DEPOSITION OF PbS THIN FILMS FROM LEAD HEXADECYL AND OCTADECYL XANTHATE COMPLEXES USING THE SPIN COATING METHOD

AbstractLead sulphide thin films have been successfully deposited by spin coating lead hexadecyl and octadecyl xanthate onto glass substrates and annealed at moderate temperatures. The thin films were characterized using powder x-ray diffractometer (p-XRD) and were found to be face centred cubic (FCC) with the (200) being the most preferred orientation. The optical band gaps obtained were 0.93 and 1.00 eV respectively for PbS from complexes (1) and (2) annealed at 350 °C. They were all blue shifted from the bulk value of 0.41 eV.

Lead ethyl dithiocarbamates have been successfully used as single-source precursors for the deposition of PbS using spin coating followed by annealing at moderate temperatures. The thin films were characterized using a powder X-ray diffractometer and were found to be face-centred cubic with the (200) plane being the most preferred orientation. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the formation of well-defined cubes. Optical band gaps of PbS thin films were estimated using Tauc plots as 0.72, 0.73 and 0.77 eV at annealing temperatures of 250, 300 and 400°C. These band gaps were all blue shifted from the bulk value of 0.41 eV. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis was used to determine the composition of the thin films which showed an approximately 1 : 1 Pb to S ratio.

Al and Sb codoped ZnO thin films were prepared through a sol-gel spin coating method on glass substrates and annealed in different atmospheres. The XRD results show that the films have hexagonal wurtzite ZnO structure and SEM results reveal that the films annealed in hydrogen consist of hexagonal nanorods with diameters of 84 nm and lengths of 422 nm, however the films annealed in other atmospheres without nanorods. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum shows that the emission peaks of the films are mostly at 390 and 460 nm, and the film annealed in hydrogen has the strongest intensity of peak at 390 nm and the film annealed in air has the strongest intensity of peak at 460 nm. The electrical properties show that the films annealed in hydrogen have a lowest resistivity of 1.02×10-3 Ω•cm.

Na-doped ZnO thin films were deposited on microscope glass substrates by sol-gel spin coating method, the Na/Zn ratio were 0at.%, 5at.%, 7.5at.%, 10at.%, 15at.%. The crystal structures, surface morphology, and optical properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer, respectively. The results show that all the films are preferentially oriented along the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface. With the increase of the doping concentration, the roughness of the surfaces decrease and grain size grows from 17.1nm to 21.7nm, the sample with 10at.% Na exhibits best crystallinity and has lowest strain along the c-axis. The average optical transparency of the samples is higher than 70%, optical band gaps are between 3.213eV and 3.289eV.
