The present note records for the first time the gobiid fish Ctenogobius stigmaticus (Poey, 1860) at Patos Lagoon stuary, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The known distribution of this species is therefore extended 600 km southwards.

The present note records for the first time the tropical gobiid fish Evorthodus lyricus (Girard, 1858) from Patos- Mirim Lagoon System, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Considering the known distribution of the species, and unpublished data obtained from fish collections, the present record widens the distribution of E. lyricus in 300 km southwards, and is the first occurrence of the species for freshwater conditions in southern Brazil.

The peritrich ciliates Vorticella veloxiiforme n.sp. and Vorticella ampullaria n.sp. were found as epibionts on the ampullarid mollusk Pomacea canaliculata collected from Patos Lagoon, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The detailed morphology of both species was investigated using live and stained specimens, as well as scanning electron microscopy. Zooids of Vorticella veloxiiforme are cup shaped measuring 57 X 41 μm on average. A J-shaped macronucleus lies in the upper half of the cell. One contractile vacuole was observed in the upper part of the cell. V. ampullaria presents an elongate zooid measuring 70 X 25 µm on average. A C-shaped macronucleus lies in the middle of the cell. Two contractile vacuoles are present: one close to the peristome and the other in the lower half of the cell. The pattern of oral polykinetids was typical of the genus, with all infundibular polykinetids composed by three rows of kinetosomes each. SEM revealed a regular pattern of pores present on the zooid membrane of both species. Analyses of the 18s rDNA placed the two new species in the order Vorticellida close to described species of Vorticella.

A New Species

The Araneidae is a speciose family including web-spinning spiders that are very abundant in various terrestrial ecosystems. Sixty-five araneid species from 20 genera were collected during an inventory of riparian forests in southern Brazil. Among these were one new species, described here as Mangora piratini sp. nov. Also discovered were the previously unknown males of Alpaida citrina (Keyserling, 1893), A. octolobata Levi, 1988 and Testudinaria lemniscata (Simon, 1895), which are described here for the first time. Metazygia floresta Levi, 1995, Ocrepeira malleri Levi, 1993 and Testudinaria quadripunctata Taczanowski, 1879 are recorded for the first time for Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

Until now no species of Rhinocricus have been described or registered for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In thiswork we describe and illustrate five new species of Rhinocricus from Rio Grande do Sul: R. itauba sp. nov., R. gauchussp. nov., R. guaritas sp. nov., and R. serranus sp. nov., described from specimens of both sexes, and R. vacariensis sp. nov.based on a single male. The species R. divaricatus, R. padbergi and R. serratus are registered for the first time for this state. A key to Rio Grande do Sul species is presented.

ABSTRACT: Eimeria infections are common in the sheep industry worldwide. Lambs are more susceptible to coccidiosis, especially in stressful conditions, being infected by different species of the parasite. Eimeria crandallis and Eimeria ovinoidalis are considered the most pathogenic, causing reduced growth, dehydration, anorexia, and death. In this study, the frequency of Eimeria species was evaluated in lambs from the southern region of the Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Fecal samples from 248 lambs, from 19 farms, were tested for the presence of oocysts. The positive samples were re-examined and the sporulated oocysts analyzed morphometrically to identify the presence of Eimeria species. In 100% of the evaluated farms, there were animals positive for the protozoan. The frequency of Eimeria species was: E. ovinoidalis (94.74%), E. crandallis (89.47%), E. granulosa (78.95%), E. parva (68.42%), E. ahsata (63.13%), E. punctata (42.11%), E. bakuensis (36.84%), E. faurei (10.53%), and E. pallida (5.26%). Mixed infection was found in 94.74% of the samples. This research describes, for the first time, the occurrence of E. crandallis and E. ovinoidalis infecting lambs in the study area. The wide distribution of this protozoan and the high frequency of pathogenic species show the importance and potential damage of sheep coccidiosis in herds from Rio Grande do Sul.

A New Species

A new species of triadal coralsnake (Micrurus) is described from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new species differs from other Micrurus species in southern Brazil by the following characters: snout mostly black, head completely black, white gular region, triads with middle black ring 1.5 to 2 times longer than the external black rings, white rings shorter than the external black rings.  The new species occurs sympatrically with M. altirostris and adds to the following known triadal species for the region: M. baliocoryphus, M. pyrrhocryptus, M. lemniscatus, and Micrurus decoratus. Its current range is restricted to Rio Grande do Sul but it may reach adjacent areas of Argentina and Paraguay.

(A new species of Graphis [Graphidaceae: Lichenized Ascomycota] and a revised key of the genus in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil). In this paper we describe a new species of the lichen genus Graphis, namely G. suzanae Koch & Feuerstein. This species is characterized mainly by lirellae with entire labia, a partially exposed disc with orange pigment in the epithecium, a lateral thalline margin, a laterally carbonized excipulum, a clear hymenium, and transversely septate ascospores measuring 40–44 × 8–10 μm. The chemistry of the species was assessed through TLC analysis. A complete key with G. suzanae and 56 more species of Graphis that where previously recorded to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, is included.

AbstractA new species of Pseudis is described from São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is known from the southern parts of the Serra Geral where it occurs in grassland, inhabiting permanent ponds and still-water zones of slow flowing creeks. It is characterized by a paired vocal sac and a bulbous thumb, considerably widened at the base. It is distinguished from P. minutus by its different call, body coloration, rounded snout, and a more robust body with shorter hindlimbs. Advertisement call, tadpole, and life history are described. The taxonomy of the family Pseudidae in Rio Grande do Sul is discussed, supporting the synonymy of Lysapsus mantidactylus and P. meridionalis with P. minutus.
