Floristic survey of flagellate green algae (Chlorophyceae and Prasinophyceae) from four water bodies in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeast Brazil. Samples were collected bimonthly from September 1988 to August 1991. Thirty-five taxa of which 31 in Chlorophyceae (24 Chlamydomonadales and seven Volvocales) and four in Prasinophyceae (Polyblepharidales) were identified. Twenty-three taxa are new records for Brazil and 31 are registered for the first time for Rio de Janeiro State. On basis of cell shape, location of the nucleus and degree of longitudinal striations on the chloroplast surface a new combination, Vitreochlamys lefevrei (Bourr.) Menezes & C. Bicudo, is proposed. Integrating studies among morphological analysis on natural/cultured material and characterizing of reproduction/life cycle as well the correlating between the occurrence of the species and environmental conditions are needed in order to better knowledge the degree of phenotypic plasticity within the members of the flagellate green algae in the country.

In this contribution six new species of Poeciloderrhis Stål, 1874 are described: P.aureolatus sp. nov. (Holotype male in MNRJ: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro State), P.mediansclerostylatus sp. nov. (Holotype male in MNRJ: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro State), P.diamantinensis sp. nov. (Holotype male in MNRJ: Brazil, Mato Grosso State), P.itatiaiensis sp. nov. (Holotype male in MNRJ: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro State), P.vanzolinii sp. nov. (Holotype male in MNRJ: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro State), and P.penduloides sp. nov. (Holotype male in MNRJ: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro State). The genus is recorded for the first time from the state of Rondônia, Brazil based on P.diamantinensis sp. nov. A new combination is proposed for Poeciloderrhisbicolorata Rocha e Silva & Lopes, 1977 that is transferred to Epilampra Burmeister, 1838. For specific delimation, the tergal modification in the abdomen, the genital plates and their respective structures were analyzed. A key for males including all species of Poeciloderrhis is also given.

This paper presents a floristic survey of Raphidophyceae (Heterokontophyta) found in three freshwater environments in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, based on samples collected bimonthly from September 1988 to August 1991. A total of 117 samples were collected, and eight of these contained cells of raphidophytes. Altogether five raphidophyte species, representing the genera Gonyostomum (2), Merotrichia (1), and Vacuolaria (2) were identified. Four species are new records for the State of Rio de Janeiro (G. semen, G. depressum, M. bacillata, V. virescens var. virescens), and one is reported for the first time in Brazil (V. viridis). Gonyostomum semen and V. virescens var. virescens are the most widespread taxa in the area, found in 50 and 25% of the total of samples, respectively. With the exception of M. bacillata and V. viridis, most of the taxa occurred in a natural oligotrophic lake with acidic waters, in accordance with the preference of raphidophytes for low pH. This study clearly supports the need for more extensive taxonomic surveys on these raphidophytes, based on field and cultured samples and under light and electron microscopy, to confirm the taxonomic identity of the previously reported species and to expand the knowledge of the taxa in Brazil. The bloom of G. semen reported here, together with its gradual dominance in the aquatic systems in the State of Rio de Janeiro seems to conform to the recent spread of this species into new areas, and can be viewed as a potential risk for environmental health.

Abstract. During two periods of studies (1980-1981 and 2012-2013), 31 species of tabanids were identified belonging to 16 genera on Marambaia Island, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Esenbeckia lugubris (Macquart), Phaeotabanus cajennensis (Fabricius), Tabanus claripennis (Bigot), Tabanus discus Wiedemann and Tabanus pungens Wiedemann are recorded for the first time in Rio de Janeiro state. Geographical and behavior data of the recorded species are also presented.Inventário e Notas Sobre o Comportamento de Mutucas (Diptera: Tabanidae) na Ilha da Marambaia, Rio de Janeiro, com Novos Registros para o EstadoResumo: Durante dois períodos de estudos (1980-1981 e 2012-2013), foram identificadas 31 espécies de tabanídeos pertencentes a 16 gêneros na Ilha da Marambaia, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Abstract. We record, for the first time, the presence of Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) in the Rio de Janeiro state, in an apiary constituted by 36 honeybee hives Apis mellifera L. No eggs or larvae of A. tumida were found, only adults. Since this is the second Brazilian state to record an infestation of small hive beetles, the responsible institutions and beekeepers on each federative unit must stay aware of this in order to prevent or retard their spreading.Notas sobre Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) em apiário no estado do Rio de JaneiroResumo. Foi notificada pela primeira vez a presença de Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidade) no estado do Rio de Janeiro em um apiário formado por 36 colmeias de abelhas Apis mellifera L. Não foi constatado presença de ovos ou larvas de A. tumida, somente adultos. Por ser o segundo estado do país a relatar ocorrência de uma espécie exótica considerada uma praga em criações de abelhas do gênero Apis em outros países e por deter pouco conhecimento sobre o impacto desse invasor na apicultura nacional, os órgãos competentes em cada unidade federativa deverão ficar atentos e montar estratégias de prevenção e vigilância, a fim controlar e/ou erradicar A. tumida em solo brasileiro.

Few sites have been well sampled for bats, and samplings in islands are even scarcer. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were: (1) to list the bat species of Ilha da Marambaia; (2) to compare richness, abundance and biomass of bat guilds found there; (3) to analyse abundance patterns of bat species; and (4) to compare richness, abundance and composition of the bat fauna among different kinds of environment. To capture bats we used mist nets set in five different environments, totalising 3559.2 net-hours, during 37 nights between October 2006 and August 2008. A total of 1,133 captures were accomplished, comprising 34 species from five families. The most abundant species was Molossus molossus. Frugivorous bats exhibited higher richness, abundance and biomass if compared to other guilds. Most species (N = 22) exhibited abundances between 1 to 10% of all captures. Sixteen species were restricted to just one of the environments sampled. The high richness may be attributed to sampling carried out in several environments, and to the capture of insectivorous species over water bodies.

Mazocraeoides georgei price, 1936 and mazocraeoides opisthonema Hargis, 1955 are reported for the first time in Brazil in Brevoortia aurea (Spix, 1829) and in Harengula clupeola (Cuvier, 1829) respectively, clupeid fishes from the littoral of Rio de janeiro State, which represent new host records. Mazocraeoides olentangiensis Sroufe, 1958 and mazocraeoides hargisi Price, 1961 are considered new synonyms for Mazocraeoides georgei.

Rhipidocotyle pentagonum (Ozaki, 1924) is reported for the first time in South America parasitizing Auxis thazard and in a new host Katsuwonus pelamis. Tergestia laticollis (Rudolphi, 1819) is reported for the first time in South America and in Thunnus albacares, representing a new host record. Copiatestes filiferus (Leuckart, in Sars, 1885) is recorded for the first time in Brazil and in Thunnus albacares, another new host record. Tetrochetus coryphaenae (Yamaguti, 1934) is presented for the first time in Brazil parasitizing Thunnus albacares.

We present the details of a survey with species of passalid conducted in the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (Cachoeiras de Macacu, Rio de Janeiro State) together with illustrations for each species and an identification key. The study includes material collected between May 2010 and October 2013. We identified 11 species in three genera and two tribes (Passalini and Proculini). Passalini comprised two genera, Passalus with six species, and Spasalus with one species, representing 71.42% of all the species encountered. Proculini was represented by only one genus Veturius, with four species, representing 28.57% of the species surveyed. Nine species were recorded for the first time from Cachoeiras de Macacu municipality.

Abstract: Inventories in Brazilian restingas have been indicating that Myrtaceae are the plant family with the greatest richness of insect galls. A compilation of published data plus new records was elaborated with the aim of stablishing the number of gall morphotypes on this family in this physiognomy of the Atlantic Forest, producing a list of galled species, pointing out the predominant gall features, evaluating the taxonomical knowledge of the gallers, listing the associated fauna, and based on host plant endemisms and monophagy proposing the endemism of some galling species. Myrtaceae harbor 111 morphotypes of insect gall (about 75% induced by Cecidomyiidae, Diptera) on 25 host plant species, 15 endemic. Eugenia L. highlights as the plant genus with the highest number of galled species and gall richness. Leaves are the most galled organ. There is a predominance of globoid and fusiform shapes, green color, glabrous surface and a single internal chamber. The taxonomical data on gallers is deficient as many records have been presented at supraspecific levels. The associated fauna is rich and includes parasitoids, inquilines and predators. Twelve species of Cecidomyiidae, a single species of Curculionidae (Coleoptera) and one species of Eriococcidae (Hemiptera) have been associated exclusively with endemic hosts and then are proposed in the present study as endemic too. The geographical distribution of many galls and respective gallers are restricted to the State of Rio de Janeiro, where most inventories have been carried out. For the first time, Eugeniamyia dispar, previously known from a rural area of Rio Grande do Sul and restinga areas of São Paulo, is recorded in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Poduromorpha order currently includes 11 families, 330 genera, and approximately 3.400 species, which are widely distributed. In Brazil, there are seven families, 48 genera, and 141 species, 74 of which occur in Rio de Janeiro State. Poduromorpha fauna has been investigated over the last years, especially those from the Brazilian southeastern region. The objective of the present work was to gather and expand information on Poduromorpha in Rio de Janeiro State from literature, data from Scientific Collections, dissertations, theses, and congress communications. As a result, 40 genera and 81 species have been recorded, five of which having been registered for the first time in Rio de Janeiro State.
