Herein we present the first lists of anuran species of five islands off the coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and updated lists for two other islands (Ilha Grande and Ilha da Marambaia). These lists resulted from thorough searches of the literature and of herpetological collections databases, and from surveys on the islands conducted between March 2009 and January 2011. Currently there are 49 species of anurans distributed in 10 families recorded for these islands and this number accounts for c. 90% of the diversity present in the nearby mainland areas. Although Hylidae represents more than 40% of the species recorded on the islands, Thoropa miliaris (Cycloramphidae) is the only species present on all islands. On the islands there are three endemic species and two species listed as threatened by the IUCN. This study has added seven species to the previous list for Ilha Grande and two species to the list for Ilha da Marambaia.

We present a list of the anuran amphibians from “restinga” of Grumari, part of the Parque Natural Municipal de Grumari (PNMG), Rio de Janeiro municipality, state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. This study was carried out from May 2009 to December 2010 using two active sampling methods: quadrant plots and acoustic/visual transects. We recorded 22 anuran species distributed in six families: Bufonidae (1 species), Craugastoridae (1), Hylidae (14), Leptodactylidae (3), Microhylidae (2) and Strabomantidae (1). The presence of endangered and endemic species evidence Grumari’s importance as an area for conservation of the “restinga” habitat remnants in Rio de Janeiro. Grumari is also one of the richest known areas in terms of amphibian species among the “restinga” areas studied to date in Brazil, second only to Mata de São João, Bahia.

An inventory of the bembicine wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae: Bembicinae: Bembicini, except Gorytina) found in Rio de Janeiro State is provided, based on the revision of the literature and on the examination of the entomological collections of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (CEIOC) and Museu Nacional - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ). Original biological notes on Rubrica nasuta (Christ, 1791), Stictia signata signata (Linnaeus, 1758) and Stictia punctata (Fabricius, 1775) are also provided.

Abstract Recent in situ samplings and analysis of herbarium material revealed new occurrences of Coussapoa curranii (Urticaceae). In this study, an updated distribution map is given for the species in the Brazil. Nevertheless, due to the low representativeness of individuals in forestry surveys, and its natural occurrence in environments under threat of degradation, it is necessary to categorize this species as Critically Threatened (CR) according to IUCN criteria. Also, as a result of this study and in compliance with Target 8 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, the species is being grown in the Parque Botânico do Ecomuseu Ilha Grande. This park is located in the area of its most recent record of natural occurrence, Parque Estadual da Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Aiming to improve the database produced during the project Diversity of the Atlantic Forest of the Rio de Janeiro State, new geographic records of sphecid wasps in Rio de Janeiro State are provided. The sphecid fauna found in the sandy coastal plains, lowland forested areas and highland areas on the Serra dos Órgãos are compared and an estimate of the total number of species of Sphecidae from Rio de Janeiro State is provided.

Floristic survey of flagellate green algae (Chlorophyceae and Prasinophyceae) from four water bodies in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeast Brazil. Samples were collected bimonthly from September 1988 to August 1991. Thirty-five taxa of which 31 in Chlorophyceae (24 Chlamydomonadales and seven Volvocales) and four in Prasinophyceae (Polyblepharidales) were identified. Twenty-three taxa are new records for Brazil and 31 are registered for the first time for Rio de Janeiro State. On basis of cell shape, location of the nucleus and degree of longitudinal striations on the chloroplast surface a new combination, Vitreochlamys lefevrei (Bourr.) Menezes & C. Bicudo, is proposed. Integrating studies among morphological analysis on natural/cultured material and characterizing of reproduction/life cycle as well the correlating between the occurrence of the species and environmental conditions are needed in order to better knowledge the degree of phenotypic plasticity within the members of the flagellate green algae in the country.

We report the first record of Sterna dougallii Montagu, 1813 on the southeastern Brazilian coast. During monthly bird surveys in the northern Rio de Janeiro State, on January 2012 we recovered a tern banded in Massachusetts, USA. The present record stretches the S. dougallii southernmost geographic distribution in Brazil (Bahia state) by about 600 km. It is difficult to evaluate this species’ regional status due to the absence of continuous sampling efforts.
