Based on the anchoring effect due to the self-assembling behavior of the phospholipid molecules at the interface between the liquid crystal and water phases on the orientation of liquid crystals, the optical response associated with the orientation and structure of liquid crystals with respect to the concentration of 1,2-didodecanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine solution has been investigated. The optical response owing to changes in the orientation and structure of the mixed cholesteric liquid crystals with respect to the change in the concentration of phosphatidylcholine has been obtained. Moreover, the feasibility of using as-prepared mixed cholesteric liquid crystals to measure the phosphatidylcholine concentration has been verified. A methodology to measure the reflectance spectrum by using mixed cholesteric liquid crystals to sensitize the phosphatidylcholine concentration has been further realized. The sensitization effect of the mixed cholesteric liquid crystals on the measurement of phosphatidylcholine concentration was also verified.

Homogeneous ER fluid is an ER fluid which consists of a homogeneous fluid only; it is neither a suspension nor a blend of immiscible liquids. Various liquid crystals are typical examples of homogeneous ER fluids. Recently, we have found that urethane-modified polypropylene glycol (UPPG) is one of the very few examples of homogeneous ER fluids which show no liquid crystalline order. In order to clarify the mechanism of the ER effect in this fluid, we have studied, in this paper, electrohydrodynamic flow under shear and electric field.

The polymer stabilized liquid crystals (PSLC) films was prepared subsequently based on the mesogenic diacrylate monomer 4,4’-bis[6-(acryloyloxy)-hexyloxy]biphenyl (BAB6). The effects of BAB6 on the morphology of polymer network as well as the electro-optical properties of the PSLC films were investigated. The helical structure of liquid crystals was observed in the morphology of polymer network by SEM. Further, a single switching process was observed at lower monomer concentration in this study compared with the former publication. When BAB6 concentration reached 7 %, the response time and contrast ratio of PSLC film were 7 ms and 16.8, respectively.
