The lakes’ fisheries play an important role in the Egyptian economy. Egyptian lakes face many challenges such as over-fishing, illegal and destructive fishing methods, human activities and pollution which affected the fish production from it. The lakes’ contribution to the Egyptian fish production decreased from about 50% in 80’s to the only 10% during 2017. Lake Nasser, as one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, plays a significant role in Egyptian fisheries. Its mean annual fish production is about 28,000 ton, this constituted 18% of the total fish harvested from Egyptian lakes. The catch and effort data over 15 years were collected from the lake and analyzed to assess its status and to summerize the main problems facing its development and management. Maximum Sustainable Yield of Nasser lake with special reference to the Nile tilapia, the main species in the lake, is estimated based on catch and effort data from 2003 to 2017. The computer software packages of ASPIC had been used. The surplus production model of Schaefer was applied in this study. The obtained results proved the over exploitation situation for the lake fishery and to achieve the sustainability many applicable measures are recommended.

Kaptai Lake (KL), the largest inland watershed in Bangladesh (ca. 700 km2) and one of Southeast Asia’s largest artificial reservoirs, features an abundant variety of indigenous fishery species. Moreover, it provides a plethora of ecological benefits to society. Nevertheless, the KL is suffering from multidimensional natural and anthropogenic stressors that threaten these wetlands’ sustainability. Though the legal framework assures sustainable conservation of fisheries resources, the implementation scenarios of fisheries laws, regulations, and policies in the KL wetland are insufficient. This study aimed at assessing the fisher’s perception of the regulation implementation efficiency of the Protection and Conservation Fish Act of 1950, while analyzing the effectiveness of the legal framework in the context of biodiversity conservation and the management sustainability of KL. By integrating qualitative and quantitative data collected through participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools viz. 225 interviews with fishers, four focus group discussions, and 12 key informant interviews, the investigation was performed in four selected areas in KL. The findings show that fishers routinely disregard laws and restrictions of the Protection and Conservation of Fish Act 1950 due to various socioeconomic and political forces. Although the annual fish harvest rate from KL appears to be increasing, the lake is losing its charismatic biological diversity primarily due to inappropriate and ineffective enforcement of fishing regulations. Many fishers believe that they still follow the act’s significant laws and regulations while being involved in several destructive and prohibited fishing practices. There is a link between community awareness, the scope of the act’s provisions, the effectiveness of its enforcement, and the strength of its execution. One of the leading causes of biodiversity loss in the KL is inadequate and ineffective fishing regulations. Improvement in the enforcement of the fishing act may be the prominent option to ensure better biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of this wetland. This result calls for functional and policy attention to revising the regulations to account for socioeconomic and political elements contributing to environmental degradation. This study also highlights the urgent need for transdisciplinary collaboration initiatives and synchronous cooperation among the agencies in order to effectively implement the fishing laws and contribute to better conservation and sustainability of the Kaptai lake fisheries resources.

Abstract Metformin, a clinical agent of type 2 diabetes, is reported as a potential geroprotector. Viral infection induces phenotypes of senescence in human T cells, and polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly I:C), a viral mimic, induces upregulation of SA-β-gal activity in ovary of the annual fish Nothobranchius guentheri. However, the effects and mechanisms of metformin on poly I:C-induced aging-like phenomena are poorly understood in vertebrates. In this study, the activity of SA-β-gal increased in gut of 12-month-old fish and poly I:C-injected 6-month-old fish, compared to 6-month-old control fish, indicating that poly I:C induces aging-like phenomena in gut of the fish. Metformin supplementation retarded accumulation of SA-β-gal in gut of old fish and poly I:C-treated young fish. The results of q-PCR analysis showed that metformin reduced NF-κB mediated inflammatory response including decreased level of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-8 and increased expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in gut of the fish with natural aging and poly I:C-injected 6-month-old fish. Metformin also exhibited antioxidant effects, as it reduced ROS production which is associated with the upregulation of FoxO3a and PGC-1α in gut of 6-month-old fish with poly I:C-injection. Expression of AMPK and SIRT1 was reduced in gut of 6-month-old fish with poly I:C-treatment, and feeding metformin reversed these declines. Taken together, the present study suggested that poly I:C-injection led to aging-like phenomena in gut and metformin activated AMPK and SIRT1 to reduce NF-κB mediated inflammation and resist oxidative stress via enhanced expression of FoxO3a and PGC-1α, and finally delayed gut aging in vertebrates.

Abstract BackgroundDiapause is a key adaptation that enabled the colonization of ephemeral habitats subject to the alternation of dry and wet seasons by annual killifishes. Upon desiccation of the ponds, killifish embryos remain vital but quiescent in the clay, where they can survive months or even years. Diapause can occur at three different developmental stages, but Diapause II (DII), which occurs at mid-somitogenesis, is the primary point of developmental arrest. However, diapause is not obligatory, and some embryos can proceed to direct development, skipping one or more diapauses. The precise molecular mechanisms that regulate entry and exit from diapause are beginning to be investigated, but this knowledge is yet fragmentary. Diapause has evolved independently several times in killifish clades from Africa and South America, enabling the identification of possible molecular determinants of diapause by comparative expression analysis. MicroRNAs are small RNAs that represent central nodes in the control of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level and are involved in many developmental processes. Here, we compare microRNA expression profiles of annual killifishes during DII with non-annual killifish in a comparable stage of morphological development. ResultsWe used smallRNA-Seq to quantify microRNA expression from four annual- and four non-annual killifish species from three independent clades and from direct-developing embryos of the annual fish Nothobranchius furzeri. We analyzed the expression of broadly conserved microRNAs and microRNAs that appear to have evolved in the killifish lineage.We found several microRNAs that showed convergent regulation in the three different clades, and for some microRNAs also a phenomenon of switch in the prevalent form between 3p and 5p or vice versa was noted. In addition, we detected a significant overlap between the microRNA regulation during diapause and aging. Particularly interesting is the regulation of the miR-430 family. These microRNAs represent the second most expressed microRNA family in the killifish embryos, and diapause is associated with dramatic down-regulation of the prevalent -3p form and up-regulation of the -5p form. Members of the miR-430 family are contained in a large repetitive cluster whose organization is variable among teleost. Analysis of recently sequenced 45 low-coverage killifish genomes revealed that the miR-430 locus contains a lower number of copies in annual- as opposed to non-annual killifish. ConclusionsThe Evolution of diapause is reflected in the convergent evolution of microRNA regulation in killifishes. A prominent feature is a dramatic down-regulation of miR-430 expression that could be partially explained with a reduction of its copy numbers in the genome.

Aquaponics, the water-reusing production of fish and crops, is taken as an example to investigate the consequences of upscaling a nature-based solution in a circular city. We developed an upscaled-aquaponic scenario for the German metropolis of Berlin, analysed the impacts, and studied the system dynamics. To meet the annual fish, tomato, and lettuce demand of Berlin’s 3.77 million residents would require approximately 370 aquaponic facilities covering a total area of 224 hectares and the use of different combinations of fish and crops: catfish/tomato (56%), catfish/lettuce (13%), and tilapia/tomato (31%). As a predominant effect, in terms of water, aquaponic production would save about 2.0 million m3 of water compared to the baseline. On the supply-side, we identified significant causal link chains concerning the Food-Water-Energy nexus at the aquaponic facility level as well as causal relations of a production relocation to Berlin. On the demand-side, a ‘freshwater pescatarian diet’ is discussed. The new and comprehensive findings at different system levels require further investigations on this topic. Upscaled aquaponics can produce a relevant contribution to Berlin’s sustainability and to implement it, research is needed to find suitable sites for local aquaponics in Berlin, possibly inside buildings, on urban roofscape, or in peri-urban areas.

Following on from the Annual Fish Veterinary Society Conference, this symposium was organised with the Laboratory Animal Science Association and brought together experts from ornamental (pond and aquarium) fish practice, aquaculture and aquatic-research facilities to discuss good practice of anaesthesia. This proceedings paper gives an overview of relevant experiences involving a range of immersion drugs including tricaine, benzocaine and isoeugenol, as well as a summary of the main topics of discussion. While fish anaesthesia is commonplace, administration methods, drugs and monitoring procedures may often be regarded as antiquated when compared with mammalian practice. These limitations notwithstanding, individual fish will benefit from good anaesthetic monitoring. Although the most common anaesthetic drugs may be perceived as equally efficacious and therefore interchangeable for different settings, challenges are different for the anaesthesia of grouped fish, when determining species-dependent anaesthetic dosing in a multi-species tank, or adapting to farming requirements, nationally licensed products, costs and withdrawal periods. The fish anaesthetic arsenal fails to address premedication, analgesia and issues of averseness. The two latter factors should be part of the evaluation of anaesthetic protocols; therefore, instructions for the analgesic provision of lidocaine to fin clipped zebrafish are proposed. Euthanasia practices could sometimes be refined too. Alternative physical methods such as electrical stunning are options to be considered.
