Side-scan sonar surveys were carried out in two different areas on the inner continental shelf off the state of Espírito Santo (southeastern Brazil, Area 1- Guarapari Inner shelf -GUA and Area 2- Espirito Santo Bay - BES) and revealed bedforms much like those known as storm-generated bedforms. These bedforms are characterized by bands of fine sand deposited alternately over a coarse sand bottom, generating a deposit pattern of bands of fine sand intercalated with bands of coarse sand occurring between water depths of 25 to 30 m and five to eight m in GUA and ESB, respectively. In both areas, patches of coarse sand reveal the occurrence of wave-generated ripples, with crests that tend to be parallel to the coastline. The facies composition consists of very fine to fine muddy carbonate sands with siliciclastic fine gravel in GUA and coarse to medium sand with bioclastic gravel in BES. Thus, the influence of storm currents and waves in the formation and maintenance of these storm-generated bedforms is clear. However, the classification of the hydrodynamics and sediment transportation is required for estimating the formation, transportation and maintenance of these bedforms.

A new species of Polygordiidae, Polygordius jouinae sp. nov., along with its distribution, habitat, and reproduction is described. Polygordius jouinae sp. nov., the first North American Polygordius, is a dominant member of macrofaunal communities on the inner continental shelf, and in bays and harbours from Massachusetts to southern New Jersey. It is distinguished from most other Polygordius species by its non-inflated, heavily ciliated pygidium, absence of pygidial glands, and a conical (rather than rounded) prostomium. The 18S SSU rDNA from P. jouinae sp. nov. was sequenced and represents the first named Polygordius species with a DNA reference in GenBank. Spearman rank correlation of sediment grain size with density of P. jouinae sp. nov. at a New Jersey site showed that density was significantly (P<0.05; N=92) positively correlated with the proportion of medium to very coarse sand and negatively correlated with the fine sand fractions. Ecologically, P. jouinae sp. nov. is an important macrofaunal species given its widespread distribution and its fidelity for coarse sand habitats. Thus, its relative abundance may be useful as an indicator of changing sedimentary conditions.

Abstract—A new species of Dalechampia from southeastern Brazil, belonging to Dalechampia sect. Dioscoreifoliae, is described and illustrated here. Dalechampia margarethiae is a twining vine occurring exclusively in Espírito Santo state. Its pseudanthia are similar to those of D. peckoltiana and D. pentaphylla, but D. margarethiae differs in a set of important characters, including having cylindrical, down-curved style tips, staminate flowers at anthesis having unreflexed sepals with stamens born on unelongated columns, whitish floral resin, and simple, entire, cordate leaves.

We describe a new species of dull-colored flea-toad, genus Brachycephalus, from the Atlantic Forest of Caparaó mountains in southeastern Brazil. The new species is characterized by its diminutive size, “leptodactyliform” body, brownish color with an inverted V-shaped dark mark on dorsum, skin smooth, hyperossification and dorsal shield absent, linea masculinea absent, Fingers I and IV vestigial, Toe I externally absent, Toe II reduced but functional, Toes III and IV with pointed tips, Toe V vestigial, and ventral color uniformly brown. It is a leaf litter dweller, known only from type locality in the humid forests on the eastern slopes of Parque Nacional do Caparaó mountains, a protected area in the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. It is the third flea-toad occurring in the state of Espírito Santo recovered as sister to all other Brachycephalus distributed from the state of São Paulo northward in the Atlantic Forest.

 A species of Selaginella from Parque Nacional do Caparaó, in Espírito Santo State, southeastern Brazil, is described as new to the science: Selaginella salinoi grows on rocks in Atlantic Rainforest vegetation at ca. 1200 m. The description includes photos of live plants and, scanning electron micrographs.

We provide the first record of Leptodactylus cupreus out of its type locality, as well the first record of this species in the State of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. The record of Leptodactylus cupreus from municipality Santa Teresa extends in approximately 220 km to the northeastern of its geographic distribution and establishes the inferior limit of 800 m in its altitudinal distribution in the Serra da Mantiqueira.

Based on material collected during the past 10 years in the State of Espírito Santo and adjacent areas in Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil, we identified three species of the genus Thraulodes: T. itatiajanus Traver & Edmunds, for which we present new records and description of the female imago; T. luisae Souto, Da-Silva & Nessimian, first recorded for the state and for which we describe the nymphal stage; and T. alegre sp. nov., described based on male and female imago. The main diagnostic characteristics of the new species are: color of abdominal terga I–VI whitish translucent, terga II–VI with subrectangular dark brown mark near posterior margin and with midway spot; styliger plate triangular and whitish; penes light yellow, with lateral pouch and penes spines long and tapered, with robust bases.

Adults and tadpoles of a new species of the genus Leptodactylus are described from southeastern Brazil. Leptodactylus thomei sp.nov. can be found amidst the leaf litter within cocoa plantations along the northern coastal region of the state of Espírito Santo. It can be distinguished from other species of the Leptodactylus marmoratus group by its advertisement call, which is described, together with agonistic calls, and compared to advertisement calls of other species of the group that occur in southern and southeastern Brazil. The systematics of associated populations is discussed.
