AbstractLaser ablation of metals and reaction with hydrocarbon produces clusters of metal carbides. Metal precursors are from group IVb to VIb of the periodic system. The mass distribution is analysed by TOF in the gas phase. The clusters are deposited on carbon and investigated by TEM and STM. The materials are very hard and very flat and include Ti-C, Zr-C, V-C, Nb-C, and TaC.
