A CONTEMPORARY MANASCHI IN ORAL PERFORMANCE AND IN PRINT

This study examines the vocabulary density and the frequency of unique and repeated lines of a contemporary manaschi in oral performance and in print. Transcriptions of audiovisual recordings of Talantaaly Bakchiev (b. 1971) performing are compared with two volumes of Manas narratives that he published. The research reveals that the published versions have a higher vocabulary density than the oral performance, have a greater percentage of unique lines and less repetitions. This suggests that the medium in which the metrical narrative is presented is reflected in the language, and indications of orality are absent from written variants.

In the last decade or more, dysphagia research has investigated the effect of lingual strengthening on oropharyngeal dysphagia with promising results. Much of this research has utilized strengthening devices such as the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) or the Madison Oral Strengthening Therapeutic (MOST) Device. Patients are often given a device to use, and are able to complete an exercise protocol daily or multiple times per day. This case study was completed to determine the effectiveness of using the IOPI in an outpatient clinic where therapy was conducted two to three times per week. The patient was seen post tongue resection due to oropharyngeal cancer. From initiation of IOPI use to patient discharge, the patient demonstrated a 71% increase in lingual strength at the anterior position, a 61% increase at the posterior position, and a 314% increase at the base of tongue position. His diet advanced from NPO to general based on gains in lingual strength and bolus propulsion.

Every literary work emerges from the particular alternatives of its time. This is ostensibly reflected in the attempted innovative renderings of these alternatives in the poetry of contemporary Nigerian poets of Yoruba extraction. Discernible in the poetry of Niyi Osundare and Remi Raji is the shaping and ordering of the linguistic appurtenances of the Yoruba orature, which themselves are sublimely rooted in the proverbial, chants, anecdotes, songs and praises derived from the Yoruba oral poetry of Ijala, Orin Agbe, Ese Ifa, Rara, folklore as well as from other elements of oral performance. This engagement with the Yoruba oral tradition significantly permeates the poetics of Niyi Osundare’s Waiting laughters and Remi Raji’s A Harvest of Laughters. In these anthologies, both Osundare and Raji traverse the cliffs and valleys of the contemporary Nigerian milieu to distil the social changes rendered in the Yoruba proverbial, as well as its chants and verbal formulae, all of which mutate from momentary happiness into an enduring anomie grounded in seasonal variations in agricultural production, ruinous political turmoil, suspense and a harvest of unresolved, mysterious deaths. The article is primarily concerned with how the African oral tradition has been harnessed by Osundare and Raji to construct an avalanche of damning, peculiarly Nigerian, socio-political upheavals (which are essentially delineated by the signification of laughter/s) and display these in relation to the country’s variegated ecology.

Bibles and parts of bibles are themselves used as ritual objects in Jewish and Christian worship. Their display and manipulation, oral performance, and semantic interpretation have been ritualized by synagogues and churches since antiquity. The origins of these practices are rooted in the Bible itself. Their influence has shaped every Jewish and Christian tradition and reaches beyond them to Muslims, Manicheans, and other religious communities. This chapter and its companions in this volume on Christianity and Islam focus mostly on how the iconic dimension of scriptures gets ritualized, because the iconic dimension has received less scholarly attention than the ritualization of scripture’s oral performance, artistic illustration, and semantic interpretation.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a existência de relação entre pressão máxima da língua e a etiologia da respiração oral em crianças respiradoras orais atendidas em um Ambulatório do Respirador Oral. Método Foi conduzido um estudo transversal observacional descritivo e analítico com 59 crianças respiradoras orais com idades entre três e 12 anos (média de 6,5 anos e DP=2,4). Para a coleta da pressão de língua, foi utilizado o Iowa Oral Performance Instrument – (IOPI) e dados sobre a etiologia da respiração oral e oclusão dentária foram coletados nos prontuários desses pacientes para análise. As associações entre a pressão máxima da língua e a etiologia da respiração oral, idade, gênero e oclusão dentária foram verificadas pelo teste T, ANOVA, coeficiente de Spearman e Teste de Tuckey, utilizando-se nível de significância de 5%. Resultados Houve correlação moderada e positiva entre idade e pressão máxima, verificou-se que houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre a pressão máxima da língua e as variáveis hipertrofia da tonsila faríngea e hipertrofia das tonsilas palatinas. Não foram verificadas diferenças estatísticas entre as outras variáveis. Conclusão Conclui-se que as obstruções mecânicas, dentre elas a hipertrofia das tonsilas faríngea e palatinas alteram a pressão máxima de língua em crianças respiradoras orais.

The chapter proposes that one cannot approach Byzantine literature—preserved in either medieval and early modern manuscript books or in the form of inscriptions—without an appreciation of its textual modes of production and circulation, its possible origins in oral creation, and its likely orientation toward oral performance and auditory reception. It thus introduces and surveys three types of texts: (i) texts that reflect conditions of primary orality (songs, sayings, and short or long “stories”); (ii) texts that entail secondary orality (primarily rhetorical and liturgical texts); and (iii) a middle type of texts (texts of fictive orality and rhetoricized liturgical literature). The chapter is rounded off by an examination of Byzantine conceptions of oral vs. written discourse.

Foreign language anxiety (FLA) has a debilitating influence on the oral performance of EFL speakers. Over the past decade, most research in MALL has emphasized the use of mobile applications on improving language skills, but little research has explored the impact of using video recording tool to decrease foreign language speaking anxiety (FLSA). Hence, this study examines the effect of using video recording tool on students' EFL speaking anxiety. Twenty-eight pre-intermediate freshmen at Van Lang University, Vietnam, participated in a seven-week project. In this research, mixed method was used in combination with three data collection instruments: questionnaire, observation notes, semi-structured interview. The results indicated that video recording tool significantly lowers EFL speaking anxiety. Therefore, this study makes a major contribution to research on FLA by exploring freshmen's anxiety causes and its impacts on learners' oral performance and offering a technique to help them overcome that phobia: mobile phone video recording.
