We determined the age and growth of the dog snapper (Lutjanus jocu), caught in the region of Abrolhos Bank, Bahia State, by the fishermen from coastal communities of Prado, Alcobaça, Caravelas, and Nova Viçosa. We examined 205 sectioned otoliths of fish caught by harpoon, longline, hand line, and gill nets (14.5 to 79.5 cm fork length). The formation of each ring was considered annual. The sectioned otoliths showed between 0 and 29 rings. Nearly half of the analyzed specimens had between 0 and 7 rings (88 of 205). Fish caught with nets in the estuarine region were the juvenile, while fish caught with lines and harpoons were the oldest. Two von Bertalanffy growth models were fitted to length-at-age data: one assuming constant variance of length-at-age (SVB) and another assuming constant coefficient of variation, i.e. variance increasing as a function of average size (CVVB). The SVB estimates were Loo = 87.82 cm, K = 0.10, and t0 = -1.486 and the CVVB estimates were Loo = 117.60 cm, K = 0.06, and t0 = -2.470. The largest Loo values estimated by the CVVB model are supported by reports from the literature of larger animals occurring in the deeper outer shelf of Abrolhos Bank. Growth parameters were also estimated for males and females separately (SVB model) (Loo = 92.80 cm, K = 0.099, and t0 = -1.680 for males, and Loo = 82.10 cm, K = 0.105, and t0 = -1.570 for females).

The age and growth parameters of grey triggerfish, Balistes capriscus from the Gulf of Gabès, southern Tunisia, Mediterranean Sea, were estimated from the first dorsal spine sections of 463 specimens (206 males and 257 females), whose fork length was between 139 and 427 mm and the total weight ranged from 90.04 to 1967.41 g. The monthly percentage of specimens having a terminal translucent zone has indicated that the growth zone is formed once a year, during the cold season (February). The von Bertalanffy growth equations were: FL = 420.7 [1 − e−0.233(t + 0.123)] and FL = 417.0 [1 − e−0.238(t + 0.074)], for males and females, respectively. The longevity estimated was 13 years old for both sexes. The instantaneous mortality rates were estimated to 0.23 for males and 0.24 for females. The weight–length relationships of the grey triggerfish were Wt = 21.510−3 LF3.046 and Wt = 41.010−3 LF2.835, for males and females, respectively.

Age and length data of 291 franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) incidentally captured on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), southern Brazil, were used to fit growth curves using Gompertz and Von Bertalanffy growth models. A small sample of franciscanas (N = 35) from Buenos Aires Province (BA), Argentina, were used to see if there are apparent growth differences between the populations. Male and female franciscana samples from both areas were primarily (78–85%) <4 years of age. The Von Bertalanffy growth model with a data set that excluded animals <1 year of age provided the best fit to data. Based on this model, dolphins from the RS population reached asymptotic length at 136.0 cm and 158.4 cm, for males and females, respectively. No remarkable differences were observed in the growth trajectories of males and females between the RS and BA populations.

Age and growth of the king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) were estimated for northeastern Brazil. A total of 405 sagittal otoliths from 140 males (24.4-112 cm), 73 females (28-114.8 cm) and 193 specimens of unknown sex (11.5-121 cm) were examined. Marginal increment analysis indicated an annual pattern for growth band deposition. The age classes ranged from 1 to 15 years. Length ranged from 11.5 to 121 cm. The Schnute model indicated that the von Bertalanffy growth model demonstrated the best adjustment, with p=1/b, and was therefore used for estimating growth. Back-calculated curves had smaller variances, giving the following estimated growth parameters for males: L∞= 116.8 cm, K = 0.190, t0 = 0.377; and females: L∞= 132.7 cm, K = 0.159 and t0 = 0.387. In order to compare the curves for males and females, the overlapping of 95% confidence intervals was performed for the parameters generated from the von Bertalanffy non-linear least square method. Specimens between 3 and 8 years of age represented 82.2% (n=5,783) of the catch composition, characterizing the species as a catchable stock in the region.

The otoliths of the Atlantic bonito, Sarda sarda (Bloch, 1793), were examined with the aim to estimate the age and growth of the species in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and to reveal possible relationships between otolith shape or size and age. All specimens used in this study, ranging from 7.2 to 70.4 cm in fork length and from 20 to 4889 g in total weight, were caught in the Aegean and Ionian Seas during the period 1997-2010. Otolith morphometry was studied using image analysis techniques for all intact sagittae ranging in weight from 0.6 to 11.3 mg and four shape indices were calculated. No statistical significant differences between left and right otolith morphometric variables were found. The age of fish was estimated by counting the pairs of opaque and translucent bands in transversal thin sections of otoliths. The estimated ages ranged from 0+ to 7 years and the von Bertalanffy growth parameters were determined \((L∞=79.9 cm, k=0.261 and to=-1.230 years)\). The examination of the type of growth bands at the outside margin of each otolith per month showed that one translucent band is formed annually during the cold season. The results revealed statistically significant relationships between otolith morphometric variables and fish length or age. Among the variables, otolith weight was the one that showed the highest correlation with age (R=0.77). Therefore, otolith weight could represent a valuable criterion for age estimation in Atlantic bonito that is objective, economic and easy to perform compared to annuli counting method in hard parts.

Age and growth were estimated from counts of otolith annuli for pink ling (Genypterus blacodes) and gemfish (Rexea solandri). Sections of otoliths were preferable for age determinations of pink ling, whereas whole otoliths were preferable for gemfish. Validation of the assigned age classes was not achieved. Petersen's length-frequency method was unsuccessful and marginal increment methods were unsuitable for the species studied. Growth of males and females did not differ significantly for either pink ling or gemfish. Both species had a relatively slow growth rate, had a moderately long life-span and could reach body lengths in excess of 1 m. Maximum ages of pink ling and gemfish were, respectively, 21 and 13 years. Mean length-at-age and the von Bertalanffy growth functions were estimated. For pink ling (all individuals combined), K = 0.095 and L∞ = 135.5 cm. For gemfish the best estimates were K = 0.153 and L∞ = 112.3 cm. Precision of age determinations made independently by two readers for pink ling and gemfish, respectively, was 65% and 95% within �1 annulus; average per cent error, respectively, was 4.7% and 3.1%. Paired t-tests on ages assigned to each species by the two readers indicated no significant difference between ages assigned to gemfish, but there was a significant, albeit unbiased, difference for ages assigned to pink ling. However, for pink ling, estimates of the growth parameters derived separately from age determinations by the two readers were virtually identical.

Abstract. The main objective of this study was to predict mono and multiphasic growth model parameters of broilers. For this purpose daily body weights-age data of 106 male and female chickens reared under different stocking densities (GR1=11 birds/m2 , GR2=17 birds/m2 and GR3=25 birds/m2) were used. Results of mono and multiphasic (diphasic and triphasic) growth curve analyses showed that defining the growth of birds using multiphasic growth models instead of monophasic growth models, displays more detailed and reliable results. Based on goodness-of-fit criteria, lead to the choice of a triphasic logistic growth function for GR1 and GR2, and diphasic function for GR3 males and females.

Age and growth studies for the scalloped hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini (Griffith and Smith, 1834) caught along the southern Brazilian coast, were based on ring measurements of vertebrae sections of 115 males, 116 females and 14 unknown sexed sharks between 48 and 344 cm total length (TL). The von Bertalanffy growth models were best fit using back-calculated data. The growth parameters obtained for males, were L∞ = 266 cm; K = 0.05/year; L0 = 47 cm. For females, L∞ = 300 cm; K = 0.05/year; L0 = 51 cm. An adult female reached 217 cm TL and was 31.5 years old. On the other hand, an adult male was 29.5 years old and measured 234 cm TL. Longevity estimate for males and females was 55 years. Therefore, S. lewini is a long-lived fish. Ageing precision, based on the IAPE index, was 5.6%. Marginal Increment analysis based on MIR index from hammerheads smaller than 105 cm, compared with the percentual of opaque and hyaline bands found per month ageing whole vertebrae, showed an annual ring formation, i.e., in winter.

The age, growth, longevity, mortality and reproductive parameters were estimated for Dipturus oxyrinchus from the Gulf of Gabès (Southern Tunisia, central Mediterranean Sea), collected monthly during 2007 from commercial fisheries. The present study provides the first data on age and growth of this species in Tunisian waters, as well as additional data on its reproduction. A total of 240 females (16.5–105 cm total length (TL)) and 280 males (15.5–95 cm TL) were examined to study the reproductive cycle. A subsample of 285 specimens (175 females and 110 males, ranging from 15.5 to 105 cm TL) were analysed to study the age and growth. The oldest female in this study was 25 yr and 105 cm TL, whereas the oldest male was 22 yr and 95 cm. The annual deposition of growth bands was verified by marginal increment and edge analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞ = 123.9 ± 2.56 cm, K = 0.08 ± 0.004 yr−1 and t0 =  −1.26 ± 0.04 10−1 yr for females and L∞ = 102.1 ± 3.23 cm, K = 0.12 ± 0.007 10−3 yr−1 and t0 = −1.18 ± 0.03 10−1 yr for males. Growth was not significantly different between sexes. The maturity size was 72.05 cm for males and 82.1 cm for females. The maturity age was estimated to be 11.95 and 13.96 years, respectively, for males and females. Size and age at maturity were not significantly different between sexes. The estimated longevity was 26.18 and 38.84 yr for males and females, respectively. Based on life history parameters, natural mortality was estimated at 0.53 yr−1 for females and 0.41 yr−1 for males.

Age and growth parameters of cachara Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889) (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) (males and females) were estimated through the analysis of growth rings in spines of pectoral fins. Fish were collected from January to December 2007, in the area directly influenced by the Aproveitamento Múltiplo de Manso (APM Manso) and in the Cuiabá River (upper parts of the Pantanal). The maximum number of growth rings was seven for males, and eight, for females. The analysis of temporal variations in mean marginal increment showed that rings found in the spines were formed annually, in December. Growth rings were associated to spawning (in the study region from November to March) of the species. The growth curve in length was obtained by the von Bertalanffy model adjusted by the Ford-Walford transformation. The equations are: Ls = 72.7*[1-e-0.44(t+1.5974)] for males, and Ls = 84.5*[1-e-0.33(t+2.0943)] for females. The equations that describe the growth curve in weight are: Wt = 4991.61*[1-e-0.44 (t+1.5974] 2.70 for males and Wt = 7503.17*[1-e-0.33 (t+2.0943] 2.99 for females.

Short Communication: Age and growth of elongated mudskipper, Pseudapocryptes elongatus (Cuvier, 1816) from Sundarbans, India. Biodiversitas 20: 85-90. The estimation of age and mathematical expression of fish growth is complex and debated subject in fishery sciences. Growth parameters of elongated mudskipper, Pseudapocryptes elongatus were estimated based on the length frequency data using FiSAT II software (several tools such as Powell-Wetherall method, ELEFAN and von Bertalanffy growth estimates). Samples were collected from Sundarbans mangroves using gill and cast nets and by hand picking. The length-frequency (LFQ) of P.elongatus was recorded from January 2014 to December 2015 and the above tools estimated the growth parameters (L∞, K and t0) from the progression of LFQ modes through time. L∞ and K values of males were 220.50 mm and 1.3 yr-1, respectively and similarly, L∞ and K values of females were 221.05 mm and 1.21 yr-1, respectively. The t0 values estimated for males and females were-0.1915 years and-0.1661 years, respectively. The estimated growth performance index (Φ) values for males and females of P. elongatus were 4.394 and 4.503, respectively. The lifespan of both the sexes was found to be 4+ years.
