Serranus aliceae n. sp. is described from Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo States, southeastern Brazilian coast. The species is readily distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: scales around the caudal peduncle 20 or 21; total gill rakers on first branchial arch 23-29; cheek-scales rows 5 or 6; and by the coloration of live specimens, which are reddish with a broad, conspicuous, white stripe from post-orbital region to the caudal-fin base and a white abdomen. The new species apparently inhabits the deeper (30 or more meters) portions of reef environments along the subtropical Brazilian coast, and is possibly associated with upwelling cold-water masses. The species was observed hovering above rocky bottoms, feeding on micro-crustaceans, squid larvae, and zooplankton. This new species increases to eight the number of valid Serranus species recorded in the southwestern Atlantic.

Ampelisca species are inhabitant of soft bottom marine benthic communities of tropical to cold – temperate zones. Prior to this paper, 11 species of the genus were recognized from Brazilian coast. Three new species of Ampelisca are herein described: Ampelisca longipropoda, Ampelisca meridionalis and Ampelisca youngi. The specimens were dredged from the continental shelf of Southwestern Atlantic Ocean between the latitudes 22°06’S and 34°32’S. A key to the Ampelisca species of the Brazilian coast is provided.

Material collected on the central Brazilian coast from the REVIZEE Benthos Program was analyzed and three new species were herein described. Knowledge about sexual dimorphism on Bonassa is improved. The hypothesis of endemism of the genus Amaryllis to Australia is contested with the discovery of a new species of Amaryllis in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. A new species of Lysianassa is described, and its differences to L. brasiliensis are commented too. Lysianopsis concavus Senna, 2007 is herein described with more details in description and figures. The distributions of the described species are given. Keys to identification of Brazilian Lysianassoidea families and Lysianassidae species are presented in this paper.Key-words: Amaryllis, Bonassa, Lysianassa, Lysianopsis, taxonomy, Brazilian province

Two new species in the genera Thyone and Havelockia are described and illustrated based upon specimens collected from off the southeastern Brazilian coast. Thyone florianoi sp. nov. is characterized by having two pillared body wall tables with four-holed discs and introvert with multilocular tables. Thyone crassidisca is recorded herein for the first time from the South Atlantic Ocean (Brazil). Havelockia mansoae sp. nov. is distinctive in having two pillared body wall tables with four-holed discs and introvert with plates. This is the first record of the genus Havelockia from Brazilian waters.

Three new species of Levinsenia were collected during a benthic survey, from 10–3,000 m deep, in Espírito Santo Basin, off the southeastern Brazilian coast. These species are L. paivai sp. nov., L. blakei sp. nov. and L. lesliae sp. nov. Members of L. paivai sp. nov. are recognized by the presence of nine pairs of well-developed and heavily ciliated branchiae, those of L. blakei sp. nov. are characterized by the presence of three pairs of small branchiae, and those of L. lesliae sp. nov., by the absence of branchiae and presence of notopodial transitional chaetae. These new species are described herein and compared to the most similar congeners. These are the first new species of Levinsenia described from off the Brazilian coast.

This work deals with haplosclerid sponges off the coast of Maranhão State, northeastern coast of Brazilian shelf (southwestern Atlantic). A new species is described, Haliclona (Halichoclona) lernerae. Four species are recorded for the first time for the Brazilian coast: Amphimedon caribica (Pulitzer-Finali, 1986); Niphates lutea Lehnert & Van Soest, 1999; Neopetrosia subtriangularis (Duchassaing, 1850) and Petrosia (Petrosia) weinbergi Van Soest, 1980. Three species were recollected from the southwestern Atlantic and have their geographic distribution extended on the Brazilian coast: Callyspongia (Cladochalina) vaginalis (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864), Oceanapia bartschi (De Laubenfels, 1934) and Xestospongia muta (Schmidt, 1870). Two species were collected for the first time from the Maranhão State Coast: Niphates erecta Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864 and Neopetrosia proxima (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864). A taxonomic study of those samples is given, including description, illustrations and geographic distribution.

Sclerothyone Thandar, 1989, currently restricted to two South African species, is here expanded to include two new species from off coast of Brazil. These new species expand the distribution of the genus to the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Sclerothyone reichi sp. nov. is characterized by having body wall with multilocular two pillared tables with multiperforate disc and short spire, ending in a narrow crown of teeth; tentacles with rods and introvert with two pillared tables and rosettes; tube feet with only end plates. Sclerothyone oloughlini sp. nov. is distinctive in having a body wall with multilocular, two pillared tables; handles present and multilocular two-pillared tables; circular disc without handle; and plates (near the anus). The new species resemble each other in the tentacles with rods. However, Sclerothyone oloughlini sp. nov. stands apart from S. reichi sp. nov. in the introvert with rosettes; tube feet with two pillared supporting tables, arched plates and end plates. The possible assignment of Cucumaria nozawai Mitsukuri, 1912 and Thyone adinopoda Pawson & Miller, 1981 to Sclerothyone, and the position of Thyone neofusus Deichmann, 1941 in Temparena Thandar, 1989, are briefly discussed. A key to all genera and species of Sclerodactylinae is provided.

The new species is compared both with other Dasyatis species of the southwestern Atlantic and with similarly shaped species of Dasyatis from other areas of the world. The holotype was collected in Maraj Bay; near Colares Island, district of Colares, Bel m, Par State, Brazil. It differs from known Dasyatis species by the combination of the following characters: a diamond-shaped (rhomboid) disc; an elongate snout (preorbital distance ranges from 35.7 to 37.7 % in disc width); a dark, well defined band or dark blotches outlining the lower lips; a row of small tubercles along midline of disc from shoulder region to base of tail, presenting a widespread and random arrangement; posterior margins of pectoral fins uniformly rounded; triangular-shaped pelvic fins with posterior margin almost straight or slightly sinuous and tips exceeding the limits of the posterior margin of disc; dorsal caudal keel absent in the holotype, but vestigial in both paratypes.

The pandalid genus Plesionika Bate, 1888 includes 92 species and has a widespread distribution. The new Plesionika species described herein was sampled by the oceanographic program REVIZEE Central (Fishery) at the Central Brazilian coast (from 11 o S to 22 o S) in depths ranging from 200 to 2000 m using ARROW and GOV nets. Additional material of the new species from the collection of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG), sampled at South Brazilian coast was also examined. Plesionika revizeei n. sp. is closely related to P. willisi (Pequegnat 1970), and the main feature that distinguishes these two species is the presence of epipods on pereopods 1–4 in the new species. This study provides a full description of the new species and an identification key to the Southwestern Atlantic species of Plesionika.
