Abstract This paper is on a simplified model of an in-plane blade-hub dynamics of a horizontal-axis wind turbine with a mistuned blade. The model has cyclic parametric and direct excitation due to gravity and aerodynamics. This work follows up a previous perturbation study applied to the blade equations written in the rotor-angle domain and decoupled from the hub, in which superharmonic and primary resonances were analyzed. In this work, the effects of mistuning, damping, and forcing level are illustrated. The first-order perturbation solutions are verified with comparisons to numerical simulations at superharmonic resonance of order two. Additionally, the effect of rotor loading on the rotor speed and blade amplitudes is investigated for different initial conditions and mistuning cases.

Operating horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbine (HAHT) generates noise affecting the ocean environment adversely. Therefore, it is essential to determine the noise characteristics of such types of HAHT, as large-scale turbine sets would release more noise pollution to the ocean. Like other rotating machinery, the hydrodynamic noise generated by the rotating turbine has been known to be the most important noise source. In the present work, the transient turbulent flow field of the HAHT is obtained by incompressible large eddy simulation, thereafter, the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings acoustic analogy formulation is carried out to predict the noise generated from the pressure fluctuations of the blade surface. The coefficient of power is compared with the experimental results, with a good agreement being achieved. It is seen from the pressure contours that the 80% span of the blade has the most severe pressure fluctuations, which concentrate on the region of leading the edge of the airfoil and the suction surface of the airfoil. Then, the noise characteristics around a single turbine are systematically studied, in accordance with the results of the flow field. The noise characteristics around the whole turbine are also investigated to determine the directionality of the noise emission of HAHT.

The aim of this paper is to numerically explore the feasibility of designing a Mini-Hydro turbine. The interest for this kind of horizontal axis turbine relies on its versatility. In the present study, the numerical solution of the discredited three-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations over an unstructured grid is accomplished with an ANSYS program. In this study, a mini hydro turbine (3kW) has been considered for utilization of horizontal axis impeller. The turbine performance and flow behavior have been evaluated by means of numerical simulations. Moreover, the performance of the impeller varied in the pressure distribution, torque, rotational speed and power generated by the different number of blades and angles. The results trends are similar between the highest pressure distributions at the impeller also produced highest power outputs on 6 numbers of blades at impeller. The model has been validated, comparing numerical results with available experimental data.
