AbstractThis article outlines the history of research in global literature as a history that is itself global. This kind of global history of the theorization of global literature demands a departure from the existing accounts and their nascent gap between heated theoreticist debates and pacifying historicist anthologies. A global approach to the problematic can bridge this gap because it considers not only what the most influential studies on global literature say, but also where and when they say it. Whether these be Romantic assertions of world literature, post-war pleas for cosmopolitan literature, Cold War polemics about ‘Third World’ literature, or millennial theories of transnational, post-national, planetary, and, indeed, global literature, the article considers not only the object of these studies but also the studies themselves as an object; not only the text but also the context. Hence, a historicization of literary theories of globalization in effect bleeds into a historicization of globalization itself.

martin cohen's “developments in foreign approval buying,” in the march 2001 issue of pmla, lists some of “the foreign language bibliographer's […] tricks” (393) for stocking collections. Acquiring African literature, however, is largely a different matter. The approval plans Cohen mentions, whereby “the vendor allows you to see the book [or a description of it] before you decide whether or not to add it to the collection,” would be applicable to the presses in England and France specializing in Third World literature (e.g., Heinemann in England, L'Harmattan in France), which publish primarily the most established African writers (see Maja-Pearce; Ruppert). But when it comes to publishing on the continent of Africa, even books by well-known writers (like Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o), when written in the national languages, can only be obtained locally. And certainly all other literature has to be bought in the country of origin.

Even when its focus is ostensibly local, Gabriel García Márquez’s literary output registers the global forces—and, specifically, the imbalances of economic, political, and cultural power—that condition those local circumstances. These same forces are the dynamics that define the Global South in the present. Following the most recent work in the field, the Global South is here understood not simply as a place name or post–Cold War substitute for the Third World, but as the resistant political imaginary arising from the mutual recognition of shared or analogous circumstances by marginalized or dispossessed groups throughout the world. This article explores the three principal intersections between García Márquez’s work and the Global South understood as a relational and analytical category. First, it outlines the ways in which his work registers global—and, importantly, South-South—circuits of exchange, opening up new comparative itineraries. Second, it elaborates the ways in which these comparative connections build toward a critique of the global system, such that García Márquez provides both the grounds and a model for what this article calls “Global South thinking.” The final section addresses the circulation and influence of García Márquez’s work in the literatures of the Global South. Much of the existing commentary on this topic (his influence on Third World, postcolonial, or even world literature) has focused on magical realism and One Hundred Years of Solitude. But, the article shows, works such as The Autumn of the Patriarch and Chronicle of a Death Foretold have also had a profound influence, on both individual texts and their reception.

AbstractAlthough most all contemporary studies of China and Africa focus on current economic or foreign policy concerns, this article provides a preliminary mapping of Africa-China cultural exchanges during the Cold War. Growing out of the Africa-Asia Conference of Bandung, Indonesia, in 1955, the Afro-Asian Writers Bureau forged third world solidarities via an alternative conception of postcolonialism based on the transnationalism of global South cultural struggle. By analyzing the cultural exchanges of the bureau, and in particular their definition ofworld literature, this article seeks to move beyond postcolonial scholarship that focuses exclusively on a vertical relationship between the colonizer and colonized. In so doing, it both reinterprets the Cold War from outside of an American and Soviet dichotomy and provides a critical cultural historicization to China’s current, and often controversial, presence in Africa.
