Ensuring that all the head ropes on a multi-rope friction winder share the load equally has been a design and maintenance issue since they were first developed. Accurate machining of the rope grooves is necessary to meet this objective. Early analysis of the change of rope loads for ropes in grooves that are mismatched in depth treated the grooves as rigid. Groove depth tolerances deduced from this analysis are stringent and difficult to achieve in practice. Test work indicated that the inherent flexibility of groove lining materials alleviates the load-sharing problem. However, no analysis of rope load changes due to mismatched flexible grooves has been published. In this paper we develop new equations for the rope load variation for flexible grooves. By allowing flexibility to reduce to zero, the corresponding rigid rope groove equations are obtained. New criteria for tolerable groove depth variations are developed from this analysis, which depend on the flexibility of the groove lining material.

The progressive upgrading of heavy-duty gas turbines, aimed at increased performance, can ultimately introduce more onerous operating conditions, to the point that original design limits can be approached. An increased gas turbine pressure ratio together with compression and expansion line adjustments can directly affect the rotor axial thrust. Other than the individual forces acting on the rotor, a key component to be taken into account is the fluid film thrust bearing, which should assure safe and reliable operation during the worst case operating conditions. Typically, such bearings are designed with large safety margins, yet it is possible that the new and more challenging conditions require a bearing capability upgrade, especially when field retrofit needs pose additional constraints. A succession of performance upgrades have been carried out on Ansaldo Energia’s AE94.2 E-Class GT. An accurate understanding of the thrust-related phenomena proved necessary and drove improvements in the thrust bearing design along with hardware adjustments to lower the rotor thrust. This paper addresses calculations and experimental arrangements for the rotor axial thrust evaluation on the aforementioned GT and considers both the matters related to the secondary air system for the thrust generation and the mechanical/functional matters for the bearing upgrade. It is shown that issues such as uneven load sharing across the thrust bearing, or the variability of rotor thrust from engine to engine within the fleet, strongly affect the maximum thrust assessment and thus the requirements used in the process of selecting a suitable bearing. A predictive calculation method is described considering the main thrust contributions. Field experimental setups and main observations are reported. Measurements have been carried out using thermocouples and load cells placed on many of the thrust bearing pads. Moreover, the engine cavities carrying the highest and/or the most uncertain thrust share have been instrumented and characterized by pressure sensors. The development of an upgraded thrust bearing is finally depicted through the main issues addressed, such as improved thrust pad lining material, increased load sharing efficiency and enlarged thrust bearing active surface area. Waukesha Bearings test results on the upgraded lining material, a high-tin aluminium alloy are reported as well. A multidisciplinary approach is presented as necessary to manage the crucial challenge of improving the thrust balancing system, especially in the case of a formerly designed engine which receives a powerful upgrade.

Abstract. Planning interactions with the physical world requires knowledge about operations; in short, mental operators. Abstractness of content and directionality of access are two important properties to characterize the representational units of this kind of knowledge. Combining these properties allows four classes of knowledge units to be distinguished that can be found in the literature: (a) rules, (b) mental models or schemata, (c) instances, and (d) episodes or chunks. The influence of practicing alphabet-arithmetic operators in a prognostic, diagnostic, or retrognostic way (A + 2 = ?, A? = C, or ? + 2 = C, respectively) on the use of that knowledge in a subsequent test was used to assess the importance of these dimensions. At the beginning, the retrognostic use of knowledge was worse than the prognostic use, although identical operations were involved (A + 2 = ? vs. ? - 2 = A). This disadvantage was reduced with increased practice. Test performance was best if the task and the letter pairs were the same as in the acquisition phase. Overall, the findings support theories proposing multiple representational units of mental operators. The disadvantage for the retrognosis task was recovered in the test phase, and may be evidence for the importance of the order of events independent of the order of experience.

Abstract Tread wear rates during first wear measured by groove depth and weight changes do not always agree. Sometimes, the groove depth method shows a high rate and the weight loss method a low rate. Reported here are experiments designed to determine if grooves show depth changes without wear. Four tires were measured before mounting on a wheel, after mounting and inflation, and after inflation and storage. The mounted and inflated tires showed shallower shoulder grooves and deeper center grooves than the unmounted tires. In a second experiment, tires were measured immediately after a tread wear test and then stored mounted for two weeks before remeasuring. Each groove became deeper, and there was no change in the crown radius of any tire.

Abstract Tread wear data are frequently fitted by a straight line having average groove depth as the ordinate and mileage as the abscissa. The authors have observed that the data points are not randomly scattered about the line but exist in runs of six or seven points above the line followed by the same number below the line. Attempts to correlate these cyclic deviations with climatic data failed. Harmonic content analysis of the data for each individual groove showed strong periodic behavior. Groove 1, a shoulder groove, had two important frequencies at 40 960 and 20 480 km (25 600 and 12 800 miles); Grooves 2 and 3, the inside grooves, had important frequencies at 10 240, 13 760, and 20 480 km (6400, 8600, and 12 800 miles), with Groove 4 being similar. A hypothesis is offered as a possible explanation for the phenomenon.
