pavements, to maximize the usefulness of pavements not only for the elderly but also for the public and to support a sustainable urban development.

Scotland is gradually coming to terms with its involvement in slavery and colonialism as part of the British Empire. This article places the spotlight on the lives of African Caribbean people who were residents of Edinburgh during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I discuss their varied experiences and contributions: from runaways and men fighting for their freedom in the Scottish courts to women working as servants in city households or marrying into Edinburgh high society. The nineteenth century saw activism among political radicals from abolitionists to anticolonialists; some of these figures studied and taught at Edinburgh University. Their stories reflect the Scottish capital’s many direct connections with the Caribbean region.
