Subject of this study is the influence specific property of knitted fabrics on the design processes of upper ladies' garment. A comparative analysis of the methodology for pattern making the ladies dress from knitted fabric was made. The purpose of the analysis is to serve for improvement design processes of clothing from knitwear.

The paper briefly introduces main characteristics of chitin fibre, primary issues of wool knitted materials application in next-to-skin apparel and design of applying chitin to different wool fibre fabric. It focuses on design processes of knitted fabric, including principle of materials proportion and specification, and technique of fabric texture design. Notices regarding needles arrangement, knitting notation, and cam-setting etc. during fabric knitting, as well as production basis are also presented hereon.

Combined with seamless knitting technology, the temperature adjusting performance of Outlast viscose seamless knitted fabric is researched. Accepting differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the temperature adjusting performance tests of samples determined by the seamless knitting process design are done. Comparative analysis of endothermic and exothermic temperature ranges, peak temperatures, influence of interwoven ratios and weave structures on fabric ability of heat absorption, accumulation and release is studied. DSC results show that Outlast viscose seamless knitted fabrics have good temperature adjusting performance, provide a certain value on improving the wearing comfort of seamless knitted fabric.

The yarn feeding for a loop formation is a critical factor in determining the size and elasticity of highly elastic knitted fabrics. Currently, the prevalent production processes rely on experienced machine operators to set up the optimal feed rate by trial and error. To improve production efficiency and reduce the reliance on the operator’s skill, we attempt to create a structure model of tubular knitted fabric that could correlate the size as well as elasticity of fabric with the loop geometry parameters (wale spacing, course spacing) of the yarn feeding. The experimental tensile test of the elastic fabric verified that the model is able to deduce the yarn feeding parameters from the elasticity and dimensional requirements of the fabric to be knitted. It is also illustrated that the yarn feeding is a key factor in controlling the elasticity of knitted fabrics.

The present study deals with the optimization of multiple quality parameters of single jersey and 1×1 rib knitted fabrics using the desirability function approach. Comfort properties such as air permeability, thermal conductivity and safety properties such as UV protection are combined to yield an ‘overall desirability’ varying from zero to one. The overall desirability has been maximized versus target values for air permeability, thermal conductivity and UV resistance. Experimental validation confirms that the proposed method can be used to design a knitted fabric with desired comfort and UV resistance characteristics.

The mechanical response and damage mechanism of a 3D multi-structured knitted composite under quasi-tensile loadings are investigated based on experimental results. The multi-structured knitted composite consists of two knitted fabrics with weft double-faced interlock knitted fabric as core material and biaxial warp-knitted fabric as surface layer in the above-mentioned composite system, respectively. The tensile stress against strain curve is obtained to analyze the mechanical behavior. Furthermore, the failure mechanisms of 3D multi-structured knitted composite are discussed from the experimental observations by the initiation and propagation of damaged zone in knitted composites.

An instrument is described for the measurement of shear in knitted fabrics under conditions of constant tension and “equal length of side.” Shear hysteresis loops were obtained for a series of wool plain-knitted fabrics of different tightness factors. Typical curves and fabric parameters (shear rigidity and coercive shear force) are presented for the fabrics tested in two states of relaxation using several values of applied tension. The results have been analyzed statistically and a simple friction-elastic rheological model of the shear behaviour is examined. This model is interpreted in terms of the knitted fabric structure and the changes that occur when a shear deformation is applied. Relaxation was found to reduce the values of both the shear rigidity and the coercive shear force. The effect of tension was investigated, and suitable levels of tension are recommended for testing knitted fabrics in shear.

In order to investigate the changes of knitted fabric properties due to exposure to outdoor natural weathering, a series of single jersey fabrics made from different raw materials was produced. The fabrics were exposed to summer weather conditions in duration of three months. The exposure of knitted fabrics to outdoor natural weathering in the summer period affected all investigated properties, namely, structural properties, tensile properties and heat resistance. The most significant changes were: the vertical density increased up to 31%, the mass per unit area increased up to 26%, the breaking force decreased in both directions for up to 54% and the heat resistance decreased up to 18%.

Consumer points of view determine economical value of fabrics. Fabric luster plays a momentous role in attracting people's attention, especially for clothing and domestic purposes. Luster is defined by intensity of both specular and diffuse light reflection off of a surface. There are various methods for measuring surface luster. Gloss. Luster is described as the ratio of specular reflection in one angle to diffuse reflection in another angle. Two-bar warp knitted polyester fabrics such as Tricot, Locknit, Satin, reverse Locknit and Sharkskin in three different densities were provided. A mini gloss apparatus was applied to measure fabric specular reflection in the angle of sixty degrees, before and after disperse dying with different colors of white, blue and yellow. Results suggest that luster is a function of knitted fabric type, color and density. Enhancement of technical back luster resulted from longer underlap of the front bar. However, it did not change the technical face luster significantly. Density increased in all knitted fabrics and caused the luster to decrease. Dark color fabrics showed lower luster compared to light ones.
