The first Paleozoic stenopodidean from the Huntley Mountain Formation (Devonian–Carboniferous), north-central Pennsylvania

A single specimen of a shrimp-like crustacean,Devonostenopus pennsylvaniensis, new genus and species is described from the Huntley Mountain Formation, which is Devonian–Carboniferous (Mississippian) in age. The specimen was collected in north-central Pennsylvania.Devonostenopus pennsylvaniensisis attributed to Stenopodidae. Co-occurrence of the specimen with pinnules ofArchaeopteris hallianaGoeppert, 1852, suggests that it is Devonian in age. Occurrence of a stenopodidean in the Devonian of North America is significant, as only three definitive decapods have been previously described from the Paleozoic and only two have been described from the Devonian. The earliest stenopodideans described to date are Cretaceous (Cenomanian and Santonian) in age. As such,Devonostenopus pennsylvaniensisextends the geologic range of Stenopodidea from Cretaceous to Late Devonian. Occurrence of a stenopodidean in the Devonian of North America, as well as the occurrence of the only two other known Devonian decapods in North America, suggests that Laurentia might have been a major area of endemism for Devonian decapods.

A new trigonotarbid arachnid, Gigantocharinus szatmaryi new genus and species, is described from Upper Devonian (Late Famennian) sediments in Pennsylvania. Devonian trigonotarbids were known before from only a single North American locality and several European ones. The new trigonotarbid occurs in what had previously been a significant time gap between the faunas of the Middle Devonian and the late Carboniferous. Gigantocharinus szatmaryi is assigned with some hesitation to the family Palaeocharinidae.

Abstract Discovery of a single specimen of a nearly complete cephalothorax and pleon of a new arthropod from the Late Devonian (Famennian) Chagrin Shale Member of the Ohio Shale Formation in Lake County, northeastern Ohio, USA documents the oldest known representative of the Axiidea. The specimen documents a new genus and species, Devonoaxius garlandi, and extends the range of the infraorder from the Jurassic into the Late Devonian. This range extension was predicted by a recent phylogenetic analysis. The addition of this axiid brings to four the number of arthropod genera in the Chagrin Shale Member, two of which represent the oldest members of their lineage.

We describe Republica weatbrooki, a new genus and species of damselfly (Odonata, Zygoptera, Euphaeidae, Eodichromatinae) from the early Eocene (Ypresian) fossil locality at Republic, Washington, U.S.A. Its single specimen is the sole damselfly known from the Okanagan Highlands series of localities in far-western North America.

Gastropods are abundant in the Middle Ordovician (Whiterockian) Antelope Valley Formation of Nevada. Because Whiterockian rocks are absent in much of central and eastern North America, these Nevada gastropods play a significant role in understanding the Early to Middle Ordovician transition of the class. The shell and operculum of a new genus and species of macluritoid, Monitorella auricula, is described. New euomphaloid taxa include Walcottoma frydai n. gen. and sp., Rossospira harrisae n. gen. and sp., Barnesella measuresae n. sp., Helicotoma gubanovi n. sp., Lytospira yochelsoni n. sp., and Malayaspira hintzei n. sp.

Uintasoricines are diminutive plesiadapiforms that are found in the latest Paleocene through middle Eocene, predominantly in North America. They are not a diverse group but individual species may be locally abundant and they are a persistent element of the plesiadapiform radiation in North America surviving over a span of approximately 16 million years. Recent field work in southern Wyoming at South Pass has led to the discovery of a new genus and species of uintasoricine. The new form is smaller in tooth dimensions compared to other known uintasoricines, being slightly smaller thanUintasorex montezumicusfrom California. Both the newly described taxon andU. montezumicusare among the smallest plesiadapiforms yet known with body weights estimated to be 20 to 25 g. The sediments of the Cathedral Bluffs Tongue of the Wasatch Formation at South Pass contain a unique upland fauna—the presence of a distinctive uintasoricine in this assemblage adds further evidence to support the notion that this upland environment was a biodiversity hotspot during the latest early Eocene.

AbstractRhagionidae is one of the most primary families of the lower Brachycera. Many rhagionid genera and species have been found in the Mesozoic. Their fossils came from Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. In the present paper, descriptions of a new genus and species of Rhagionidae from the Middle Jurassic of China, Achrysopilus neimenguensis gen. et sp. n. and a key to genera of Chinese fossil rhagionids are given.
